I just finished E. Donnell Thomas Jrs' book "Longbows in the far north" today and need some book ideas. I am looking for trad bowhunting (or any hunting really) that is mostly hunting stories and adventures etc. I am on the waiting list for the "A man made of Elk" pass around so that one will be awhile.
So what do you guys like?
Thanks,
Fin
(P.s if someone has something and want to swap and read my book PM me :) )
"Hunting Open Country Mule Deer" by Dwight Schuh is a good read.
"My Neck Of The Woods" by Bryce Lambley is a good read.
Thanks Shedrock :)
These are a few hunting books i like
Longbow Country by E. Donnell Thomas Jr
Have Bow Will Travel by E. Donnell Thomas Jr
The Green Hills of Africa by Hemingway
The Traditional Bowhunter's Handbook by TJ Conrads
and i second My Neck of Woods by Bryce Lambly im reading it for the second time right now
A man made of elk is such a good book you should get a copy, you'll want to read it a few times.
A couple of books that you don't hear of as often, but remain among my favorites are by Mark Siedschlag. "Autumn Leaves" and "Searching for the Wild". Lots of other great books will be mentioned, but don't miss Mark's works.
One With the Wilderness by Mike Mitten fits that bill perfectly.
Thanks guys :) keep'em coming.
I'll second "Hunting Open Country Mule Deer."
My Mom got me a book for Christmas that she picked up at the airport called "The Bucks Camp Log." It's the entries in a log from a hunting camp in Wisconsin. It has entries from 1917 to 1932ish I believe. Very cool read.
for archery history and adventure all in one, consider
Fred Bears Field Notes
Hunting with the Bow and Arrow - Saxon Pope
Bows on the Little Delta
The Witchery of Archery
American Buffalo by Steven Rinella. Not archery, although he is a bowhunter, but you will know more about buffalo than you could ever imagine.
Excellent reading!
i second American Buffalo, that was one of the best outdoor books i ever read and Steven Rinella seemed to have great hunting ethics
"Just Another Old Bowhunter" by Tom Kidwell.
"Once upon a tine" by Barry Wensell is one of the best books I've ever read.
"hunting the hard way", howard hill.
Elkheart, Dave Petersen. Come November, Gene Wensel. The Traditional Way, Fred Anderson. These are the ones I re-read most years. Dave's other books are all great reads, and he recently re-released "Ghost Grizzlies" with some more photos, I think.
Try to find a copy of Bill Negley's book about his African experiences. I have one of his signed orginials. Truely, a traditional archery pioneer.
anything by E.Donnal Thomas
I just finished Once Upon a Tine by Barry Wensel and really enjoyed it. If you like hunting stories this is a good read. Steve

Yep a great book. I have read it four times.
x3 on "Hunting the Hard Way" Howard Hill and anything by E. Donnal Thomas
For trad archers, Fred Anderson's books are must reading. His most recent book, "Toxicated" is a group of reprinted articles by the old timers of our sport with Fred doing an intro for each author. Good read. Plus you gotta love his "The Traditional Way". Fred has a way with words.
Another David Petersen recommendation, "Heartsblood". Great book but more cerebral than a mere story book.
"Ishi and Elvis" by Jim Hamm is a great read with a twist.
"The Best of Traditional Bowhunter" edited by Gene Wensel and "A Hunter's Heart" edited by David Peterson are both very good reads, along with others already mentioned. Also "Buckskin and Bone" by Gene Wensel is great... :campfire:
Bows on the little delta is my favorite.
A Thousand Campfires by Jay Massey
The Island Within by Richard Nelson; Becoming Animal by David Abram
Bows on the little delta
The best of Trad Bowhunter
Fred Bear field notes
Meditations on Hunting (1942) by José Ortega y Gasset
translated into English by Howard B. Westcott
The ethical logic and reasoning behind hunting
Another vote for Jay Massey's A Thousand Campfires.
Everything listed so far is great reading too. I like real adventure stuff.
