I am wanting to plan a hunt for 2012 or 2013
Caribou hunting was poor this past year. Many outfitters closed down their hunting because of an animal die off, or at least a shortage of animals. Better do your homework early. Good luck cause "bou" are great to hunt with traditional equipment. :campfire:
You might be able to have a good hunt in Alaska on a fly in hunt but even there it's tough. The mountain caribou hunts sound like there still a good hunt but your gonna pay 8-12k for the best outfitters. I can't recommend any Quebec-lab or central barren ground caribou hunt for a bowhunter. I would pick something else to hunt if I were you.
I would love to hunt caribou... they've always been my dream critter. Now that I can afford to do it the price has gone way up & I hear too many horror stories to feel good about plunking my money down. Hopefully things will improve down the road.
Hey JT, are you considering Alaska? I would think you could still do a DIY in Alaska for under 5k.
I would check into the Isle of Newfoundland. The herd doesn't migrate like the mainland. I hunted there 10 years ago, lots of animals, ptarmigan, tons of native trout, bears and moose. It was fun, flew in to a lake and hunted like madmen.
Check out Owl's Nest Lodge.
I may be interested in going also....hitting Southern Alaska this fall, so have to check $$$$ situation after that.
yes I was thinking Alaska Maybe a Drop camp
"Drop Camp"... in Alaska? You better bring Bear spray and or a 12 Ga pump!
There are some pretty good opportunities for DIY caribou in Alaska. PM me if I can get you any info.
I am thinking AK in 2012 with a couple friends.
If I ever get back to Alaska I would do a float. We floated the John back in '02 for moose and it was truly an adventure.
