What is your favorite brimmed hunting hat that doesnt interfere with the string upon anchor?
thanks
I have a KOM Bomber hat that I like a lot. Doesn't have much of a brim though.
There's a lengthy "favorite hunting hat thread" here somewhere that a search should bring up. Nearly all where brimmed in some way. Most had brims all the around the head.
-Boonie Styles that either had short brims or that had had the brim cut down
-Stormy Kromers
-The wensel brothers make a "lid" just for bowhunting
and a top hot are the ones I remember:)
I'm fortunate to be able to where the cheap bonnie styles as long as there brims are around that 2.5" or shorter mark.
i like my filson, not sure what the name of it it is.. but fairly short brim and keeps the weather off...
Here's a couple I really like, depending on the weather:

My Tilley Hemp has a full brim that may touch the string but doesn't interfere like the brim on a ball cap does.
I would love to wear a Fred Bear style hat when I hunt, but it seems whenever I do, the deer always notice my big head lol.
Only reason I wear a hat is to knock down the glare off of the back of my head.
Stetson Town and Country 2" brim. Seen alot of wear.
I use a ballcap turned aroung now. If I'm in a hurry, I move it to the side a bit, then shoot.
My Fred Bear style(ish) Fedora from Three Rivers...

Stetson Open Road. Many years in the woods. Too many repairs. Great hat.

I like the Filson Tin Cloth for the short brim so much I wear it till it looks like this. This one is like an old friend. Notice the guy with me is wearing a Tilley and has slightly longer brim.

I have a new one now and one of their wool ones in a similar profile. I love em.
A Boonie Hat
or one of the Wensel Brothers bowhunting hats

I like a bucket hat, its brim is enough to keep water off my glasses, ears and neck and makes no contack with the string.

The one in the picture on the left. Crushed wool felt. Have so many hats, I lost count, but always come back to that one. Have wore that style for over 50 years, to old to change now.
I wear a 3D boonie
A polar fleece short brimed boone with the sides pulled up off the ears a bit for better hearing
Kathy Kelly out of Newberg, Oregon makes a great polar fleece brimmed hat. Google them!

Thanks guys you surpassed my expectations for options to consider...thanks to those who posted pictures as well.

I fell in love with the "Fedora style" hat made popular by Fred Bear back when I was a boy. My first was one of my Grandpa's hand me downs.
There have been many since.
My current favorite for a good ten years now is this Peter Bros. of Fort Worth, "Bulletproof" model.

I also like this cheap WalMart model straw for hot weather. (http://www.tradgang.com/upload/charlie/fulldraw07.jpg)
Good thread got me to thinking about a much needed facelift for the Stetson. Too many years of abuse through dense sticky & sharp woods claimed 4 headbands min & holes where they shouldn't be. Polished bone & tortoise shell can do wonders. Add barred feathers to the pigtail out back & it's done. Maybe some skidmark remover could help? Like the way it turned out.

With some practice, most archers will never notice the string contact with the soft brimmed fedora style.

Blackhawk,
Nice hats. I need something more stylish than my old baseball cap to cover my shiny head.
Where was that picture taken? I'm in the burbs of Bellevue. It sure looks like somewhere here in WA.
Pic was taken in Packwood, WA at last years Western States Rendezvous over Memorial Day.
Yep...it was cold and wet, but fun was had by all.
Short brimmed stormy kromer mostly.
Orig VN boonie from the "disposable" OD green bdu's. I am on my last one. The "new" ones do not feel the same...
Stormy Kromer when it's cold & either a Wally World soft cotton boonie (with the sides turned up) or a Wensel-esque cap when it's not.
It used to be a Cabelas Gore-Tex ball cap. It was my lucky hat :( but between here & Ray Hammonds (via Georgia & Alabama) it's gone astray. Hopefully it's having wonderful adventures by itself (although I wish it'd send postcard)
Straitera, that old Stetson is really a neat old hat and deserves a good blocking. It would add some much needed form to it without destroying character.
Filson Wool packer to keep warm in the north to keep still. Never an issue with string at full draw with myself.
I concur on the Filson. Keeps the sun and rain out of my eyes/off my head, and does not interfere with the string when shooting. My go to hat!

Easy - Wesell brothers hat.
I recently bought one of the [Wensel] Brothers of the Bow hats and it is a great warm weather lid. I have a wool M-36 Finnish field cap that is nice in colder weather. Has ear flaps and a soft brim.

In between or when it's a bit drizzly I like a boonie. Keeps the glasses and back of my neck dry. I have a polarfleece boonie in ASAT pattern that is a good all around top.

My Akubra Bushmans, made "Down Under". The best hat I've ever owned. I rate it even higher than my Boralinos.

Typo: I intended to say "even higher than my Borsalinos."
I like my Filson tin cloth packer.

Warm weather I wear a BIG JIM hat from big Jim archery, has a wire brim that stays where you bend it.
Cold weather you can't beat a Toboggan ( sp ) ?
my irish fishermans hat from ireland when it's cool out (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/hogdancer/P1030466.jpg)

I wear an old cowboy hat that I cut the brim down on. Have worn it for years. It has a kind of "western derby" look.

good lookin hat Bill, that last picture kind of looks like Hoss from bonanza, good buck too !
Coups Cap from Plenty Coups archery.
My favorite is the old Bighorn Bowhunting KOM hat. The brim is so short that sometimes the sun can get in your eyes ;)

Waxed cotton Filson style hat. Leather band and spray silicone on it every year to weather proof. 2 1/2" brim works for me. Got at Gander Mt, Terre Haute IN in the bargain bin for less than $4. :archer2:
If your going to shoot a trad bow you have to have a beat up old hat or you'll look odd.

I love the rack on your hat. Nice unique touch.
Blackhawk -
Packwood. That is some beautiful country out there. Only a couple of hours from me.
I definitely need to get out more.
