I shoot a 50# longbow.this will be my first season deer hunting with it.iv got some arrows almost ready thanks to Bobby Urban on here(makes real nice arrows).just not sure with what style and weight broadheads to go with.iv always really like the old style design of the Howard Hill points.but would they be to heavy for my arrow?and also wondering what you guys that have used them thought of how they did on deer.thanks for any help,Ross

GWC... While the Hill broadhead certain has a long and successful track record, I think there are better choices out there.
I never found the Hill head to make a very good blood trail and they can be challenging to sharpen.
Having said that, there are a ton of really fine broadheads to choose from out there.
The Woodsman sold by 3Rivers has proven itself to be deep penetrating, flies perfectly, is tough, leaves a good blood trail and is easy to sharpen.
You'll get many more opinions.
Zwickey Eskimo comes in 125 gr in either 2 or 4 point. I am partial to bleeders but can't say anything against the Grizzlies either.
I'd say find out what wt you need for your arrows to spine out right.
Of course you can adjust the flight by shortening the arrow a bit.
Anyway, see what wt you need first since you have arrows being made already.
The needed wt may narrow down the choices needed.
End the end find one that flies well and you can get sharp...it'll make meat if you do your part.
I'm a big fan of the Wensel Woodsman Elite heads. I have had really good flight out of them, even at compound speeds. I especially like the heavier, solid models. They are very quiet in flight, although the jury is out on whether that matters.

I am shooting 160 Snuffers right now that I got in trade from the late Chris Surtees and will continue to hunt with them till they need to be retired.
You have been given great advice in using a Wensel Woodsman. Great head ! Easy to sharpen razor sharp with a file and leather strop, leaves a awesome blood trail, and penetrates like no other 3 blade head due to the 3:1 ratio. If you can, buy the Elites since they are 1 piece perfection. The brazed regular heads are fine but do require more metal to be removed on intial sharpening due to a little warpage during brazing. JMHO
ACE Standard, and STOS are my go to BH's
I really like the Zephyr heads, Sasquatch especially for a big bad head...

Zwickey single bevel. Tough BH. Not the easiest things to sharpen. Stuck one in a concrete block and after very little file work it back in my quiver.
I don't think you can ever go wrong with any of the Ace Archery line of broadheads. They are a great value and come in lots of weights.

So many great choices available which is evident by the numerous different favorites.
1. Select a well known performer from a moderate to light weight draw wt.
2. Would suggest targetting 10 gpp
3. #1 - Learn to properly tune your shaft w/BH
Knowing your set-up, acknowledging its potential and personal experience may possibly guide you to choosing a differnet BH in the future if required or desired.
the easiest to sharpen, and keep sharp, is a three blade. a long three blade.
if yer pockets are deep, the vpa terminator is the one to get. it's a tank killer, super strong. it has the potential to kill any critter in the world, let alone north america.
else for folks like me with a champagne taste and a beer pocket book, i use wensel woodsman broadheads exclusively.

Same design as the Woodsman Elite or Terminators, same one piece construction, but single beveled. Easy sharpening and incredible penetration, especially in bone.
There's so many broadheads out there, I can't keep track. Every time another thread like this pops up, I hear about another couple of BHs that I didn't know existed.
The main thing, IMO, is to make sure your arrow flies right, the head is sharp, and the head is CUT ON CONTACT. I get sick to my stomach when I see those stupid bullet-pointed broadheads on the shelves at archery shops. I don't care how they fly, if they don't start cutting as soon as they hit, they aren't doing their job. I hunted with a crossbow hunter for a couple years, and he used heads of that style. Blood trails were almost non-existant, and we almost never found the deer he hit with them.
:mad: :mad: I use to say Magnus II till I bought a pack of them and when I opened them and seen the other side where they had low spots in the edge. I emailed them and they said send them back. Ok send me a postage paid mailer. Oh no they want you to spend more money to get an appropriate and safe mailer and pay postage. Heck I already paid for them and postage now they want me to pay it again, screw that I'll buy someone else's. Pore quality on their part dose not mean more money from me. :mad: :mad:
Woodsman Broadheads! As previously stated, they fly great, penetrate great, are easy to sharpen, & hold an edge.
Zwickey Delta two blades will work for any critter on earth. I've used Woodsman, Snuffers, Grizzlies, Bear, etc. but I keep coming back to Deltas, so I'm not experimenting anymore...Deltas work and are easy to get scary sharp. The others work, but for me, Deltas are easier to sharpen and they stay sharp.

Wow. I've had excellent customer service from them. I like their stingers and buzzcuts.
Before I answer...I'd like to know your draw length, bow weight, and arrow weight.
THEN....what are you planning on shooting/hunting?
