Title: Did something very stupid today
Post by: mmisciag on April 28, 2011, 10:16:00 PM
Today I was showing a young man how to shoot my son's #25 longbow from about five yards. I had my bow with me as well.

In my crazed excitement of showing this young man how to shoot, I left my bow on the top of the target. At the exact same time the boy released the arrow I saw my bow.

Well he missed the target and hit my bow's lower limb. I have a Leon Stewart 3 pc TD longbow. The tip hit the lower bow limb close to where the limb extends past the riser. It cut a little hole in the fiberglass. I can see some of the glass fibers. This is in the area of the riser but just. It appears not to be the working part of the limb but is very close.

Needless to say, I am sick.

Has anyone seen this type of issue in the past and can it be fixed?

I am going to call Leon in the morning but I will have a tough time sleeping tonight.

I have plans to go to the Baltimore Bowmen shoot in a couple weeks and wanted to shoot this bow. Now I'm not sure that will happen.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Martin

Sorry to hear about your bow and yes I would be very sick . I would think Leon could fix it though . I saw one of Fred Bears bow that he gave to a local man here many years ago and it had nicks , holes  , and bangs from hard use but each spot had been fixed and still useable .

Don't beat yourself up to much. We all make mistakes. Sounds like it's repairable.

I am not a bowyer but I am sure it can be fixed.  My grandfather gave me an old Colt recurve.  A few years later the laminate separated at one of the tips.  I didn't think the bow could be fixed so I threw it away.  I later found out this could be fixed easily.  I have been kicking myself ever since.  I also found out Bob Lee built these bows for Colt.  Kicking myself again.  Don't feel too bad.  You were teaching a young man to shoot.  Very cool.  And if I ever run across this guy "Murphy"; I'm gonna shoot him in the face!

Oh no. Well **** happens!  At least no one was hurt, is the boy still wanting to shoot?

A pic would help but so far sounds like a cosmetic fix.
Murphie's Law at work, no doubt.

huntmaster80,

He does and I will take him with my boy to my local club.

It was the hardest thing not to show disappointment when he hit the bow. It was disapointment in me for leaving it there but I thought I could upset him in to not shooting again.

And yes, **** does happen. Just wish it wasn't to me...

Tough break on this one, but if you send it back to Leon I'll bet he can fix it as good as new. You were doing a good thing helping a youngster learn how to shoot and this will work out OK in the end. best to you!

keep it clean, dont touch it and get oils from your fingers on it, it sounds reparable.
Super glue

I can't imagine that the shot did any structural damage to the limb.  I think your best bet is to contact the bowyer.  I'm sure they deal with cosmetic blemishes all the time.  There's got to be an easy fix.  Good luck.

Leon is top notch, and I know that one way or another, you will have your bow back in working order. (No pressure, Leon!)
Look me up at B'more, and you can borrow my one-piece Slammer (50@28"). Just make sure that your young friend is shooting better by then!

I hope that this is your worst worry in life.

Good Luck, I feel your pain. My buddies wife shut his Schafer 1 pc LB in the door of the truck, breaking off the lower tip. He was able to have it fixed. OUCH

Anything that can be made can be fixed.  Should be a straightforward repair.

I feel your pain, but I like to think of such incidents as reminders that nothing and no one is perfect and posessions aren't so important in the grand scheme.  Sounds like you already know that though.  Good luck - John

ok, ok, I was having a mental breakdown yesterday!

Didn't sleep. Eat far to much.

But now, I'm better. I called and then rode out to see Leon. The man was packing up to his cabin to go hunt turkey on opening day. I kinda didn't give him an option of not seeing me. I did say I was in a poor mental state... (: He is a gentleman.

He said, "well, its hit in a safe part of the limb. Why don't you leave them with me and I'll bring them to the Baltimore Bowmen Shoot all fixed up. You can take these limbs with you in the mean time."

Holy crap!!!! Yeah me! Now I have to tune three or four arrows to the new limbs. btw the limbs have carbon fiber in them.

If they feel good and the arrows go where I want them too, I will be turkey hunting in the morning!!!

Thank you!, everyone for talking me "off the ledge."

Gobble gobble.

I'd send it to Leon ASAP. Don't shoot it. Just take it apart, wrap it up, and stick it in the mail. Better to be safe than sorry. Shoot it and you just might make things worse.

Ouch. Oh well **** certainly does happen.

I remember about 5 years ago, I pulled my motorcycle behind my truck and washed and waxed it really well. (The area behind the truck was the most accessible with the hose.)

Well, I then went inside and took a nap for about 2 hours. My alarm didn't go off for me to go to work, so I was almost late and rushed out the door.

I completely forgot that my motorcycle was parked BEHIND my truck, and it sat low enough that it didn't appear in my rear view. I popped her in Reverse and CRUNCH.

THAT was hard to live down. Needless to say I got made fun of incessantly by my buddies. Believe it or not, the damage was under $200. Very lucky.

Good luck brother. Don't feel bad. It happens.

It stinks that little lapses in paying attention can cause so much grief. I have a beautiful MOAB. When I was done with a round of shooting I set it on the ground, dumb. It was on some gravel. As I was walking back I was talking to a friend and not paying attention. I got to the bow quicker than expected and not only walked on the bow, but stood there for a minute before I realized it. It still shows the deep scratches 4 years later.

Without seeing the bow, I can't speak on the seriousness of the damage. Something like that could just be a blemish, or it could be lights out.

HOWEVER, if you repair it properly BEFORE messing with drawing or shooting it again...I would say there is a very good chance you could repair it.

I myself would not use super glue. I would be sure the bow is unstrung, sand the surrounding surfaces, and then cap it with an overlay of phenolic or glass. I would do this with smooth on epoxy. Have the cap fade out paper thin and do the other limb for balance. Then I suspect you will be back in business.

And I thought I was the only one that did that kind of stuff.
