Title: Longbows verus Recurves
Post by: Nakohe on April 20, 2011, 01:20:00 AM
I started shooting longbows many years ago and then a few years back I started trying recurves and pretty much went full recurve for a while. I just never got as comfortable with curves and started back on longbows a few months ago. I now have only two recurves on the rack. My Blacktail and my Charlie Lamb. Probably keep them cause they were custom made for me. My longbows are as follows.

1) Big Jim Buffalo Bow
2) Charlie Lamb longbow
3) Super Shrew Gold
4) Cari-bow Silver Fox
5) Brackenbury Non-Typical

I just shoot the longbows better. Will probably add a Schaffer Silvertip t/d longbow if I find one to my likeing, but for now as has been said before. I am done buying and trading for a while anyway.  :)

I'm the opposite. Been shooting recurves for 47 years. Bought a hybrid longbow and shot it for 2 years. However, I never shot the longbow as accurately as I can with my recurves. The longbow style straight grip never felt comfortable to me. Sold the longbow and only shoot recurves now.

I like the long bows with a recurve style grip.

I'm with Night Wing.  Tried a longbow exclusively for 5 years or so and never got so I enjoyed it as much as a recurve.  It was the "old" style straight grip.  Not sure what you call it?  Painful?  Awkward?  I like the newer American Flatbow styles with center-cut recurve style risers, but recurves suit me.

ain't one better'en another, just diff'rent sticks for diff'rent folks with diff'rent strokes.  whatever makes ya shoot best will be best, says i.

I like shooting any bow. My favorite is a Jack Howard Gamemaster Jet. I like to tinker though so I find myself shooting in a bow rotation.

Back and forth pretty much describes my long journey through archery, recurves, longbows, back to recurves, then both, and now a complete convert to straight limbed, straight handled longbows. I no longer have a recurve.

I am an equal opportuity misser.  Have missed with both but enjoy longbow more.  Why?  I don't know.  Perhaps the challenge.  Agree with Rob.

I have and enjoy shooting both, but the last year my preference is Morrison Shawnee Longbow, although I like my Centaurs pretty well too!

I'm a longbow fan,I started out shooting longbows and just prefer them.I've played around with some nice recurves, but always went back to my longbows.I never really cared for a recurve type grip, the only recurves I really like are the 50's style.Because they have more of a longbow type grip.

Stick with one bow and shoot it, I too played around with over 100 custom bows in a few year period, never shot to my full potential. I am now shooting 3 recurves but all set up to shoot between 190-200fps. I can pick any of them up and shoot equally as well, I grip them the same and they all can shoot better than I can so it works for me. Shawn

Tried both, just like Long bows better myself. My good friend is just the opposite. All personal preferance.

I'm bound and determined to get this Predator dialed in.  I have a Sentman R/D longbow and started with a cheap 68" longbow. Too many years on a compound perhaps but I just plain shoot the recurve better.  Can't get it dead silent just yet.

Eventually I think a 3pc recurve riser with a set of hard R/D longbow limbs would be ideal.

Like OPRick, I am an equal opportunity misser, and agree with Rob that it's really just a personal preference.

I almost always take two or three bows out when I shoot! Longbows and recurves! I shoot both carbons and woodies! I shoot at the bale target and Mr. McKenzie! I simply love shooting! IMHO...I am a firm believer that variety is the best way, (at least for me), through which one can experience the fullness of this sport! "Shooting the arrow at the bale...what bow to use? Oh, what the hale"..."Having several bows in which to choose, stick in hand, you cannot lose"      :clapper:

I'm still on the fence.  Somedays I would swear I shoot my recurve much better, but then a week later I am convince my longbows are the way to go.  I do know I prefer carrying my longbows on long hikes!

Both styles are great bows!  I pretty much shot recurves the first 40 years of my hunting, then bought a Spirit longbow by Bryan Holley last year, and am planning on shooting the next 40 years with a reflex/deflex longbow.

Forgot to mention I have a strong fascination with primitive recurve bows. I could easily see myself shooting an osage recurve exclusively, but I'm not sure why I'm so enamored by them.

As long as I can keep shooting I don't care.
Longbow or Recurve and wood arrows.  :archer2:

Amen to all. It is what suits you best. I just find I prefer my longbows. My brother Danny is just the oposite, he shoots curves better. I just say keep shooting, no matter which it is. When I shoot I always take out three bows and shoot them all. That way I feel comfortable with which ever I pick up to hunt with. Keep shooting and have a great time at it is what I say.

I like shooting longbows better, not really sure why. Just enjoy it.

I prefer a Hill style longbow over anything. I find that they like a 7" or so brace height and a heavy arrow to absorb the masses of cast, torque, umpf or what ever you want to call it.

I'm like you Don. I have three or 4 recurves but now I shoot primarily my longbows. I take out three or four longbows when I go to the range and I just enjoy shooting Longbows. I have three Griffins, A Thunderhorn "Coup Stick", A Yeoman by Frederick, Two Navajo Scouts,A Morrison Dakota, All great bows that I love to shoot. Hard to decide which one to hunt with so I take one out in the AM and a different one in the afternoon. I guess I am hooked on shooting bows. Its a great sport.

I don't like to think of "recurves" and "longbows" as separate. I actually prefer the term..."bow."

When I chose to select what type of bow was best for me, I didn't think in boxes. Instead, I asked myself what traits I wanted in a bow...and then selected accordingly to achieve my expectations...asking which attribute was responsible for producing which trait...seeking to balance my desired attributes into one single bow. If the result was a recurve...fine. If it was a longbow...fine...and if it was a "cursed" compound...well...na, that wasn't an option because it broke my first requirement of simplicity (no gadgets that would require maintenance or adjustment).

I would actually prefer to see traditional archery 3-D competitions take the perspective of..."We are going to offer hunting type scenarios at our event (in the bush, on a game like trail, some moderate walking pace moving targets but no fast movements running, etc). Use what you want, do what you want...and may the best archer/bow win."

This is because I see the bow as a tool for hunting...and because I like simple reliability that performs.

As a result, I use a "modernized" longbow...that utilizes modern materials, reflex/deflex design, a long riser, modern epoxies, modern strings...and many things that are not "traditional longbow" concepts perhaps...yet in MY opinion, I do believe the final product has MUCH in common with and strongly resembles the traditional longbow...and that helps maintain quiet performance and excellent limb stability as well as the durable design that isn't easily damaged in adverse conditions...but with improvements/modifications in the areas that were responsible for some of the undesired traits I found among the old traditional longbows. Many of those modifications came from hybridizing some of the desired attributes responsible for the good aspects seen in the recurve (lack of handshock, improved efficiency, etc).

Before I recommend one or the other to someone...I ask, "What type of shooting do you do?" and "What do you need from your bow?"

I'm a one bow man and I just recently went "back" to shooting a longbow. Well actually, it's considered a "hybrid" longbow. All's I know is that I really like it, whatever it is!

Like others have said, it's all personal.      :archer:    :archer2:

My first was a Bob Lee Recurve back 2009 I killed a nice P&Y Antelope with it,That lit a fire that burns so hot, then I wanted to go to the Lonbow safari I needed a Longbow so I pick up a new Pronghorn just before Christmas and I cannot put it down it shoots so sweet that my wife bought me one for my Birthday in January 2011,I can not get enough of this stuff it is in my soul.
