Title: New to Trad
Post by: Thwacker on May 23, 2011, 08:16:00 PM
My name is Jason Todd, I'm from Parsons TN. Just started shooting trad. Had previously been shooting compounds and just didn't get any enjoyment out of it. From the first time shooting a traditional bow, I go bit by the bug and love it. I was wondering what some of yall started with, and your input. I'm wanting a longbow of some sort just can't make up my mind.

Shoot a bunch and trade them often (on the classifieds here) until you find what you like.

Welcome... you'll find no better place to be!

Started with a primitive Choctaw osage bow; 45# at 25 inch draw and the bow is 51 inches. Actually bought it at a the Driftwood Trading post. My current main bow is listed below. Took up archery in spring of 2009. This site is incredible. I have honestly learned quite a bit, and recently while in Missouri I ran into some Tradgangers and went roving with them. Welcome and enjoy.

You just missed the Tennessee Classic!   :scared:   Look up some local shoots and go to them. There is a Tennessee forum under Trad Clubs here on this site, and you might find some neighbors there. Shoots are great places to try out gear, make friends and learn about the sport.

Welcome to trad bow man!  I am hooked after a season with it.  The Bear Grizzley in the mid 40s would be just about perfect to start I would think.

Find some old timers and they can make it easier for you to get tuned up and not get discouraged in starting.

Jason.....Lost Tribe Traditional Archers club should be pretty close to you.  Their website says they have shoots at Herb Parsons Lake, how close is that to you?  Their website is:  losttribetn.com  I agree with the others, shoot as many bows as you can, and a trad shoot is the best place to go to do that.  Check out the State forums here on Tradgang, post on your situation, bet you'll get somebody close to you to help you out. After shooting recurves for about a year and a half, I wanted to try a longbow and I got a pristine used Bear Montana.  It's a great shooter and I would highly recommend them.  You can pick them up used for a reasonable price too.  It's too bad that we live in opposite ends of the state.  Good luck and welcome to the "gang".

Welcome aboard. I was where you are now a little over a year ago. This site has been instrumental in my progression and the kind advice I've gotten here has been honest and accurate. My most important lesson? Start with a light bow, real light!

Welcome, this is a fun place.  I understand what you say about compounds vs. traditional bows and fun.  For me the compound is an incredible shooting machine, it almost seems to remove the shooter from the shot.  Just the opposite with my recurves.  Compared to a compound I can't hit squat with my recurves, but I have a lot more fun shooting them.  I think of compound archery like precision rifle shooting and traditional archery like live bird wing shooting.  One is more science, one is more art.

Enjoy the journey, keep your mind open, try lots of different bows...   :archer2:
