Title: pain in the wrist
Post by: BearAddict72 on May 28, 2011, 11:55:00 AM
been getting alot of pain in my draw wrist as of late. More so right behind my thumb and first finger. Ibuprophen used to help but hasnt lately. Took a few days off from shooting and it stopped hurting. Did a little shooting yesterday and it hurts again today. Thinking i might have it checked tuesday and see whats what. Has this happen to any of you guys?

Try a deeper hook on the string with your fingers. There's a thread in the shooters forum  going on about this.

Was there any event where you whacked it or did it just start hurting all of a sudden?

I tried accupuncture for several different aches and pains through-out the years and have had positive outcomes on all.Nothing ventured nothing gained my Dad says.

Hold your hand out in front of you like you're going to shake hands.  Now, grasp your thumb inside your fingers (like a fist).  Don't move your forearm, but bend your wrist toward the floor from that position.  Does that provoke pain?  (If this is confusing, youtube Finklestein's test).

Now, grasp the base of  your thumb with the uninvolved hand.  Push your thumb straight back toward your wrist and grind that joint around.  Does that provoke pain? (youtube Grind test thumb).

If you pinch your webspace, does that hurt?

Lastly, what do you do for a living?  Does it hurt at work at all?

pm me if talking with me would be more helpful.

i think it may be from all the fishing i have done lately. It think its from snapping the rod on my release. Its the tendon right behind my thumb that hurts the most.

Don't hesitate.  Get it looked at before it gets worse.

Without answers to any of my questions, I would say it is DeQuervain's tenosynovitis.  Anti-inflammatories, ice, rest, and get a referral from your PCP to see an Occupational Therapist (outpatient OT's like myself specialize in hand therapy).
Any questions, just let me know.  Good luck.

bronz, when i rotate my wrist i get alot of popping and grinding noises. When i put my thumb in the thumbs up position and rotate my hand forward like pointing with my thumb is when it hurts the most.

Sounds like DeQuervain's.  I would follow the advice from my last post and get'r taken care of.  Again, feel free to pm me and we can talk in more depth.  Have a great one!

What Bronz says. I got De Quervain's in my bow hand wrist. De Quervain's is tendonitis (swelling) of the tendon that runs through your wrist to the base of your thumb. As it got worse, I saw the doc. He gave me a shot of cortisone and a splint to wear at night. It's 100% now.  Very easy to treat.
