Post by: 3Feathers on May 08, 2011, 07:58:00 PM
How are my fellow trad guys doing with the turkey hunting??Haven,nt had much luck in my part of the woods.Birds gobble on the roost then become quiet.Lots of interfearence with the lady friends also.I think the weather has something to do with it.Can only get out on weekends so that doesn,t help.Well good luck to you all there is still time to make it happen...............

Season's late from what I can tell--not much gobbling after the fly down. Maybe next week?

I've been out 3 days in 2 different counties, and I had quite abit of action.  I hunted the first and the 2nd in Delaware Co. Had i think 4 longbeards and 3 jakes that hung up and didn't come into the decoys.  The 2nd I worked a tom from about 500 yrds to about 200.  he hung up, gobbling his head off.  Then about an hour later, i had a jake come into my decoys, but saw something he didnt like.  I took a quick shot at about 12 yrds and grazed his feathers on his back.  I didn't pick a spot.

This morning I hunted Putnam Co. and had a bird come in firt light.  I didnt have time to really set up, and I went with out a blind.  He came in to about 15 and saw me as I went to draw, but I never even got the string back!  I'll be out again in the morning.  good luck every one.

Lots of action for me as far as seeing turkeys, but every gobbler has been henned up. Had a nice Tom 35 yards away today with 5 hens within 20 yards. Just couldn't get him any closer. Trying again in the morning.

I've been reluctant to hunt so far since I recently switched to southpaw and am not the shot I was rt handed.I have been practicing and plan to hunt up North this weekend.Never hunted them with a cannon and dont plan to now.

Speaking of the other guys in the woods with us be careful out there a couple of buds of mine had to pick pellets out of each other after somebody thought their decoy was the real deal.

Good luck I'll be out Fri morning for my first time this yr and I still need them in close

Not to hop on the NY theme with my NJ comments, but I live 7 miles from the border.  Birds here are doing the same thing.  Gobbling up a storm on the roost but pretty silent on the ground.

I had one gobble just over the crest of a hill about 20 yards from my setup a couple days ago.  I waited and a jake appeared.  I figured the tom was following so I passed on the jake.

Once he was out of sight the darn thing let loose a thunderous gobble.  Never heard a jake gobble like that.

There was no tom.

Still trying.

I'm thinking the coyotes are part of the 'no gobbling' problem--they are still silent. I see birds in the field in the mornings as I drive to work, even saw a pair mating yesterday afternoon near the highway. A 2-year-old ran across the road in front of my car this morning. I'm hoping the correct tactic is to hunt later AM after the hens wander away....thoughts, anyone?

I had a great chance at a mature tom on saturday hunting at my friend Dave's camp . I had the double bull blind set up and the boys where gobbling there heads off. I set the dekes close and made a few calls and in he comes right past the blind at like 5 yds. I was kinda excited and hurried the shot while he was walking and missed right through the tail feathers. I took another shot at him as he got out a little and missed low . To say I had my chance is an under statement. Man what a blast maybe next time.
My son Adam had a yote come running in on him saturday while calling , so yeah I think the yotes my be playing a roll in the turkey action. I have seen them fire up in late morning and feel this is a good tactic .  Drew

For what its worth guys, in Indiana, I killed my bird at about 930 am and then called one in for my dad at about 9 am on the second to last day.  They are henned up around here.  The cold weather has the breeding cycle pushed back I think.  Normally most of the hens would be on nests this late into May.  If you don't get action off the roost stay till 11-12 if you have that kind of time.  When the hens finally start breaking for their nests the toms can be had.  Just have to have the will power to sit through their quiet time until they lose their ladies.

Had a first today. Had a Tom coming in like clockwork around 1130 this morning when all went quiet. Could not figure out what happened when I caught movement to my right. Slinking out of the woods 30 yards away was a bobcat! He stood there for about 10 seconds then slinked back into the woods. It was so cool but made me realize I was not the only hunter in the woods today!

Was hunting by my land up in Norway. Have seen tracks & knew the cats were there, but so cool & shocking to see it pop out of the edge of the woods. Will hunt there Sunday. Hunting PA Monday & Tuesday if I don't score Monday down there.
Good luck Stace.
