Title: man chipmunks are hard to shoot
Post by: sawtoothscream on June 03, 2011, 10:06:00 PM
friends land has a chipmunk problem. there everywhere and causes much damage. so wanting to help i go up there and shoot a few off the land every so often.  so today i got in my new small game heads from 3 river and wanted to tes them. after missing 3 from them ducking (thats my story and im sticking to it) i finally connected. thought i missed it since i saw it start dropping and then it was gone. no where near the arrow. then my brother goes there it is, about 5 or 6 ft away from the hit.  went on to miss another then called it a day.  pretty fun and tuff. but my first trad kill with my 66" hybrid is done now. for the size its really not that bad for going through brush.   cant wait for squirrel and rabbit to open!!!!

If is fun isn't it?! I've got the same problem here. Got a few last year. Complete pass thru with my RFA Talon. Lol. good shooting they are hard to hit but when you connect at 15 and 20 yards it's pretty cool. I only shoot the ones that tear up my yard. In the woods they're safe.

I think I am 1 for about 100.  Now the little buggers run and hide as soon as they hear my basement door open.  They done been educated one too many times.

ya. i only shoot the ones in his yard and the woods line. behind his house. no matter how many i shoot more pop up it seems. usually i use my pellet rifle and drop a bunch when i go out but man this was alot more fun. the head did a great job and made one mean hole. plus they dont bunch or dig into the ground.    just need to buy some cheaper arrows for i since the cx heritage arrows are a little to much to use on them.  shot the one i got at about 12 yds

Sawtooth, no matter what, field pt. blunt, or b.h. they are a challenge!

One of the best, to shoot at for honing the shot!

Nothing better!

Blueslfb. Your ratio is better than mine!  I agree with Frank it's a great way to hone your skills. Hard to pick a spot though on such a little critter.

Little targets - lousy shot. Them rodents are safe from me. They'd be great practice however.

If man chipmunks are hard to hit, are lady chipmunks easier?  :p  At least they would have bigger hips?  :dunno:

If chipmunks are tough, where does that put field mice in high sagebrush. Used to be an mid day 'hunt' while in elk country. A few of them made the ultimate sacrifice......

They are so fast, I sometimes wonder if a .22 will get them where they were when you wanted to shoot?

I've had a few shots myself, but from 8-10 yards if they have you in field of vision, they are faster than my arrow reaching them.  The only good shots I've had on them are quartering away or a broadside where they aren't focused on your area.

They have great reaction time if they see what your up to!

My average on chipmunks is also probly about 1 me 99 Alvin. However I have a much worse average on prairie dogs. Of course they are huger, but I swear they are much quicker.

Chipmunks are tuff critters...I tracked one I hit behind the shoulder and had a complete passthrough...Bloodtrail went about  2 miles in the thickest nastiest stuff one can imagine...I found several spots where he laid with about 2 pints of blood at each spot....I even got my tracking cat named Nappycat who can find just about any critter and she couldn't even find him...I'm done hunting Chipmunks...They taste to much like mice anyway! Ozzy what kind of missle launcher is that? Man you can kill em and gut them in one easy step...You better patent that thing    :goldtooth:

I'm up to 19 chipmunks so far for the season. I bet I've missed over 100. Lots of fun when the groundhogs aren't co-operating.

Depends on their size? Just don't shoot the little ones...They must have at least 42 spots...Hardest thing I found is picking a spot...

I nailed two yesterday.  Only about 5 and 8 yd. shots.  Today I had a runner at about 10 yd. and shot right under him between his legs.  Flung him right up in the air, but didn't slow him down much.  They are digging everything up around my house and in all the flower beds.  Time to break out the pellet gun I think.  Hate to do that because they are so challenging to get with the bow, but they need to be cleared out before everything is full of holes.

i love hunting with my pellet guns as well.  have a benjamin discovery on the way and a new longbow that almost ready to be made. they will have to take turns.  i need to find some places for  ground hog hunting. only place a see them is my gun club and idk if they would allow me to shoot them.  hard to to fling the arrow or pull the trigger when they are running on the target range

Those things are so fast you have to shoot where they are going to be NOT where they're at!

legal in NY with no limit, just like red squirrel. even if they werent its pest control. have to see the guys yard, garden ect... holes all over the place. some even got into his house. plus both of his dogs have been bitten by chippers. cant see why they would be protected. i blast probably hundreds every summer staying less then 70 yds of his house and it doesnt look like i even made a dent in there population. wonder if they taste good?  or if there safe to eat?

In Michigan specific types of non-protected mammals include the: Arctic shrew,
masked shrew, smoky shrew, pygmy shrew, water shrew, short-tailed shrew, eastern mole, star-nosed mole, eastern chipmunk, least chipmunk, white-footed mouse, deer mouse, meadow jumping mouse, woodland jumping mouse, house mouse, southern red-backed vole, meadow vole, woodland vole, southern bog lemming, Norway rat, and porcupine."  There are some protected shrews, but I don't know the difference between them when I find them in the mouse traps in the shop.

Many things in our state are legal to shoot if they are causing or about to cause damage.  Anything that makes a mess out of my place and chews into my barn, garage, shed, and digs up the place even pulling all the gravel out from under my driveway...... is going to get it.  I don't go out in the woods and hunt them or anything, but if they are within 50 yd. of a building they are fair game.  There is also one less unnamed winged critter around my place after it made a mess of every window in the house and crapped all over my deck and grill because it was obsessed with my sliding glass door.  I put up with that for two very long weeks.  Then one day he was gone. I don't know if he was protected or not, but I didn't do anything so it doesn't matter.   :dunno:

Here is more info on the cute little devils.

Damage and Damage Identification

Throughout their North American range, chipmunks are considered minor agricultural pests. Most conflicts with chipmunks are nuisance problems. When chipmunks are present in large numbers they can cause structural damage by burrowing under patios, stairs, retention walls, or foundations. They may also consume flower bulbs, seeds, or seedlings, as well as bird seed, grass seed, and pet food that is not stored in rodent-proof storage containers. In New England, chipmunks and tree squirrels cause considerable damage to maple sugar tubing systems by gnawing the tubes.

Legal Status

Chipmunks are not protected by federal law, but state and local regulations may apply. Most states allow landowners or tenants to take chipmunks when they are causing or about to cause damage. Some states, (for example, Georgia, North Carolina, and Arkansas) require a permit to kill nongame animals. Other states are currently developing laws to protect all nongame species. Consult your local conservation agency or USDA-APHIS-ADC personnel for the legal status of chipmunks in your state.

We have a bumper crop this year at our archery club but there is no hunting on the range. The redtails around are probably having a field day though.

I've got a trophy broken arrow on my wall that has written on it " I'm alright"

Had one tormenting me from a couple logs that I knew would bust my arrow so I was reluctant to shoot but the dang thing kept barkin at me and I gave in . . . it ducked and popped back up in front of a large rock looking just like the caddy shack goffer as if to say I'm alright try again , I just had to laugh and that arrow is my trophy for the encounter
