Title: RULE ELIMINATION......
Post by: Terry Green on May 04, 2011, 09:47:00 AM
I have eliminated this rule from the list.

'No asking about gear value in a post ("how much is this bow/arrow/quiver/whatever worth?")'

So, there is no problem asking about the value of a trad bowhunting item at this time.  However, if this type of topic snowballs and gets out of hand, we'll add it back.

I hope this goes well.

I figure things are worth exactly what the market will bear, but that's just me.

If both the buyer and seller are happy, then it's a great deal.

Thanks "T" for being willing to try new stuff.

God bless,Mudd

Edit:  I support it being in it's own forum away from Pow Wow. Then those interested could easily access it.

Nice rule change. I think its good to be able to ask people with experience in traditional archery their opinion of value on archery items. Might save a few from making big mistakes like overpaying or selling too low etc.

I agree with this change also.  Many of us probably have some obscure piece of archery gear that we believe to be either junk or a rare gem.  Having others weigh in can only add insight.

Besides, the completed auctions on the big site do not always reflect true worth.

I hope the Pow Wow doesn't turn into Pawn Stars.

Just my opinion, but maybe it's own section on the main forum page.  Just like you did with the Giveaways.

How about a separate thread entitled:  "What's it worth?" or something to that affect.  That would ensure that this particular thread is not overrun about questions on the worth of traditional gear.

If I ever have a question about value, I PM someone I think might know, or resarch any public info that might be available. Why ask such a question in a public forum? As Mudd says it is all about what the market will bring and how much your willing to pay for a given article. Can easily see this getting out of hand but to each his own.

that's not a bad idea.  maybe a sticky at the top of one of the forums, so there aren't a ton of separate threads all asking the same question.

As entertainment (ie Antiques Roadshow) it might be a lot of fun, but I agree with Mudd, where there is actual buying and selling going on, there is offer and there is bid. If they're the same, that's the real value. If they're different, then what we've got here is a standing-around-the-truck-chawin'-and-jawin' value.

Don't worry...it wont turn into 'pawn stars' I can guarantee you that....we'll put the rule right back in place if it snowballs.

Also, if someone asks about a vintage bow....please be aware that it will likely be moved to the History/Collecting forum....those boys that hang out there will know more about older bows.

What I want for an item, i.e., what I think is it's worth, may not be what you think it's worth. I think my property is worth 10 million bucks, but the guy that wants to buy it might not think that. Worth is the price you set for an item, not the price someone else sets for it.

Terry, I think that it's a good idea... I don't see the harm in just "nonchalantly" asking that question during a discussion about an item of traditional bowhunting equipment.

From my standpoint it can sure be helpful to be able to ask things like this.  How is the relaxed stance working out?  Any abuses to worry about?
I can sure understand where the rule originally came from, but if we can get by without it that is great.
FYI, the big yellow banner at the top of the History/Collecting forum still lists that question as being prohibited.  Can it be changed?

Yes Whip....there is so much going on we can't keep up with it all....less you guys help us by pointing it out...I'll get Rob to change that ASAP....and Thanks for pointing that out.  As you can see...this post was started on May 4th...and we haven't caught that yet.

I agree with Mudd, a separate forum is needed.  That's the way the best gun sites do it.  Once everyone gets used to it I think it will be a well traveled part of Tradgang.

Is this still in effect?

There's still confusion over this in the Trad History/Collecting forum, and today a newbie's (nickt2212) thread here in PowWow was deleted over a post about his bow's value.

I forgot about this post and the rule change.

I pm'd Rob a few weeks ago asking if it was ok to make a "what's my savannah bow worth?" post.

He asked me not to...

I guess that doesn't really answer your question, but that is my only experience on the matter.

I agree that checking the completed auctions on "****" is probably your best indicator of values. Responses here may or may not reflect going prices.

The mods here likely fear debates getting out of hand over this which is not really the intent of the site.

Of course, we all would like to know what a steal we found on a garage sale bow.

Thank you, Terry.

Some chaps here are so expert in buying/selling/trading bows and gear, they're in the know.

Some others of us, may need to part with something in these hard times...or need to get an idea before we'd try to post... or dicker in the non-cyber world.

First thing I always hear is, "How much you want for it?"

Shoot...often I have no clue...not being a person who buys/sells much.

I'm tickled to death to know I can now legitimately ask if something comes up, someone says they're interested in something I have.

Nobody wants to appear foolish by asking too little or too much...either getting hosed or being thought the piker.

Thanks again to our leadership.
