Thinking of ordering a widow pchx - anybody have some wood ideas? Right now I'm thinking of osage without phenolic in the limb wedges - whadda you guys think?
Here is what I think (sincs I am a widow person)
Order it, whatever.... LOL
That sounds good but I would talk to the guys about performance with or with out the phenolic.. Could be interesting.
Someone posted a PCH X with osage limbs and it was drop dead fine... I can not remember what the complementary wood was... ???? I am gettin old....
I have a Ideas, Order what you like, thats what makes a custom Bow. What I like, You might not. Its all ways good to see someone ideas. Thats what makes it deferent. Good luck and let us see it when you get it. Warren
Osage, black glass only.
I like the Olive Ash limbs with a darker brown wood for the riser like Zercote , Bacote , or Iron wood . My PSAX has Olive Ash limbs with Iron wood riser . Its very nice looking and bullet proof with the Iron wood riser .
I have osage limbs with a cocobolo riser. It makes a really nice contrast.
My bows have phenolic in most of them. It adds a little weight, and I like the contrasting look with light colored wood.
I like most of em, but bought a woodland camo PSA.
I have a PAX and a PCHX. The PAX is Cocobolo in the riser and limb veneers. Very nice.
The PCHX has Mrytle limb veneers -- even nicer! You might check out Idahocurt for limb veneers. I have two bows; Schafer and Widow for which the veneers were purchased from Curt by the bowyer.
I have a all tiger myrtle pchx with no phenolic and no red, I really like the looks of it, but you might not.
I also saw one with bocote dark and osage it was a looker!!!
It is hard to beat a widow
NO RED!
does not having the phenolic affect performance? I know my old mav is a shooter - never had one with phenolic to compare though.
Doesn't affect performance. The reason they added it is for moisture resistance around the pin holes. I like the bow without it as it is lighter. I second the no red also.
I think that osage limbs would be well complimented with cocobolo, kingwood, or rosewood. For the sythetic materials I think that Black Widow's use of phenolics and colored glass is what gives them their signature look, I would just leave it to them to best coordinate that feature.
if i ever buy a new widow it will be a sa with bubinga riser and osage limbs. beautiful bow. i have seen a couple of guys with that combo and it is stunning to say the least.
consider changing the stripes in the riser too.
found a pic, can't remember who it belongs to though.

I ordered another PCHX today. I hope it looks as good in real life as it does in my mind. I read threads here and look through many pictures of Widows and went with a leopard wood riser and olive ash limbs.
7 to 9 weeks from now, I'll know if I made the right choices.
You know bows in general and especially woods are really a personal choice. What I like you might not, just look at as many combo's as possible and try one. There is no law that says you cannot have a different one made later. I just ordered my second one, will be all Black and White Ebony, no Phenolic in the limb pads and no red. I think this will be stunning, but you might not like it... :bigsmyl: RW
Couldn't decide on a wood combo so I went with a "classic" widow - ordered up a PCH graybark but with all black glass and diamondback skins - 56" 52#@28 - should be sweet.
