Title: Pope & Young Fletching
Post by: Cyclic-Rivers on May 23, 2011, 08:57:00 AM
I like the way this fletching looks and plan on using my burner to cut some.

Do these type fletching tend to hit you in the face at full draw?

I don't like the hard face contact, I dont mind a little, would I be better off with a Sheild cut?

These feathers are 5 1/4" long?

any thoughts and opinions are welcome.

I will get some pictures up tonight of the arrows.

I heard they make noise.  Sure look cool, though.

I'll be watching this thread, because I almost ordered some anyway.

Noise isnt an issue. In fact I like noise, except while hunting.

I was thinking about making these arrows for targets only anyhow.  Thanks for the insight Todd

I didnt even consider the noise factor!

I've got a chopper in that shape.  I don't remember any tickle, but will never forget the noise.  Sounds like a flock of 'bills coming in on a still October morning...

I like the look of them.

I didn't have any problem with a tickle.
I guess you can always fletch them up in a way so they don't bother you.

I just didn't like the noise in the woods.
I ended up trimming mine off like this....

It really helped with the noise. I thought they looked nice this way too.

Depending upon how long you make them, where they are positioned on the arrow, and what your draw check is, they may tickle or hit your face. I used them on one guy's arrows and he likes the way they look but due to a combination of all the above, one feather goes right in his nose at full draw. He says it's a little distracting.
Since you have a burner you can make them whatever length you want so don't think you're stuck with 5 1/4".

Decided to go with a long, lean traditional cut.

I wanted 2 barred and one white, but was about 12 short on the barred and the full length whites I had about enough for 11. so I went with 2 whites and one barred trying to use up what I had.

After the scenting of the garage with the feather burner.

Now I need to taper and shoot.

Those look great. I have used the P&Y cut before, actually killed an elk, turkey, whitetail doe, and a bison with a dozen shafts fletched with that style. I never heard any noise from them, and niether did the above critters.

Here are the ones I shot. I believe Rusty Izatt built these, (he is on this site), then gave them to Herb Meland. Herb gave them to me. I said those will look great on my wall. Herb told me to kill something with them, so I did.

Thanks to Rusty and Herb!!

Not trying to hijack your thread bud!

I found these to be quiet, and not hit my face at full draw. I like the P&Y fletching style.

Ken,

I have not prosessed the turkey feathers yet. I was going to make up some hunting arrows this fall with the "assitant" feathers.

I did however use a turkey secondary on one because I was short 1 feather, and I had a left wing secondary laying around.

I figured since these will be target arrows, I would just use up the accesories (ie feathers, tips and nocks)  I had laying around.

Most of the feathers you see are just natural barred feathers i ordered last fall from one of the retailers on this site. Problem was, they were only about 8.5 inches long and I could only get 1 fletch out of each.

The whites however, were all almost 12 inches long. I traded some sheild cuts for them. I dont know where he got them, but I would like to find out.

Tonight I will be cutting and tapering them to 29 3/4 iches long BOP.

remember that childrens bow I picked up last night?  It came with a free target. I will test shoot them into this target, so in essence I will be tesrting the arrows and target.

That's a lot of variables, dont know if I can handle it  :scared:  LOL.

Terry, I'll take em.  I have to move my grinding operation outside and buy a better mask per the advice of 2 people on here that have better knowledge of the harmful effects of feather dust.

Thank you Terry, if you can stick them in the freezer for now, that will keep the bugs off.  I can pick them up when we go carp fishing.
