Title: arrows are fishtailing now why??
Post by: TL54 on May 22, 2011, 08:24:00 PM
The last 2 years I've been shooting Ted Nugents gold Tip 55/75 31in long with a 100gr.insert and 145gr head and 4 fletched with 5 1/2 banana cut feathers.I shoot them off my Howard Hill Big 5 70in 46#30in draw. They used to fly really nice but now almost every shot has a wiggle before it straightens out.I haven't changed a thing except I don't shoot as much and I'm confused.By the way my 31in 2016s with a 145gr tip still fly perfectly.Any suggestions??

Brace height changed? If your string has stretched that will do it.

"I don't shoot as much" might be a clue.  When I'm shooting frequently and well I can get away with shooting a lot of different spined arrows. As long as the brace height hasn't dropped significantly, it might just be your release.

Brace height change or maybe your release.  I know if my release isnt' clean I sometimes get that effect.

I had the same problem getting good flight out of carbons with my longbow.I discovered it was a form problem.I had developed a habit of moving my head forward to meet my release point instead of coming to full draw effectively shortening my draw length thus stiffening the actual spine of the arrow at the shorter draw.I decided to give up on the carbons and get some woods as I never had the fishtailing problem with wood arrows.I had my wife grasp the arrow at full draw before ordering the woods. To my surprise I was drawing 1 1/2 inches shorter than my actual draw length.I went outside and made sure I was coming to full draw without moving my head and the fishtailing problem disappeared.

Been there! Try lowering your elbow just a tad. When you are at full draw...if you can remember,(which is my problem!), simply dip your elbow about 1-2" only. You will be amazed at how much it helps...and how comfortable it feels! Seems to work for me.  :archer2:

Might check to see if you are short drawing and causing the arrow to act over spined.  I have that problem when I don't shoot regularly.

When we don't shoot much or take a little time off, the muscle memory gets lazy! short drawing like everyone else is saying! I had the same problem years back! I now make it a point to shoot at least three times a week, in my basement range just for form and to keep mucle memeory alive! Back yard or stump shooting at least once a week!
