Title: New Protege Longbow
Post by: ny state land on April 29, 2011, 11:57:00 AM
I have just received the delivery of my new Protege Long Bow and would like to share the results after shooting it for a few days.

1. The grip is outstanding. I had sent Lee a tracing of my hand he really nailed it. It is a slight dished but nice and beefy for my wider/thicker hands, i love it. Finally a bow that feels like you have something there. The leather he used was of a very high quality and thicker than any other bow i had gotten. Very Comfortable.

2. The riser is longer/thicker giving it more mass weight (very Stable) and i believe giving the limbs more stress that improves the performance.

3.Although the bow is extremely fast, it is at the same time highly pointable. Very, very forgiving. And at the same time the draw feels like a bow 5-8 #'s lighter. The bare shaft tuning prove's that it is not.

4. It is as quiet or quieter than any straight end longbow or any other longbow period, i have shot. Yet the performance is still there.

As you can see i am highly impressed with the bow and the man. Lee is a true craftsman and the quality and fit/finish is excellent. If you have been thinking about trying one of these bows do your self a favor and do it. You will not be disappointed. I have purchased and traded many, many bows over the years and i finally have found the one!

Thank You all! it's 49# @28" 64" Lee will have to tell about the laminations but i think it's Boo and edge grain elm.

The bow is our "Protege Competition" model..meaning it has black ULZ glass on the back with carbon directly underneith (on the tension side).

The riser is bubinga with a single 1/4" phenolic lamination.

The core laminations are bamboo on the back (behind the carbon) and then edge grain red elm on the belly side, which is of course covered with ULS clear glass.

The tip overlays are phenolic and bubinga.

Brace height is ~7."

Stacy, glad you're liking your new Protege longbow. I should find out soon enough how well they shoot as mine is due to be shipped next week. My specs are very similar to yours. What drew me to the Protege was Lee's description of his bow design and propensity towards precision craftsmanship.

I'm looking forward to giving this bow a work out. I plan to take it to the Baltimore shoot in two weeks.

My problem is not finding "THE BOW", but rather finding so many that qualify for that position. We are fortunate to have a lot of outstanding bowyers making incredible bows, and it looks like Lee is doing that too. Congratulations on a beautiful bow. Glad it shoots as good as it looks.

Thanks for the kind words guys. It pleases me to see people are happy with my bows. Since I am new on the custom bow business, I am doing my best to get a few more out there (other than my local area) for people to see. Right now we have a demo bow (it is in Gary Sentman's possession right now) and am ready to sell it. Since it is a demo bow and it is ready to ship right now, I just reduced the price on that I would like to sell. If anyone is interested (it is a right handed 64 1/2" AMO Protege Competition (carbon) model and is 55#@28"), here is a link to it. Personally, I think it is a beautiful bow with a highly figured bubinga riser w/ phenolic accents. The core is bamboo with yew on the belly).  http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=48&t=001497
