Title: truflight flu flu feathers... where to get?
Post by: Oregon Okie on April 21, 2011, 12:40:00 AM
I was checking on the truflight site but can't find a sponsor that has them listed on their site. These are supposed to be half the price of regular full length and ground to make spiral flu flus???
Anybody know where to find 'em.

3 Rivers Archery has them.  Here's a link.

That's actually a different feather from what he's looking for.
Tthe ones 3Rivers carries are simple 4" sections cut from a regular full length. They're meant to be used for a 4 or 6 fletch flu-flu.

What he's looking for is a special full length feather that's been prepared with a very thin base so it will wrap around the arrow for a spiral fletch style of flu-flu.

I always used standard full length feathers to make spiral wrapped flu flus. Always worked fine for me.

What Grey said
yeah Pat, I have too. Just wanted to see how they were preparing these. I'm sure they are "seconds" grade feathers so the make the base thin. Just curious because the trueflight website has a big hoohaw about them and a tutorial and everything and yet I can't seem to find them.

Oh I completely missed the spiral part of Okie's message.  That's what I get for using the internet before I actually wake up.  Sorry for the confusion.

I've been looking for these, also.  I'd be curious what other on-line sources other folks have found.  I e-mailed True Flight about it and did not get a reply.  Supposedly, according to some language in the True Flight website, they'll send you a sample - but since I've been waiting for some time for a reply to my e-mail I'm not so sure . . .

It looks like I'll be ordering a few from TradTech/Lancaster.

You can easily make the conventional four or six fletch big feathers from the full length feathers if you like that kind.  Otherwise, just take a full length feather and grind it down so the base is thin enough to easily wrap around the shaft.  I fletch everything almost exclusively with full length feathers and burn em.  The Tru Flights I use always need some grinding before use.

Way I grind them is to take two blocks of wood about as long as the full length feather put the feather between with the base protruding and commence to sand it across a piece of sandpaper that is on a flat surface.  You can vary the pressure on each end to get it even.

I start at the nock end and just glue that end first and clamp it for a good long dry time.  From there it's easy to wrap it around the shaft and then clamp the front the same way.

I bought some direct from Trueflight.  They're great. Give them a call.
