So I was reading and seems like people are shooting mid-sized longbows more and the same for recurves. So I would like to kinda do my own little assessment of your draw length vs. bow length.
If you could just tell me 3 of your bows #'s( sense I know a lot of you own a lot more then 3), Recurve or longbow, and what your draw length is I would be very appreciated.
:archer:
My draw length is 24 and my longbow is 62
I draw 29" on good days and shoot 62-64" curves.

while there are some caveats to the following, most longbows fall into 3 camps for bow length versus draw length. imo, these are the minimums and longer is always better for smoothness of draw, lack of stacking, and lowered string finger pinch, but up to a point where length compromises efficiency.
hill style american flat longbows with backset, straight or string follow - very low to low brace heights ...
64"/26", 66"/27", 68"/28", 70"/29"-30", 72"/30"-31"
mild r/d longbows that brace to a "D" shape - low brace heights ...
60"/26"-27", 62"/27"-28", 64"/28"-29", 66"/29"-30", 68"/30"-31"
aggressive r/d longbows that show tip reflex when braced - high braced heights ...
56"/26"-28", 58"/27"-29", 60"/28"-29", 62"/29"-30", 64"/30"-31"
my draw length is 29". some of my longbows ...
58" 50# bamabows expedition t/d (aggressive r/d)
60" 50# thunderstick moab (aggressive r/d)
66" 55# mohawk t/d (mild r/d)
70" 54# craig hill tembo (string follow american flat longbow)
I use 62inch bows for my 29-3/4 draw. The draw weight is 45# @ 28.For my 29-3/4 draw that ends up being 50#.That hasn't changed since I started shooting recurves at age 12.
30" draw, 64" bow.
I shoot 64" recurves at 32" draw.
You apparently know me - yes I do own more than 3 bows!
Of those, my favorite shooters are either R/D longbows or recurves at 64". My draw length is 29".
I draw 27 and like my bows to be 60-64"
I draw 25.5" and shoot a 8" recurve ... wish I had a 56".
29 1/2" draw
It has a lot to do with bow design of not only the limbs, but riser length. I find I am gravitating towards the 62" LB in the aggressive hybrid types with the exception of the Shrew. My MOAB is just fine at 60". Short riser recurves I can go 58"-60". I like to keep the bow as short as I can and still shot it comfortably split finger. I have narrowed my likes down to a hand full of bows that fit what I like. Here is what I own, have owned recently, have on the way, or have shot and like a lot.
PCH 58" or 60"
Shrew CH 56"
MOAB 60"
ACS CX 60-62"
Hill Country Wildcat 62"
I only own two recurves. Look at my signature and you can see their lengths and my draw length.
Most of my recurves are 58" and 46-48# at my 26" draw. I have 2, 60" and 1, 62" curves. I have some Bear TD with #1 and #3 limbs which range from 56"-60" depending uponw whether or not the A or B riser is in place.
Here's two:
1. Schafer Silvertip -- 58", 47.6#@26"
2. Strickland Stick -- 58", 47# @ 26"
28-inch draw -- 60-inch recurves, 64-inch high R/D longbows, 66-inch Hill style bows.
About a 27 inch draw: Kohannah long bow 62 inches mild r/d 50#; English Hunter longbow 72 inches 45#; Georgia Cypress longbow 68 inches 45#; Choctaw osage primitive 54 inches 45# at 25 inch draw.
My draw length on recurves is 30" and all my recurves are 64".
My draw length on longbows is 29" and all my Hill bows are 70" and my Navajo stick R/D is 64".
All my bows now are in the 45-50# range at my draw length.
My draw is 27.5 and 62" Pronghorn Longbow.
My draw length is 29".I have 2 Mojostik recurves and a Bear TD that are 56".I also have a 60" Kodiak replica from Vintage Works. All those bows shot equally well for me and increasing length doesn't seem to make me shoot better. When I drop down to 54",shooting starts to suffer. My favorite hunting length is 56".It works about anywhere but isn't so short that finger pinch causes problems.
I draw in the 31 range. I am usually trying to find at least 64" My current bows are funny. I have a 63" firefly and I have a recurve I made that measures about 63 also.
Draw length is 28. Recurves 60# and 70# 60" takedown. 65# 62" one peice recurve(much ,much smoother than the 60"ers) 3 longbows 60# and all 66"
My draw is 31" with a recurve and almost 30 1/2" with a straight handled longbow. I prefer 66" recurves and 68-70" longbows. I've only owned 1 hybrid and it was 64" and felt too short to me.
28.5 draw on a 62" curve and a 65" longbow
Rob - Extremely good input reference number recommendations.
29" draw length
Black Widow PAX & Crown Jewel 60"
Tall Tines 60" limbs & 58" limbs
Shrew Classic Hunter 54"
Black Widow PLX 64"
Draw 27" like a 56" bow but I do all my shooting sitting.
I like 62" recurves for my 29" draw, and on my Hill style longbows I draw 28" and though I have a couple of 66"ers, I will not purchase any more that are not at least 68" long.
I draw 31" & shoot a 62" 63# Morrison Cheyenne, a 62" 63# Morrison Shawnee, 64" 63# 'boo backed Ipe R/D longbow I built & a 64" 63# Sunbear recurve.
Can you see the theme here..... :D
I like a 64" LB for my 27-28" draw.
I draw 29" and have a 64" Blacktail TD, a 60" Dale Dye TD, and a 60" McCullough 59'er. I shoot all comfortably, all are about 55"@28".
First it depends a lot on the bows design! That said here are 3 of mine. 54" RER Arroyo, 58" RER XR and a 58" Belcher all drawn to 28.5"s. Shawn
30 1/2" draw with a 62" Toelke whip. It works well for me.
DL = 29.5 I shoot no bows undr 62" (most are 62' but I have a couple longer)
Bisch
31" draw...prefer my 70" longbows.
Own (2) 66" & (3) 68" all Hills/style.
thank you all for your post, this helps me kinda get a fix on draw length vs. bow length. Kinda interesting but a lot of people seem to go as long as they can unless they mentioned from shooting from a seated position then it is short.
longer the bow smoother the draw and the shorter bow stacks faster and string pinch.
I draw around 27" - 27 1/2" and much prefer a 'longer' bow .
My Belcher Union Jacks and Hills 66" and 68's
My R/D Widow Longbows 64"
My recurves ... 62"
About a 26 1/2" draw, 55lbs Widow PSAV 58"
1) Right now I've only got one bow. It's a 52" Toelke recurve. I draw 29".
2) My previous bow was a Toelke Whip. It was 60". It was long enough, but too heavy for me.
3) My brother has a 64" Whip. I love shooting that thing. My next longbow will be 62-64"
All 64" bows in my arsenal, and currently my draw length is a staggering 6". I get the results of my MRI on Tuesday, and hopefully I can get back to my normal 27 1/2" draw.
My main bow is a 62" Dwyer Defiant longbow. I draw 30".
27.5" draw, bows from 56" to 64" recurves.
27 inch draw length I prefer 58 inch longbows, seems like the perfect fit for me.
I have a 28" draw. Longbows = 54" - 66", Recurves = 46" - 58". Overall favorite is 58".
I draw 31" and shoot a 62" recurve. The shortest bow i have shot is a 60" Super Shrew
28" draw with mostly 60" bows for me.
27.5 draw I shoot recurves from 52 to 62. 58 seems to work best for me.

I still can not get over how smooth that recurve shot Andrew. Almost got me to convert from a longbow...ALMOST. :goldtooth:
I didn't know about the stats Rob showed but he is right on for me:
Draw Length between 30" - 30.5"
70" Hill Style longbow
64" Thunderstick III

Mike my poor tuning screwed it up and couldnt get it back to that sweet spot! I was considering selling it even thought its the best grip Ive ever shot.
62" recurve (52#@28"), 60" recurve (55#@28") & 72" longbow (60#@28") - all drawn to 30" and all using 30-1/2" BoP arrows.
