Title: Choosing Carbon Arrow
Post by: abbatoys on May 14, 2011, 12:18:00 PM
For those of you shooting carbon arrows, what is your brand / model of choice? Looking to get a set to use with a new bow for whitetails. It is 50 lb @ 28 Whisperstik Recurve. Thanks, Scott

For me currently Beman Bowhunter 400's. Out of a 51lb St. Joe River recurve. 300 upfront, 29.5" long. Fly absolutely beautiful.
I have shot a number of different carbon shafts...and its tough to beat the Beman Bowhunter's.

There are a number of good ones to choose from, I have been very satisfied with Beman MFXs. I.M.O while there are a few "high end" carbons marketed well and over-priced even better, all the cheap ones are correctly priced.

When I get a new bow, I always ask the guy who builds it for his suggestions on arrows etc.

GT Traditionals 35/55 out of my 49# RER.  I went with the blems from Big Jims - can't beat the price - I think it was $42.99 for a doz shafts.  They have shot very well.

I enjoy my Gold Tips but recently bought a dozen AD Trad Lites and they fly really nice! All of my arrows are 29.5" and I vary the weight up front depending on the bow.

I use gold tips because that is what the archery store near me stocks. They are cheaper than I can buy most any other online, and they cut and glue in my inserts fore free.

Just about any stick will do it, if you put helical fletch on it.  ...  Oh, yes, it helps if they're not warped.  Haven't seen a warped carbon out of the box yet.

Arrow Dynamics Trad light for your bow.  Arrow Dynamics is the only tapered carbon shaft out there and they are the only carbons that fly well out of my Black Widow or Bob Lee bows.  You might also look at the AD Hammerhead lights.

Beman MFX Classics and Carbon Express Heritages in my book are the best.  I also like the Beman Bowhunters and Traditional Only carbons.  I like trying differint arrow shafting, its not cheap but you learn what you like and what you don't.

yer question will only yield a confusing array of arrow opinions, none of which will be nail driving specific to YOU.

what you wanna do is get yerself a carbon (or alum or woodie) shaft test kit so YOU can figure out best what'll work for YOU and not me or those other guys.  shaft/arrow test kits are life savers when ya get a new bow to wring out, and since we're in this game for life, the test kit cost will pay for itself within a very short order.

dunno how to make/build arrows?  ah, yer a trad archer and bowhunter, you need to know and do this!  we can help!  building arrows is too stupid easy!  check out our 'how to - resources' forum!    :)

Rob,
You have the gift of cutting through all the BS.
We all have tried diffrent shafts, point, insert, fletching combos, that is how we came to the conclusions that are posted above.
Hang in there, keep up the good work.

I have built quite a few sets of woodies and lately have been shooting aluminum. Looking to try the carbon route and just wanted a starting point. Thanks for all the replies, Scott...

I second[or 3rd] the blems from big jim- 35/55 cut at 30" with 150g. point shoot well out of my 45# longbow- CHEAP but GOOD shafts-- the blem is usually a slight cosmetic finish error---

I have found the Carbon Express Eritage to be the most consistent in spine and weight.Very tough as well.
For your set up you can use the 150 or if you want more weight for bigger critters go with the 250 loaded on point.

i have shot both easton axis 400's and traditional only carbon from 3R. both are great imho. axis are slightly harder to fletch because they are quite skinny.

Carbon Express Maxima Hunter 250, 75 grain brass insert and 125 grain head, flies great out of my 50 pound longbow setups, 510 grains total, 195 fps out of my Herway TD longbow.

I'll put in a vote for the GT blems for Big Jims. I shoot the 1535's & they fly great.

I just can't use them for stump shooting.

Like Rob said you need to figure out what works for you and a test kit is a great way to start out.  In general I have shot the Beman hunter, Beman Bow Hunter, GT trad's, and CX heritage shafts.  The Beman Bow Hunter is a cheap shaft and decent, but will not take the punishment of the other shafts.  I like the heft of the CX, but I don't care for the finish.  I find the GT trad to have all the weight I need, the finish is nice looking and wears like iron, they are quite durable, and the blems are a great deal.  I want to try some MFX shafts sometime, but I don't like that they are a skinny shaft and can't use my large assortment of 5/16 brass inserts and points. I think the AD's are great and fly well out of everything I have shot them from, but I don't care for the high cost.  GT Trad blems for me!

I got a few Axis 400 and 340 shafts made up. Used 50 gr insert and 150 gr woodsman head on a full length 340. Seems to fly ok. The 400 is full length, standard inser with 150 gr woodsman and it seems to fly ok too. Just not darts like I want. Going to try some GT shafts next. The local trad shop is in the process of moving (right around the corner from me) so they are closed for another week or so before I can get some help..Thanks to all, Scott

Abbatoys,

What is the center cut on your mojo? I had one, but don't remember.
