Hi folks
I recently came across a very nice bow (I believe it was Super Shrew). Very fast and shoots where I point. Problem is there is an 18 month wait time for any custom order from Ron LeClair. I really like that type of design but cannot wait a 1.5 for a bow... What other options are very close to this some in picture look similar (e.g. Kanati, Big Jim Thunderchild) but wanted to input from people who have shot the Super Shrew and others to compare or provide some good suggestions.
Thanks
I should be able to tell you about the Thunderchild in a week or less; mine will ship Monday or Tuesday. Big Jim's bows are about an 8 to 9 month wait if mine is any example. I think if you do a search here for Big Jim's bows, you won't find anything but high praise.
The KANATI by Jason is an excellent performing bow!
I am waiting for the delivery of my 3rd one.
I would definitely SHOOT as many bows as possible before you make your decision on both the bow and the style of grip. We all prefer something a little bit different.
Shoot straight, Shinken

Anyone shoot a Saxon Shrike - how does the handle/grip compare to a Shrew or Kanati?
Another vote for the Kanati. I wish I could've known about these years ago.
It you're bent on gettin' a Shrew, keep an eye out for one in the classifieds on this site.
there is a Super Shrew listed in the classified section under traditional bows
Hi Karl, I never shot a newer Shrew only the original tiger shrew that I didn't care for much. But, I do own two Lost Creek Lifer Ender bows that are of the same type of design of the newer shrews. They are very smooth shooting and fast, with no hand shock.
Chad at lost creek has a very qiuck turn around time and is great to work with. You may want to check them out.
I'm in western MA if you ever want to try my bows give me a shout. Glen
Never shot a shrew but my Dwyer Endeavor may be of interest. Less than a year wait, and they don't come any prettier.

Not sure how "radical" it is, but my Lost Creek Life Ender is one sweet shootin' bow.
Light, fast, forgiving, pretty and super quiet. I mean really quiet.
Dwyer Endeavor is a great little bow, but doesn't quite make my draw length the last time I checked the recommended max draw. I would also look hard at the Hoots bows. I had a 58" lost creek I loved before my draw got longer and a 60" with the longer draw I didn't like much. A thunder child would be worth a look. I want to shoot one of those. I think the Kanati would be a great bow to shoot for the next 18 months. Probably the one I would pick for a quick to get bow for a great price. I would get one while I waited for a Shrew. :goldtooth: I recently go a Shrew CH 56" carbon and it is a real sweat shooting bow. Very good speed, quiet and really points and shoots very accurate for a short bow. A little snug on the fingers, but hay it is a 56" longbow.
Not my favorite type of bow, but, I have had 2 Kanatis and if that's what you like you will be hard pressed to do better than a Kanati from Jason K.
I own 2 Kanati's,need I say more?
Shrew's, Morrison's, Dwyer's all are great bows. Look for a used one in the classifieds. Most of my bows are from other Trad Gangers. Enjoy
Another vote for a Lost Creek.
Get a Kanati and your Shrew fever will go away.
I can strongly recommend the Shrews. I have never shot any of them except those built by Gregg Coffey, and they are spectacular, especially the ones with the latest materials. They are well worth the wait. I like the looks of the Big Jim Thunderchild and the Hoots bows, but I don't have any experience shooting them. I like the idea of getting the first one available and then ordering the Shrew that you like best. I am about to go outside and shoot two of my Shrews in preparation for leaving in less than 10 days for my buff hunt in Australia.
Morrisons are great too, but all mine are the three piece models which are a different animal than the others being discussed. Bob has made one piece models in the past, but I don't think he is building them at this time.
Keep a sharp eye on the classifieds and something may very well turn up. Just don't hesitate to buy if you see something that works. I think the average time for a Shrew Classic Hunter or a Big Jim Thunderchild to sell after it is first listed is about an hour. The exceptions are ones that are heavier than average. Seeing a used takedown for sale in either bow is just a little more likely than spotting a unicorn.

Shoot a bunch
Another vote for the Lost Creeks. I own three right now & will own another. I have a 54" NAT, a 58" Life Ender & a 53" original design from Chad. I love them all & shoot all of them very well.
Good luck!
I haven't shot the Shrews or Kanati's or Big Jim's but would like to. However, I have noticed that the Kanati's look very similar to my Don Dow stik bow...similar forward handle, etc., The Don Dow stik bow is a very nice shooting bow -- and very reasonably priced. You might try one if you get a chance.

Which materials are you referring to. I seem many wood options on the Shrew and wonder what would give the smoothest draw (priority 1) and fastest arrow (priority 2). I'll keep a look out on classifieds, the problems is I shoot a low draw weight 40# @28 and most of the used bows I have come across are in the 50#s

hmmm..buy a bow while waiting for another one to get build - why didn't think of that? :D
The Kanati is a real looker, don't see a clear pic in the website showing a strung version to compare the forward handle with that of a shrew. Also noticed limb options is only in "amber-boo" although I remember seeing a gray bark version somewhere online
Might consider the bamabows expedition. My son has one and it is a smooth bow. Very reasonable price.
I got to shoot a Super Shrew for a couple of days and was very impressed. I own a Thunderchild and would be hard pressed to pick a winner, both great bows.
Getting a lot of feedback on JK Kanati and Big Jim Thunderchild as Shrew-like bows (not to take away anything from the Kanati or Thunderchild.
How to the Kanati and Thunderchild compare to each other - I know it's a matter of personal opinion but I am curious if I have to make a choice without the luxury of shooting them.
The EagleWing onepiece is a foreward riser.
Steve,
Having purchased one of your bows some time ago, I am certain that any bow you make is outstanding! That EagleWing is a pretty little bow!

ditto.
shoot a bunch. then wait. and shoot them again in 6 months. then get one. or two. or six.
thats the great thing , you can always find two or three of what you want...
The Shrew is a great bow for sure but having shot and owned several Shrews and Kanatis I liked the Kanati better . Seemed to be the same as far as smooth drawing but the Kanati was a little quicker and I liked the grip better . I also shot the Kanati better and wait time and cost was less .
BAMABOWS EXPEDITION! It's an awesome bow with a great price tag, short wait, and Nate is top-notch to work with!
