just wondering if anyone uses a summit tree stand for a longbow? I am looking at the goliath and was worried about the bar that surrounds you in the stand not sure if I can shoot a 62" longbow with that bar arround me or not let me know if you use the summit stand and what you do about the bar thanks Rob
I use a summit viper climber. The bar sucks. I've hit it twice with my 60" recurve while shooting at deer. Both deer were within 10 yards (too close of a shot with a climber). Both deer ran off wounded. . My climber is going to hang on my garage wall this coming season. Either hunting on the ground or in a lock-on or ladder type stand.
Used to use a Viper, but when I converted to Trad I sold it and bought a Summit Open Shot. I really like the Open Shot, but it's platform is smaller than the Viper.
What I should've done was buy the Open Shot top piece only, and kept the entire Viper. You can do this directly through Summit.
That way I would've had a larger platform on the Open Shot, and then also the total Viper in case I desired to have it for gun season.
I have the Summit Bushmaster, realtree series. Smoked several deer in it (it doesnt have a bar) It is is very very light perfect for in and out hunting. although i must say my buddy has a summit with a bar (viper i think) and has no issues with the bar.
I use the summit bushmaster,no bar to have to think about.Love it because it is only about 16 lbs
They make the Open Shot for bow hunters
i have a bushmaster x5 or something like that. great stand no complaints after 5 years or heavy use.
I too bought the viper and gave it to my son (hunts with wheels) because of the issues with the bar. I just got a open shot and have been doing some practicing with it. So far I think its going to work out fine, the smaller platform is not that big of a deal because the seat folds up and at 15 pounds you can walk a lot easier.
Love my Summit open shot. :campfire:
Two words...Open shot.
Personally I've never had a problem with my summit viper with my 64"longbow to my 60"recurves. I've killed many deer in it with my trad bows with zero problems. I like to keep the upper part higher. Seems that way I don't have any clearance issues. I love my viper!
I have a Viper, but just bought the open shot top direct from Summit for my recurve. The Viper bottom is about 3-4" longer, which I like. Varmint is right though, if you keep the top and bottom close and adjust the seat you shouldn't have too many problems with the Viper bar.
I think the Bushmaster is just a cheaper Cabelas only version of the OpenShot.
One other good thing about the newer OpenShots is the seat bar folds up. I like to stand a good bit up against the tree, and this helps.
LimBender reminded me of the comfort that the Open Shot seat provides when folded up and standing. It has a thick seat pad and when folded up it provides a nice back rest to lean on when standing.
I have a Python which I removed the front rail to make it a hand climber instead of a sit and climb. If I have an all day sit planned, I hope and pray it is somewhere I can use my Summit. They are comfy!
Open Shot. Wear harness!!!!
Open Shot. Wear harness!!!!
Buy the Open Shot or Bushmaster. No bar to worry about.
Got my 1st Trad Kill (and only lifetime harvest) from a Summit Golliath using a 64" Bear Montana Longbow .....that is one comfortable and roomy Tree Stand ..........

Ive got 2 of the Summit bushmaster. They were made before the Open shot was even available. I'm thinking of getting the open shot seat section to go with the bushmaster bottom cause I like the seat better on the open shot but would still have a bigger platform.
I have a summit viper, and have taken to lowering the top part and just standing. With the bar low I have no issues with my trad equipment. I have a bow holder on the top bar and it puts the bow handle just about hip height where my hands are hanging. I could shoot sitting with my old compound, but since I would have to stand to shoot with the longbow, I avoid spooking the deer by just staying standing.
I have used both a Summit Viper and an API Grand Slam, both with bars, and never really had any problems.
The bar makes it so much easier for climbing than hanging like a monkey on a stand without the bar. I set the stand up with the top and bottom as close as I can get them and still sit comfortably. Then when I stand, the bar is down pretty low and does not cause anymore problems than the tree itself does.
The last two years I have gone to Ol man Multi-Vision stands.
You climb sitting in the mesh seat and then step over it to get ready to hunt. The bar, down low makes a very comfortable foot rest and is out of the way for shooting.

I must've had it backwards. I can never remember if I have the top higher or lower when I'm explaining it for some reason. You'd think I'd remember after 7yrs of using the thing.
I know I have the top part just high enough so my knees don't hit the bottom of the railing. :) I never have had any problems from less than 10yds to much more.
Bushmaster open shot. Buy some Molle straps military straps off the big auction site (this site will not let me say ****) and there is NO strain on you. Daylight and dark.

I have the Old Old man, composite bottom and regular tube type top, It is very good for shooting forward, but if you have a side shot the bar will still interfere somewhat. I also have the Equalizer climber, very good stand and the leveling system works great.
