This coming deer season will be my first with a trad bow in hand.
I've wore a face mask for the past 20yrs hunting whitetails with my wheelie bow.
But... I don't like the idea of wearing a mask shooting my recurve. I like to feel the string and nock on my face when I shoot.
Leaning towards the face painting game!lol
I'm a firm believer in keeping my face and hands concealed in the stand or on the ground bow hunting deer.
My questions:
Who all wears masks?
Who all paints themselves up?
Neither! Try burned cork. That's what I've been using for years. Cleans up fast with some soap and water. Save the used corks from wine bottles.
Mask for me, I can still feel my finger in the corner of my mouth.

Learn something new everyday!!
I've never delevoped a taste for wine, but my wife has! I'm stocking up on corks now!
I tried carbon cream the other day and it worked nicely.
I am used to the mask but am open to the paint idea. Whatever I find, easy cleanup is important.
I end up with fogged glasses when I try masks. Anymore I wear a beard and use facepaint on my cheeks and nose.
Unfortunately I'm drifting into snow camo with the beard. :(
I've always used a mask, but I'm open to other ideas. I don't like paint because when I sweat, the paint runs down my face.
I like that cork thing will try that
I personally don't care for the cork as much. I still have many unopened Bear face paint tubes. I use black and dark brown to match my ASAT camo.
Cleanup with paint is easy. Just get makeup remover wipes at the grocery store. They're like baby wipes but better at taking off the paint. :) ;)
Camo Buff- my kids got this for me and it works great.
Solid anchor with no string interference. VERY THIN material. No seam
Can be used as a mask, neck gaiter, cap, do-rag, etc.
They got it here:

But LL Bean has a one with the bug stuff in it.

I prefer Bear Camo Powder. (Can't recall actual name.) It's getting harder and harder to find, though.

ArkyBob on the left - Me on the right
I like the paint. Don't like having my face covered by cloth unless I'm cold up here. Like fireplace ashes with a bit of water as well. Might try that cork thing but then I have to buy wine instead of Newfie Screech rum :bigsmyl:
I'm in the same boat buddy.
I tried the face mask thing with a few different materials and just didn't feel right.
So I'm a face painter now.
Best stuff I've found by FAR is CARBOMASK.
Works good, stays on, comes off easy, isn't greasy..actually cleans your face.
Only bad thing is it will come off in rain.
I haven't found out what happens if I really sweat ALOT. It would probably come off..but a couple swipes of new stuff and you're camo'd back up.
I should clarify, I actually use both. I use a face mask with an opening from the eye brows to the chin and about an inch past the ears, into my face, with ear holes cut out. I use paint on the open part.
I like to use Spandoflage. Cut a slit at eye level. Works very well for me. When your through hunting you just stick it in a pocket or fanny pack.
I use Primos 65622 Camo Face Paint. Comes off well.
Face paint please. A mask makes my breath bounce back on me.
I have a couple of face masks I use when the weather is cold. I recently tried Carbo-mask and I really like it when the weather is warm. Goes on easy, non-greasy, doesn't shine, comes off with soap and water. It seems to work like burnt cork, but it's a bit more convenient --- and now I can switch to wine with screw-top bottles (much cheaper). :bigsmyl:
Joe
!!!!
Use neither, movement is the key or lack thereof.
My face never gave me away, a swirling wind is a different story.
Never used a mask that didn't interfere with my vision, have a stray thread that annoyed the hell outta me, or didn't freeze my breath from my nose or mouth. Tried them all from Spandoflage, Rhyno Skin, half, full, etc...
I use a camo face mask. It's the kind that fits tightly like a stocking. Works very well for me.
Spando-Flage with a slit cut for eyes , keeps glasses from slipping and face nice and warm!!
I have used camo makeup and bandana (pirate style on top and bandito style over my face). I have never even drawn my bow with makeup on. And I'm pretty regularly deadly in my dew rag. (Those last two sentences felt kind of funny typing...) So being the supersticious sort. I have the same two bandanas in LL Bean Predator camo that are almost more hole than bandana at this point.
I am a painter. Kind of a pain going out to grab a bite to eat after a hunt and may look kind of weird when you get pulled over for speeding (don't ask how I know that). But at the moment of truth masks make it harder for me to feel my anchor point and can slip around messing with my vision. No time to be worried about that.
I hate both of 'em.
You could always quit shaving around July and have a nice bushy beard by bow season.

That wouldn't do much good for some of us... :bigsmyl: white beards shine in sunlight... :goldtooth:

Well that just makes for good snow camo
Beard and Carbomask is good stuff. Comes off really easy with a baby wipe.
I have been useing facemasks for years,The spandex type are the kind I like,I have never had any problems.
Facemasks and balaclavas here. They help to keep to keep your face and head warm in a treestand and there is no mess and clean up.Gonna give the Spando-flage a try this season.
I used paint in ealrier days but have only used mask latley. Anyone know where to get the Carbomask? I've heard it is good stuff. Thanks!
I also prefer to use the spandex camo face cover and cut a small slit for the eyes. I can stretch the material enough to fit around my glasses. Works great for me and no cleanup.
Face masks for me use several thur the season to keep a clean one.Your hair and breath are odor magnets.
Face paint for me, never could get use to a mask.
I use face paint I just could never seem to achor as well with a face mask on
Face paint for me as well.
3Rivers carries Carbomask. I'm going to try it this season.
I never liked using either one but I think your face, especially eyes open, is a dead giveaway. I've become accustomed to using a face mask now. I use the one from Hunters Specialties that is tight around your eyes and across the nose but loose over the rest of your face.
Funny story but I messed up on a big buck one time using the spandoflage. I left a strip between the eyes. When I turned my head to draw all of a sudden that little section of cloth blocked my dominant right eye. Yep, the arrow went left. I was pis#$@ at the time but it's kinda funny now.
War paint all the way for me. Keep a box of baby wipes in the truck.Gone in a flash.
I like the face paint.
I like both a mesh type mask cinched tightly, and the spandex material. In my climate paint or burnt cork would run all over the place till I looked like Tammy Faye Bakker. The mesh mask helps keep the skeeters off too.
I use a mesh mask in early season to help keep the bugs off and I use a spandex type in the late season for warmth. I sometimes leave the mask and use paint instead. It all depends on where I am hunting and the type of vegetation around.

I know my face will be sweating around the 2nd weekend of September when bow season opens here in Ga.
Thanks for all the replies fellas!
