Title: TRADGANG FUN SHOOT ROUND TWO...
Post by: Looper on June 04, 2011, 06:38:00 PM
All right lads and lasses, gird your loins and cinch your girdles, this next round will test your fortitude and your pluck (that's a pun).

The target will be a standard sized paper plate or tortilla, or cantaloupe, or whatever you have.  You'll need to draw 3 circles:

The 10 ring will be quarter-sized.
The 8 ring will be 3", or the inside of a roll of duct tape.
The 6 ring will be 5-1/4", or the raised ridge on the paper plate.
The 4 ring will be 9", or the rest of the paper plate.

If you cut a line, you get the higher score.

The distance will be 10 yards, or 30 feet, or 9.144 meters.

You will be be making 4 shots, taking around a minute between each shot. No slinging arrow after arrow.  You can use one arrow, or four, but you must "reset" yourself after each shot.

Now for the stance and body position.  Take a mental trip with me for a second.

You're in the Cohutta Wilderness. You're quarry is formidable.  His 6" tusks are as sharp as if sharpened on a whet stone.  His black hide is caked with mud; his massive, scarred shoulders and sides are the mark of his dominance and his willingness to challenge all foes. His ears are torn, as is his tail.  He's not afraid of challengers or of the dogs he's tangled with.  He is 300 pounds of pure evil. He is Sus Scrofa.  He is wild boar. He is your foe.

The alders are thick, obscuring your view for more than a few yards.  It's misting, so your steps are muffled, but you're still having to go painfully slow. The slight breeze is in your face.  Hog sign is everywhere. The soft wet soil is overturned all around you.  You just passed two huge oaks with muddy rub marks 3 feet high.  You take a step and remain motionless.  You sense something close.  You slowly raise your binoculars and scan the brush ahead.

Suddenly, a surge of adrenaline shoots through your body.  Your scalp tightens, your pulse quickens, and your breathing stops.  Did you just hear something? What was it? Your imagination? No! There it is again! A shuffling of leaves. It's coming from that large stump 30 feet in front of you.  You get a whiff of a strange odor.  It's a stink, a foulness, like a filthy, wet, mongrel dog.

You focus all of your energy in the direction of that stump.  The alders are thick. You crouch down to get a better view. You spot movement! What is that?

Suddenly, your mind wraps around what you are seeing.  There, a mere 10 yards from you is your quarry.  He's laying on his side at the base of that large stump.  His belly is towards you and he is unaware of your presence.  You have a clear view of the balding patch between his front legs.

You have to make this shot count.  The alder is too thick, but you won't find a better shot. You can't kneel. Your feet are in amongst a snarl of roots and vines.  You'll have to shoot crouched. With the undergrowth, you'll have to hold your bow almost parallel with the ground.  Quick, make the shot! He's stirring!

It won't be easy and may the heavens help you if you miss.

To recap:

10 yards
4 shots (take 1 minute between shots)
shoot crouching with your bow canted to almost parallel with the ground, like you're shooting under a table.

If you miss completely, throw your bow to the ground, squeal like a little girl, and sprint to the nearest tree.  Don't climb it, though.  You don't want to look silly.

Good luck.

this is the only position i can shoot from and stay crouched just under the window out of her view   :bigsmyl:

advantage me!

anyway, sounds like fun, i will get to it sometime next week.

You worry a bit about your form as you draw your bow, this is not a position you've practiced much - right now you wish you had.  You can see the flight of the arrow in your mind, traveling from your shiny new bow through the alder and right to its mark.  You consciously hold that image in your mind as you reach full draw.  You are totally focused on your spot, but for the briefest of moments the reality of the moment, the size of the beast, the awkwardness of the shooting position flash through your thoughts.  A slight shiver betrays your body just as you release the string.  The bow was silent as it launched your arrow, and your quarry is still unaware of the your presence or of the arrow now hurdling towards him at nearly 200 feet per second.  But the arrow's flight is off the smallest fraction of an inch by the time the arrow leaves your bow.  It seems like an eternity for that arrow to close those 30 feet.  The beast is still laying there when the arrow arrives.  it is clear to you that the small fraction of an inch error at release has now grown to several inches.

The shot is high and glances off his shoulder and disappears into the alder in the background.  Your foe is now on full alert looking for his attacker.  The slight sound of an arrow tapping the side of your bow as you remove the next arrow from your quiver surrenders your position, and this 300 pounds of enraged primordial fury begins his charge.  He moves amazing quickly through the alder, quicker than you ever imagined, and he is upon you before you can find the string with your nock.  You are knocked back hard by his impact, landing flat on the ground.  You reach for the knife hanging from your belt in a desperate attempt to fight back, but it is too late.  The razor sharp 6" tusks are now mere inches from your throat.  Your realize that this is going to end poorly.

You are suddenly aroused from your sleep by the blaring of your alarm clock.  You rise quietly for the hunt, trying not to wake the whole house - but unable to shake the vividness of that dream. You think to yourself as you lace up your boots.....maybe I should practice a few unconventional shooting positions during warm-ups today.

Sorry to hijack the wonderful intro story - but I just had to finish it with my thoughts as I came back from shooting my four arrows.  The story was still in my mind, and I shot pretty poorly.  It just made me think how much I need to improve......and what might have happened.

I wanted to be the first to post results, since it is likely the only way I will lead one of these fun shoots......even if for only a short period of time.

Sounds like fun, sorry I missed the last one.  I only had a small saucer paper plate.

I don't normally shoot that close or with that severe of a can't.  I'm very pleased, challenging shot.

looks like 8,8,6,6 for a 28...

I figured a belly-crawl and staying super-low.  I shot from my knees in a low crouch with bow hand about 20" off ground.  After the first 4 (score 16), I experimented and found I needed to aim high and left to hit the mark from that range and position.    (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3029/5800980382_fa786573c3_z.jpg)
Great scenario!  Thanks looper!

As I came in to post these I figured out that I messed up...lol

These were shot from my HH Wseley Soecial 66" 46@28
but they were shot at 12 yards, not 10!

If it's ok, I'd like to have a do over at the proper yardage and I would wait until later in the week to shoot it so it would be cold turkey just like today's.

I have had just the target set-up for a couple of years now on my wonderful neighbors property.
Bedded boar. I had to put him back together and reposition him since their boys have evidently been mess'n with him and he was full of ants! I wanted to position him for a clear broadside shot but there were too many ants so I went for quartering away.

The shot at 10ish yards.

My final score doesn't count since I got a zero on the first four shots! Splitting a sapling in the process.

So I shot again just for giggles and did a little better.

The second and third shots were killing shots but a poor score. Fun though!!!

I added an obstacle to help with the realism.  My view from 10 yds.

And here is the result.

Haven't shot much in the last couple of days and it felt like it.  First shot was my best as it often is.

I'm calling it 2 8s and 2 6s for a 28.  The top shot is centered above the line.

I will be adding these off positions to my practice sessions.  Should make things more interesting and keep it fun.  Good times.

im all over this. i work tomorrow , but i used to have a course at the inlaws. there was one shot that i would kneel coming up the creek , and shoot the crest of the ground , to a shot 20yds away that was a stick that had a quarter sized dot on it.

the other shot i actually crouched down and shot through/under a rose vine.

cant wait. might even do a bit of video to authenticate...

Nice lead-in, Looper, especially with me getting ready to go to Hog Heaven in a couple of weeks.  So, in the spirit of the lead-in, I put the target low on the ground and a little obstacle.

A 26, do you think that'll make some chops in Hog Heaven?

Finally, I like the posts with what people are shooting, so here's what I shot; a Holm-Made Osprey 58#@28 (draw almost 30") w/AD HH Heavyweight with 250gn point.

Bartcanoe, yep, that should work. Now, can you do that at 20 yds, with your heart in your throat, and mosquitoes buzzing up your nose?

You'll have a blast.  I haven't been to Ray's, but some of my favorite hog spots are within about an hour of him.  You probably won't have many, if any shots where you need to hold your bow canted that far. If you want to have shots like that, you'll need to come to the upstate area and hunt these mountain hogs with me.

Got a 10,6 & 2 4s for a score of 24.
She tried last weeks a few days late and got a 32 with 2 10s, an 8 & a 4 for a score of 32. I only got a 30 but hers don't count.

If two shooters are tied for first place maybe they can have a shoot off and shoot the same target again just an idea its snakebit thing and i dont want to hijack his idea but its just a thought.

or maybe closest arrow to center just to save time.

Like you say Aunty, not my show.

I like the ideas. I was thinking the same thing the only reason I did it like I did last week is because Rusty offered to give it to looper.

I like both the ideas, and I think a shoot off would be really cool. But you run into somebody having time to shoot another arrow or two.

If its ok with everybody I think we'll try the person with the arrow/arrows closets to the 10 ring.

Is that ok with you guys?

26 for me. Looking forward to next week.

I'll let you guys figure out what this adds up to.

The little tear on at the 3:30 position is a shot, but again I'll let you guys decide.

The 10 O'clock hole does break the line, the 4 O'clock hole I don't think it breaks the line, so I am coming up with 22. I'll leave it up to whoever is checking this.

Oh, I almost forgot, I ran out of paper plates so I had to tape the holes from the first week.

Thanks

Hope you guys don't mind if I throw my score out there. Shot 3 in the 4 ring and one in the 8 ring for a score of 20. Can't seem to track down the camera so you'll just have to take my word.

Fun competition, can't wait to see what the next shot will be...

Regarding ties, maybe the tightest group could pick the shot, and the other could pick the distance.

28 points.

I forgot my 6 ring, but didn't get that close to it.

I practice this type shoot off and on, but not crouched so low I can shoot under a table.  That is low.  I shot 3 under.  I always find I shoot better that way for close range odd angle shots even if the tune is not perfect; the closer the eye is to the arrow nock the easier it is for me to make this type shot.

But if you run into more than 2 people sharing the top spot I would have to figure something else out. Probably try the closest to the 10 ring for now. Thanks looper!

Yes, the winner gets to choose the distance, stance, if you get warm up shots, ect.

My bow did not show in today's mail. I should be getting a refund from the US Post Office once it arrives since it did have a guaranteed delivery date..lol

I'll let you know how that works out for me...lol

If it doesn't arrive tomorrow, I'll go ahead with a different bow.

Shooting 10 yds squatting isn't a problem.
It was the darn horizontal bow that got me.

My old favorite finally made it back home today!! Wahoo!

Howard Hill Cheetah 66" 56@28 aka "Keeper Kat"

I haven't shot "Keeper Kat" in quite a few months but I have been waiting for her arrival for these 4 arrows.

Here she is and then my target set up with the results.

edit:

I thought it over and I have a hunch that the canted horizontally bow wasn't such a problem for me because i'm shooting a horse bow without a rest, and shooting off the knuckle from there isn't such a great difference. just a thought

We ran out of tortillas, so I had to run out and get some real paper plates.

I think I drew the circles much better this time.

Unless. . . does low score win this tournament? Like golf, right?
