Big time!!! I think the high temps of yesterday kicked something off. I've been checking regularly and this morning is the 1st time this year that Ive seen them rolling in the shallows. I'll be after them with my 54#
Briskey elbow. Anyone else seeing them?
Go get them Izzy, just remember to take pics.
The water's still awful high around here. Haven't been to a lake yet to see if they're splashing up the shallows.
These are in the Mohawk river. Id be there now if I wasnt working. Going after work though!
Go get em Izzy , I'll be out later at a pond with my son , good luck. Drew
I was out two weeks ago and was seeing some action on the Wallkill River.Went last sunday and the river was ripping.About 3 feet up from last week.I am floating the river sunday am for smallies but you can guarantee I will have my super k within reach.Good luck Izzy.glen
what do you guys do with them after you drag them in? don
went last weekend here in michigan
been a little cold and rainy
not much spawning action yet
I've been taking some already on a local pond.Soon as the rivers go down I'll be after them there too, with my trusty '70 Grizz.Goodluck everybody.
I havent been seeing any splashing yet but usually this is the right time of year. I figured with spring being late and all, I would have a few more weeks.
I guess the 69 Grizzly is coming striper fishing with me on Saturday.
Good luck everyone!
Izzy let me know when you want to go. I am there!! They are starting up in the hudson as well! Shawn
so, what do you guys do with the carp after you arrow them? i live near lake erie. three tributaries that i go to, buffalo river, 18 mile creek and the cattaragus creek are places i see them come in. i would love to give it a try but i don't want to shoot it and just leave it on the bank. don
i was just out on the river ith my kayak and didnt see any. water wasnt the clearest though. still need to get a bow rigged up for fishing
QuoteOriginally posted by don s:

I bury them in my compost or chop them up for trapping bait
Got out of work late last night but gave it a go anyway. I tried about a mile from where they were in the morning in similar habitat but they were wayyyyyyy out in a deep channel. Water was real choppy and I didnt see a single one in range. Think Ill leave my neoprene waders home next time its 85 degrees! Shawn, say the word. I can usually get out after 3:00 so we should get after them soon as the water clears. Ill be working the opposite side of town so I cant check on them today.

The smaller ones actually taste pretty good Smoked. The larger ones can be made into fish patties. Run them through a meat grinder, mix in some eggs, breadcrumbs and onions, some seasoning of your choice and fry like a burger.
We didn't see squat last weekend, were hoping for some good shooting this one.
Adam shot two and I got one last night just not moving as much yet .
Some of the best fun you can have with a bow!

a recipe i've heard that sounds good is put the carp on a cherry plank. season with salt, pepper and juice from one lemon. bake in the oven at 350 for 12 minutes per inch of thickness. when it's done throw away the fish and eat the cherry plank. if this rain ever stops long enough for the water to settle, i think i'll give it a try. don

Take a look at these. Anyone local (50 miles) that wins one, I will Install a handle and deliver it, while we go after carp together.
One is in auction #1 and the other I believe in auction #2.
Any one arrow anything Scaley this year yet in NY?
I was out this morning and saw two sets of fish rolling and splashing in the shallows.I got out of the canoe and got close enough for a shot.Unfortunatly I missed. We caught 18 smallies until I got my partners treble hook buried in my face. spent the rest of the morning in the E R.Will try again in the morning.I did see two large snappers and a beautiful bald eagle, and NO people.nice
Charlie, let's try the creek one night this week.
Joe shot this one today with his Redwing hunter, His first shot of the season pretty far one to boot and he connects
Great shot, Joe! Go get 'em! :bigsmyl:
Way to go Joe.
 Hey Jim......tell that kid to smile!!
That is awesome! Joe is getting to be a grown man. Tell him congrats.
don s - carp were originally brought to the US as a food source when the white tail pop dropped. Ive never eaten them but there are guys in my area that do. Off the bone, baked or top shelf of the grill. Ive been told they have a panfish flavor so that sounds good to me really.
Shot one a few nights ago - got a recipe off the internet for pickled carp - giving it a try. Has to soak in the fridge for a week so I haven't tried it yet - who knows what it will taste like-but is smells like pickled herring.
QuoteThat is awesome! Joe is getting to be a grown man.
He sure is, he does all the sports at school he can and works out every week day. It wont be long and he'll be drawing more bow than me :archer2:
Ron, he's a serious hunter :archer:
Glen, I hate to hear you buried those trebles in your face. When I had the same thing happen the doctor recommended I save a trip to the ER and loop some string around the hook and give it a yank. A shot of something strong wouldn't hurt either.
Great fish and shot Joe
Terry, I am battling through a sinus infection right now but once my head clears up, I'm game. 17 people, that's a big dinner table  .
I just finished rerigging my Grizzly  Were heading out with another tradganger to Hemlock lake :campfire: :archer2:
We ended up with six today, still not spawning yet.
Good for you Jim. :thumbsup:Joe sure is growing up.They're spawning here up in the shallows.Got 10 tonight in less than 2 hours just sneaking around the pond.Only missed twice with the old '70 Grizz.
Jeff, you around the Sturgeon pond?
Theres some good action on the NP Golf Course, just dont get caught in there. ;)
No Charlie,I haven't been on Sturgeon pool yet but will be soon.I know better then to go to NP Golf Course. :nono: The pond I was on is closeby though.
Congrats on the fish ;)
If you hit em right you can have shooting all day down off 44/55 in Gardiner. Now's about the right time.
Oneida lake is just starting to heat up with the carp spawn! I'll be heading out near the end of the week in the mornings when I get home from work! I can't think of a better way to unwind after a stressfull night on the job!!
I needed to run my boat in fresh water after having it in Chincoteague over the weekend so Tyler and I went out for an hour or so. He shot 3 and caught a big turtle. The turtle went right back in. He was not a happy terrapin.
Should have cooked that "snapper" up good eating I am told.
Went scouting from shore last night. I saw about 5 small ones but it was cold and windy. I saw 3 nice snapping turtles.
Frog season starts June 15. Until then I will be looking for Carp in my free time.
Picked a few Carp last night with T. Rec. wind made it tough to see in the water but I still managed to miss a few and had a few pull outs.
Terry shot a hog, we thought it was a boulder until it moved.
I missed a goldfish but they are still on my to shoot list.
My son and I got out yesterday and he got one and I got four.Lotta fun!
Joe's gone so I just talked my wife into going with me, she's going to push the boat around while i do all the shooting for a change :bigsmyl: This will probably cost me dearly :help: Joe and I each shot one yesterday in the rain, not a productive day.
Jim,
I like that set up. how do you have to pay though, back rubs and completed honey-does  ?
Spent last Sunday and this Sunday morning on the Majestic Wallkill River, AKA the Big Muddy.Scored on this nice fish last Sunday.
BEautiful morning this Sunday. I basically played guide for my friend Timmy C. Trying to get him his first fish. Plenty of opportunities, just couldnt seal the deal.
I love this river !
Glen
Well, I had one big one pull off, even though I owe Her :scared: It was worth it.
That pic is medicine Glen. Glad you had fun. The 2 times Ive been out they were stuck way out in the channels that I couldnt wade. Im gonna have to hit some honey hole wading spots.Real nice country down there. Im going to deer hunt down your way, it will be nice to try out some different habitat.
It's all good Jim.
Glen, the Wallkill has a lot of meaning to me too.Is that 1st pic.in Gardiner by any chance?
The Wallkill is indeed a special river.
It has been the source of many special occasions and much misery. I swear that river has a personality and soul.
Congrats Glen, great Pics.
Izzy, There are some places down there that make it seem too easy. just remember the antler restrictions if you are close to Jeff. If you are closer to Glenbo, you should be ok.
Jeff ,it is almost Gardiner.I put ia at the Galeville bridge and take out at Farmers tpk.We got to the take out point and tim left the keys to his truck in my car.Had to call my daughter to help us out
Yeah Glen,I thought that looked like the stretch off Farmers Turnpike. That stuff happens, luckily she answered the phone, right?
Here's a couple pictures from the other night with Charlie. Tough night due to the Hudson River tide being the lowest that I've ever seen it. Charlie had to manually put my boat on the trailer. Good thing he is a strapping young man.
First fish of the night for Charlie. It was after far fewer shots than last time we went out. The guy is just getting to be a carp killing machine!
Charlie made a great shot on this one. Moving target and all.
Charlie did let me shoot one time.
Bow fishing is really weird here in Illinois this year they go one day then nothing for several days. The rains and high water are not helping. I did get Lucky and shoot one nice fish. My favorite fish the Bighead Carp are not up in the flooded backwaters like they have been in the last several years.
My friend shot a big one yesterday, they still aren't moving much around here.
Terry, I promise, I will give you at least 2 shots next time :readit:
I had the chance to leave work early and get out alone today. I shot 9 including a 38 pounder, what a slob of a carp'
I went out just before dark last night along the edge of the old Erie canal by foot. I had 3 shots and landed 2 fish. All were small but I shot my 1st Mirror carp ever. I could have had 2 nice snapping turtles also.
Jim That's a nice fish! What kind of area was he in? weeds, rocks, flats?
I think this rain may delay the spawn a little bit, personally I have not seen any evidence of spawning activity yet.
Clear water cruising natural banks. The big females are full of eggs yet. it's just getting started here.
Dang Jim,that's a toad.You gonna get it mounted? ;)
Joe, looks like that one is big enough to feed your boy Joe!
I'm taking Joe and his friend out today hope to have some good pics of that.
Jeff and Terry, were going to pickle it whole for some treats at Mikes, Muzzy time is coming up you know :bigsmyl:
Pickled Carp and Muzzy must be synonymous for good time :readit:
Good Luck this afternoon Jim.
Can you slice that pickled Carp thin enough for 60 or 70 sandwiches......you have make it last you know! :biglaugh:
Guys, I have not done this for the last 50 yrs. I did enjoy it as a kid on Seneca Lake. I remember guys would give the carp to people with gardens as fertilizer... What do you do with them after you shoot them. I think its good to get them out of the water because I think they eat a lot of bass and panfish eggs.. Do you eat them? If so where would I find a recipe? and how do they taste? Just rigged up my old Bear and ready to go.
Frank,
Some bodies of water the fish are best suited as fertilizer. Other cleaner bodies of water you can eat them. Here is how My friend John prepares them.

I will also use them as bait once July 15 hits.
YEAH IT'S ABLAST.WE used to have a archery division in the Barge Canal Carp Derby in Seneca Falls.A guy I know won it one year with a 55# prehistoric looking fish on a pole and released it after weigh in back in the canal at Peoples Park on Water St. Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge has some real hogs in it too.
Never had pickled carp Jim...looking forward to that and the Muzzy. Goodluck with the boys...hope to see some hero pics.

i think i'll stick to my recipe. i know it's all in my head, but, i just can't bring myself to eat a carp. don
Way to go guys! I was seriously going to try bowfishing this year. a pending surgery will prevent that though. Thanks for posting pics and taking me along. Good luck out there.
Jamie, I still can't believe your bad luck. I'm praying for your fast recovery my friend.
Terry, I appreciate it my friend. I actually fell while striper fishing(running for my pole) and hit the rocks pretty hard. On top of that, I missed the striper! lol.
I have a few weeks of physical therapy, then they want to operate. Either way, I will be ok, and I will be hunting this fall.
Keep the fish coming guys. Enjoying this thread a lot.
They just weren't moving today, the two young men had only one shot apiece, all i did was control the boat Kevin had my rig.
First 2 of the year here in NY...small creek that I don't even know the name of. Haven't been there in years. Should have had a few more :banghead:

Nice Curt!Is that an old Bear Grizz? The carp are really tearing it up in the shallows along the Wallkill.Might give it a try today.
Nice one Curt :bigsmyl:
Hey! When are one of you fellas gonna invite me to go bow fishin'? I have a '67 Grizzly just waiting to get wet. :p
... mike ...
Mike pm me when you are coming up state, I'd be happy to take you out any weekend!
Jim, Good on ya for taken to younguns out. :knothead:
Nice shooting Curt, sometimes the over looked creeks are the best spots.
Nice fish Curt.Could that creek be the Dwaarkill?
That's a tough break Jamie,no pun intended.Good luck and I hope you have a full and speedy recovery.
A 1# :notworthy:
QuoteHey! When are one of you fellas gonna invite my to go bow fishin'? I have a '67 Grizzly just waiting to get wet.
Bring it to sawmill, you wouldn't believe what you might see coming out of that pond
QuoteI have to ask, is that barrel holding your carp up? you dont even look like you are straining
Is this better.
Much ;)
That is a real hog Jim
Charlie, Thank you for the feedback on how to prepare carp...may give it a try. TG's always have answers to a question. Better than Google!
No problem Frank! Theres many ways to skin a cat! I need to find cleaner water and then I will be eating some fish.
Good luck and take pictures if you make it out. I know the canal by you is loaded with them.
(http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g295/kevsuperg/mail.jpg) somewhere in CNY. anyone hitting onondaga lake.
TTT
Time to get fishy ;)
slow around here this year
Taking my buddy Mike out in the canoe tonight after work. We havent bowfished together in over 25 years and that was just flingin cedars topped with classic Bear razorheads. Generally we just watched em swim off. Oh to still not know now what I didnt know then. I nearly come to tears when I think f all of the classic trad equipment (that wasnt really trad back then) that we used and abused. :banghead:
Muddy water again but we had fun. The trip turned into a deer/duck scouting mission more than anything, funny how that happens. I only took one shot and came up with this slob. A good night and was glad to spend some time with my oldest bud Mike. At 41 years old apiece we've been chasing all types of critters for 31 years together. Never knew a more loyal person and we really needed this trip. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMAG0562.jpg)
i wish i had a boat and a bowfishing rig i would love to try this but i dont have the stuff to do it and really dont want to blow 140$ just to test it out
nice fish Izzy! say hello to Mike!
going to try from shore this afternoon.
Very nice Izzy!
Took a walk. Saw 3 I could shoot at and managed 2 shots, but only one fish.
Here's my first for the year.
Nice job Izzy and Charlie.I hope to get out mid week.great shooting
Nice fish Charlie!
Nice shooting guys

Nice stuff guys. They're just starting to show up around here too. Got my first Thursday morning.
