Title: GT Nocks breaking. . .
Post by: Yeoman Bowman on May 29, 2011, 12:03:00 PM
Has anyone had trouble with GT nocks breaking?

I shot my Martin Savannah yesterday. It's 40# & so I shoot lightweight 1535 GT trads. (29.5" BOP, with 125 gr tips). They fly very well.

I was stump shooting & within an hour broke 5 nocks on 5 arrows.    :(

They seem to break on ground contact, not on release from the string. I think the arrow hits something solid, & the vibration snaps the nock inside the arrow. Every one broke off inside the arrow shaft. They are not glued in, so I think I can hook & pull them out & replace them with better nocks.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on a better arrow & nock setup for a 40# bow?

Thanks,

Yeoman

I had that happen to me also with some 35/55.I had about 4 break that was from the same package.I replaced all of them and have not had it happen any more.Maybe nocks were old or a bad batch.

Also I used a small wood screw and some pliers to get the broken piece out.

The wood screw is a good idea. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks.

Did you replace them with GT nocks or some other brand?

The only nocks I've had problems with were the ones that fit heritage 90s., except they were breaking on release. Figured they were too small for someone who sands their nocks the fit the serving. They would start breaking after a few hundred shots, or so. Quit shooting 90s...problem solved.

I've had similar issues with GT nocks. Switched to Bohning Signature and haven't had any problems. Solid fit and durable.

I had that happen also but on firing the bow.I wasn't too happy about it either. The same as dry firing the bow.

I got rid of every GT nock and replaced them with Signature nocks from 3Rivers.Problem solved.

The Gold Tip arrows are good but I can't afford to lose a good bow due to cheap nocks.

Yeoman, the nocks have GT on the side of them, but can't remember if there Gold Tip nocks or Bohning. The nocks that were breaking were the same ones which leads me to thinking they were just a bad batch or something.I have never had any of the old style GT nocks (set screw) break but I never liked the looks of them.

Only had one break on me so far.  On getting them out, someone on hear suggested just unscrewing the point and using it to remove the broken nock.  Worked great for me, and handy too.

I've had the clear colored nock break on me but rarely have any of the solid white one break.

I usually take a sheet rock screw & pull the broken piece out with that.

I have shot them since they came out and never had one break from just normal use. I have had them break after hitting them with another arrow. LCH

I got a pack of ugly pale yellow GT nocks once, and I broke several of them, seemed like they were brittle.  Never had problems with any others though.  I footed some GT 3555's a few weeks ago and have been stumpin' with them quite a bit, no problems (white nocks).  Yeoman, I think me and you must have got a bad batch of nocks.

I shoot GT trad 1535s and on target/3D shoots have not had any problems with nocks breaking through regular use.  However if I hit something hard that the arrow won't stick in, the nock will break exactly as you've describe - about 0.5 inch of nock left inside the shaft.

I usually just unscrew a point, thread into the broken nock, and pull out the broken piece.

The solid color nocks are not as brittle as the see through or clear nocks.Usually if ya stick with the solid color nocks ya wont have trouble with them snappin, less your good enough to hit em with the other arrows.

White ones never break...got two dozen ruby colored knocks and i'v busted at least 4 already.  Seem like the colored ones are the problem.  Any one else have similar experience?

Wow! I've shot GT Trad shafts from the time they hit the market and have never had a nock to break! I have had them blow out when I hit something solid dead on, but hey, thats my fault.

Same here.  Solid color ok, but the translucent ones are easy to break. I had too many brake on me including one that went on release and cracked a riser on a bow.  I pull all of them now and put in the Beman solid color nocks.  You can bend those all around to adjust for string, and I have never broken one except on a robin hood and even then they have stayed on one piece even though I split them end to end through one side.

I have to say that in 3 years that I have only had two people ask me about the nocks so I havent't heard of any problems with any of them other than that.
I typically shoot white nocks but have ocasionally shot the translucent orange and green without any problems. Yes, I have broken a few, but only after hitting very hard objects. Infact, I would have normally expected some of those hits to produce broken arrows.
Now I can only account for 10 + doz. arrows over the last couple of years (I don't like looking for lost arrows), but I also exclusively shoot bows in the 80lb + range. The nocks are the same for all size shafts too.
This is not to say that there hasn't been an issue, I have only had a couple of customers contact me about broke nocks and I sold nearly 3000 doz arrows last year.
thanks, bigjim

I've had similar issues with GT nocks. I had it happen once on release - only once.  That was it for me and I switched to using either Bohning Signature or Easton.  I haven't had a problem since.

On getting them out, I waited until I got back to the man cave, and I used an old deck screw.  Just thread it right in to the broken end and pull it out.

Thanks for the replies.

Seems that some of you have also had trouble, particularly with the translucent nocks.

Can anyone post a link to a specific nock that don't break? 3 Rivers carries tons of nocks & I want to make sure it fits the diameter of the GT Trads.   :dunno:

Thanks again.

I had that same problem and I had to replace all of mine. They were the ones that looks clear or glassy, green and had GT on them. They'd break during a shot or if I hit something hard. I got some of those Easton Supernocks and that cured that problem.
