Anybody finding some in Pa or Ohio ? Im not looking for your GPS location just a north , south , east or west.
I haven't found any in Maryland yet, the evenings have been a little on the cool side, we have had enough moisture but I think the cool evenings has slowed them down a little.
Rodney
I'm curious about ill been to busy to get out.
I have talked to several people that have found a few grey ones.
boy i must say i had them for the first time last year. in WV close to pa and man they were good eats. cant wait to eat some this year my buddys wife made them and man my mouth is watering just thinking of it. ill have to call and see when the next batch will be cooking might have to just pop in for a taste
Went to a shoot on Saturday in Toledo Ohio. There was a fella there that came from a town 45 minutes east of there, he had a sack of "Blacks".....so they're starting to pop.
feller at work has picked 150 so far...
I have found 16 white morels in my back yard (mowed area) in the last 4 days. None were very big but that didn't affect there taste.
It's been a lil cool yet here in so.eastern Il. Finding very small blacks.
I have found in our area, it is usually around Mother's Day.

Thats when I start looking also, maybe a week before.
Dan
I know some guys in west central Ohio that has found some.
Sounds like a couple of you guys are new to the mushrooming. Be awarre there is a false morel that is quite dangerous. Read up on it before venturing out.
Larry
I don't know how you could mix the two? the false looks like it is diseased and never found one in ohio
Finding them in Wa State. tripped over a couple looking for my kids arrows.
Havent found any in NY but havent really looked yet.
Usually these threads get pulled so to keep it trad Bowhunting related, I will add this:
I tend to Look for them while Trad Turkey hunting :readit: and do ok!
Lilacs haven't lied to me in years.. They start to open the morels start too.. They finish blooming Morels are hard to find, and if you do they will be large and old..
I haven't noticed the lilacs here yet but probably should go take a close look.
Just checked,, buds, no blossoms, probably a week yet before they start to open

the reds are edible, but some folks are sensitive to them.
I moved this one back....this topic is a Tradition since the 1st spring of Trad Gang's infancy. I wish we had em down here.
Keep stumping and keep hunting those morsels. :campfire:
A few here in S.W. Ohio.
Bill
brother found about 30 a few days ago.
Are there any in western nebraska outside of the platte riverbottom? Going to be up chasing turkeys again this weekend, may keep an eye out, but I'm doubtful.
www.thegreatmorel.com (http://www.thegreatmorel.com)
Would we have them in Eastern NC? I know it's too late in the season now but for next spring.....
I have been in the woods my whole life and have never seen one......I must be looking in the wrong spots....I stump shoot a fair amount ,more since I retired and I would think I would stumble on some just looking for arrows....LOL!
I only pulled one last year (found two, but I only collect 50%). :(
Nothing yet this year.
Those I found last year were beside a clutch of seven turkey eggs! So I beat out of that area and left her be (hope she came back after I disturbed her).
Ron,
The first one is always the hardest one to Find. After that, they can tend to jump at you. Last year my wife and I found about 3 pounds.
I was in the dog House for a whole because I sent our last pound to SC for a fellow TG'er. I thought we would find more but the weather turned really nice and the season ended.
Just got back from a from a walk near the house (mainly to listen for turkeys) and found a enough to 1/2 fill a qt. baggie. They are soaking is salt water as I write this and there is a venison steak thawing on the counter beside the bowl.
Tonight is yum-yum night!!
I stumbeled onto a couple dozen this morning while out walking my dog, another week and they will be every where around here.
My buddies wife picked 244 and their friends another few hundred early ones. Had to eat them 3 times last weekend with barbecued deer steaks... :D
This is a great thread.
I've wondered about hunting mushrooms for years but never knew someone to teach me. Are there Morels in CO, what other edibles would be here? The pics are great! More pics and info about what I could find out west would be greatly appreciated.
Morels are the only ones I trust myself with - if the stem and head is hollow they're safe (false morels have solid or "swiss cheesey" stems). At one of my early employers there was a large local Ukranian heritage and spring weekends they would be out after "chicks, pinkies and shaggies" with tales of the hunt come Monday.
I bought a mushroom guide and for every edible mushroom there is something deadly which is almost identical looking with names like "Destroying Angel, Fierce Adder Blood or Explosive Liver Killer" or whatnot. I also like the comments like "not recommend" or "not toxic in small amounts". Yummmmm.
I noticed many m,ushrooms are not poisonous bu not edible either.
I dont recommend it but I know an, Italian fella in his 80's whjo always said, if teh bugs and deer eat it, so can people. I always investigate wild mushrooms but did discover the "Bay Bolete" this way. Of course maggots like em too.
Steve, I kow there are mushrooms on the west coast but I am not sure of Colorodo. Usually there are Foraging forums that give local updates. I know out west places of recent forest fires are hot spots for Morels. Good Luck!
Turtles can eat mushrooms that will kill a human - as can eating that turtle's liver. You have to know your mushrooms AND your bite marks. ;-)
Crazy Turtles
Thanks for the update Charlie. You should of had Morel Smothered over easy Turkey Eggs. :readit:
If I'd a been hungry . . . ;-)
Two mornings in a row now we've had a wild hen outside the fence where our Naragansett tom is strutting and displaying. 'Ol Fred is hoping for some wild turkey 'tang. Wilma's sitting on six eggs but they were awash after last Saturday and I'm afraid it's game over for those chicks. I built her a roofed nest box - but of course she avoids it and puts them in the lowest spot outside in the enclosure.
It's funny - after the battles with raising turkeys and the heartaches of attrition to egg thieves and, once they hatch, losing chicks to exposure & predation I have lost the "edge" to kill a wild turkey. I still go out and hunt but am happy just to watch them. We had five chicks out of eight eggs last year and only one made it to 6 months old. Free range has it's costs.
Found my first Morels here in KY this morning.
The grass is just turning green here! What are prime morel conditions?
south facing slopes first, then as it warms they show in valleys and the north sides of hills, 55-60 degrees
Came across a pair behind the a/c unit at the church, last week!...If I had only had the Bow with me! :bigsmyl:
2 nice yellars, too!
Not sure about morels, but come the opener of elk season, there are a good number of edible mushrooms in the mountains. We have lots of chantarelles, which are excellent eating.
I'v read Morels like burned over areas, I haven't found any in years.
Here's a map that you might enjoy: Morel Progression Sightings Map (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=202513937748977222673.00049c7e20fbcb2a2d3c4&source=embed&ll=37.0625,-95.677068&spn=80.249559,185.361328&z=4&iwloc=00049c7e26d0486f3f791) . There's another web site that has something similar; if I can find it and it's worth it, I'll post that as well.
None here yet in the Granite Headed State. The robins bent their beaks trying to dig worms in the front yard this morning.
how about a few recipe's? i know ya can just add them along side steak but what else ya got?

Greg,
Spring time brings the morels for about a month or so. Usually when the Temps are a high of 55-65 during the day and acouple days after a rain you will find best conditions.
Ken,
Anything goes well with Morel. There are a lot of recipes out there. I like them in sauces and when fresh I like them fried with a light coat of flour and in butter on a cast iron skillet.
Just wettn the appetite. With the cold spring in our parts my guess we won't be seeing the first ones until the 1st week of May.
Charlie,
you HAVE to post the picls that you emailed me!
Twist my Arm Ken.
Although ones like Smoke's are more appealing to the Culinary Market, These large ones usually taste great too.

dont drool. ;)
This thread should be deleted until we can get a few mushrooms in MT! I've resisted posting hoping this would go away, but it's too good. Pics are great and expect some pics of my own to make you guys jealous once they come out.
Perch fishing starts next week, a staple spring crop along with mushrooms here in western MT. They don't have much to do with archery other than the fish fries we have in hunting camp in September.
Keep pickin'
found a couple dozen around my area but it has been a month or more since i have found any. they started popping up about the middle of march
I found 251 on 4/9 and 4/10
We call these the "Little Grey Mushrooms" and they are normally found in clusters. They are the same as big morels and taste every bit as good except they are half the size or smaller.
I hunt all mine in the river bottoms or close to it. The big white or blonde morels can be found in the bottoms or even up near ridge tops.
Unfortunately I cannot find the pictures on my computer. If I locate them I'll come back and post em.
I can't find the pic anywhere, but they look exactly like the picture that Smoke posted.
Very tasty!
Found 70 white morels day before yesterday.
4 Quart ziploc bags full all cleaned and sliced ready to bread and fry. MMMmmmmm Good!

i was all pumped to go mushroom hunting today but the 2 inches of snow on the ground put the kabash to thtat!!!! :banghead:
I thought you had snow all year Ken :bigsmyl: What's a couple inches :archer: I'll be keeping an eye out for some today.
Wow Semo Hunter what a haul.I'll be watching for them while stumping and turkey hunting.Usually don't start finding them until early May around here.
Those are HUGE Charlie. And Semo has way too many for one person, if you run outta room, I'll send my address. Seriously though, in one word AWESOME!!!

Some That (toecutter) Nate and I found last year , hope for a repeat in a couple weeks. Drew
Charlie did you get the big ones in New York ??????
Cut'm in half blanch for about 20 or 30 sec., butter and soy in a frying pan and enjoy. The soy just adds that little extra that makes it my favorite recipe,
Smoke1953...that sounds good, maybe just a touch of garlic?
Just looked for the first time this year. Went to a couple of my hotspots..........nada! But soon............
picked close to 10 pounds of yellows and grays here so far
I used to live right across the river from you Aaron near Troy and Old Monroe, Mo.
Those river bottoms up there are chocked full of morels! There are guys who literally load the john boat with them every year.
I went this evening and found 10 of the early caps. No morels yet it has been a cold spring.
Drew, you beat me to it!! Dave said they had snow on the ground yesterday morning, but the weather looks good this week!
Southwest Ohio (North East/South East Butler County) has been producing hundreds of Snakeheads as well as a few handfuls of grays. Little later side of things in this part of the country.
Smoke, that picture is incredible. I sent a copy to my wife and I have it as my background. Hope that's ok.
Thanks and no problem using it. That particular morel was only an inch tall and the first I found last year. Laid the camera on the ground to get the shot.
I had a fun day Saturday. Went turkey hunting with no luck but ended up finding these. I had a nice walk with some reward for it.

Found 19 in Southeast Iowa this weekend.. Hopefully more to come!! Grays and Yellows! They went straight to the skillet.. yuuummmmmm....

Yes Ron, Found them By New Paltz. You would hate me but we sold the big ones to a restaurant who had VIP guests. He stuffed them individually and served them to the customers. we knew Sam, the proprietor of the restaurant and these mushrooms paid for our fishing trip the following day and we received a free meal off his menu.
Not to worry we had 5 more pounds we enjoyed ourselves. Sometimes when you get that many our only option would be dry them out or eat them up. at the time I didn't have a good drying method so we ate to our hearts content and made a few bucks also.
Nothing wrong with financing some outdoor fun or paying for a meal with the barter system  I still can't believe that I have never seen them in the woods. I'll try again this week!
First ones always the hardest Ron, I just peeked at a mushroom hunting Forum,
They have found some in Columbia County and in Westchester CO. Plus a few over the border in Connecticut, I think they will be here in a week or so.
Temps have been a tad on the cool side but close and rain conditions have been not only right, they have been perfect.
Thanks for all the great Morel info ! Here's my recipe :
First - you have to find them
Second - trim the bottom of the stem if there's any brown on it and cut them in half length wise
Third - soak them in salt water for about an hour while stirring from time to time
Fourth - lay them on paper towels and dry them off
Fifth - roll them in flour and fry on medium heat in butter till there crispy brown . Add salt and pepper to taste and enjoy with deer steak or fresh wild turkey breast !!
I pretty much do mine the same way, but I run mine through an egg wash bath first. It's just a couple eggs beaten with a splash of milk to thin the eggs down a little bit. Then roll in seasoned flour and either deep fry in a fry daddy or put a inch or two of oil in a large skillet and pan fry. If I have turkey breast it gets prepared the same way, add a skillet full of fried taters or home made french fries and its Game On!! :goldtooth:
I found 128 in Pike County Illinois this weekend in about 3 hours of looking.
Haven't found any here yet, but by this weekend they should be popping up. The weather has been horrible this spring. But this week it is supposed to rain almost everyday then warm up Friday and Saturday. So while we are out trout fishing on opening day I will have to go looking for some more "crawlers"! LOL
Would they live pine forests or do they prefer hardwoods?
i have found about 1000 so far..finding mine close to cherry, ash and poplar.
I found some today, at the local Hy Vee supermarket, $9.00 for an 8 ounce freeze dried bag of them!
They should be popping up here in the next weak or so.
It was a good day in Iowa!!
I didnt find an in NY today. A buddy found a bunch of false ones though.
Caleb,
I'd Say
15 pounds worth 6 giant eagle bags worth south west mmmmmmmmmmmmmm good stuff only 2 false ones in the bunch going stumpin tomorrow hope i see more
Can someone please show pictures of how you cook/prepair these, we have nothing that I know of like those here in Australia.
Cheers
well im just going to say mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
just got done munching them for lunch did i type
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmGOOD
i find tons of those things round me. ive always been scared to eat 1 and end up eatin a poisonous 1. might have to try em
none on the mountain, John did pick a bunch of fiddlebacks though.
Reddog- Rarely...maybe? I've only heard of anyone finding them in pines a time or two, and not very many at that. Your better off in river/creek bottoms with lots of elm, ash, maple, and oak trees.
Piggy- If you have access to some fresh portabello mushrooms like in grocery stores you can fix them the same way and they are real good, not as good as wild morels but a close second. Slice in 1/4" strips, dip in raw scrambled egg, flour them, and fry in a deep fryer or skillet with an inch of oil until golden brown, salt lightly after they come out.
$bowhunter$- The true white or grey morels that look like the picture that Caleb Andes just posted are harmless and extremely tasty. You should try some and if your not sure what you got then post a pic of them here and we will help identify. You don't know what your missing.
Just don't pic anything that doesn't look exactly like the pics Caleb posted, with the exception that they can vary in color from grey, to white, to kinda like a vanilla blonde or yellowish color. The unmistakeable texture and shape of the cap is the only identification you need. You can also get a book on wild mushrooms and carry with you when you hunt. My state Conservation department offers them to residents for free. You should call your Conservation department and see if they have such a free publication as well, I bet they do or at least something for a small fee.
Found a few small Grey ones this evening. Will enjoy supper tomorrow!!
Saw a smart pop off about this thread this morning on another thread that is now gone.
For those of you who weren't here when Trad Gang was started, Morel Mushroom threads are a tradition here. They go hand in hand with Turkey hunting, stump shooting, and spring scouting.
Its just a topic that we have always allowed since the beginning.
So, you see someone gripping about mushroom threads....just let them know they have been allowed since day one. But the daily news report has not, neither the daily weather report.
If folks would read the rules they would have much less grief here. Have fun guys.
Carry on.....oh, if someone hits the mother load....send me a coupe would ya? We don't have em down here.
Found a false Morel after Turkey Hunting Yesterday. I know IndianaBowman found a few False Morels as well in Columbia County.
The real ones should be here any day!
Terry, I'll send you some if I find a bunch, I sent some to Ray last year much to my wife's dismay, but I was sure I would find more---- Never did :banghead:
How far south do they range? I've guessing from most of the posts that their range seems to be the midwest, great lakes states, appalachians, ohio valley, etc.
Charlie, below is a picture of one of the false morels I found. I found about 10 of them. Didn't find a single edible one.
Dang Terry, thats all Ive ever found. Do they grow in the same places?
I found 6 whites (4"-6")in my backyard over the weekend. I just soak in salt water for a few minutes, dry, and then sautee in butter.
That's a red mushroom you got there Indiana Bowman, lots of people around here eat those too, but I don't. I'm not taking a chance with anything but a morel whether it be grey or white.
Terry G.- If it stops raining here this afternoon and I can get out lookin' I'll see what I can find. I'm sure they are still up here, but normally things wind down in May and the morels are just about done. If I locate some I'll get your mailing address and send some your direction. I've eaten plenty and nearly got my fill so far.
O.K., I need to ask. What's up with the H20 soaking of these mushrooms? I find my fair share, but I've never even heard of this? Enlighten me. Good job pickers, we're still 2 weeks out in MT.
Good job Terry Green, morels are primal and have a place...if a person doesn't understand, they just don't understand. Too bad for them.
soaking in saltwater is just to get the bugs out . otherwise its not nessesary.
Terry R, That's what we always called a false Morel. I'm not sure what a "red mushroom" is but it could be I guess. I know some people can eat False Morels with no ill affects and others get bad stomach problems. I just assume not try it.
We'll be finding them Saturday I am sure. But then again, they call it hunting and not gathering for a reason ;) ;)
Can they be found in Oklahoma? Thanks Terry, this is good stuff.
Ive picked close to 400 on three outings! A little slow this year compared to others but I'm not complaining . I have a spot that I'm checking tomorrow that I've picked close to 1,000 in a 100 yard square area in a single year over the course of several consecutive years. So many that I was crawling around on my hands and knees . All were in cherry trees !
Here's a good question ! How long does it take for a morel to grow to full length , over night , days or a week ? What I'm getting at is how long should I wait after picking them in one area should I go back and look again in the same area?
I don't soak mine, but just long enough to loosen the dirt and slice them in halves. If they got bugs inside I may soak them overnight in salt water, but usually a good rinsing after they are sliced will dislodge any bugs and send them down the drain. Then I lay them out on paper towels to dry a little bit and store in quart sized ziploc bags until they get breaded and deep fried.
bgbuck153- I honestly believe they grow at night all in one quick spurt. I've left some on purpose and went back the next day to see if they had grown and nothing changed, they only got more dried out. I have also went back to the same spot 2 days later and found more that came up since I was there last. I have also went back and didn't find anymore the rest of the season. Go figure.
Everything has to be perfect for them to pop. Temperature, moisture content of the soil, humidity, ect.
That's why they are so sought after and many people have never even found one.
I've actually had em try and sneak off on me and practically had to run em down to keep em from gettin away! :saywhat:

Are they dead trees or alive?
The Cherry trees are Alive ! The bunch of 400 that I found so far were all growing in poplar trees with not many leaves on the ground .
Too much rain to go today to check my good spot and I just finished my stock for lunch today .
Mine is alive as well.
I went to my good spot today with bad results ! I only found 10 whites and grays . I'm hoping I'm early .
The Hudson Valley in southern NY has been pretty good lately. I've found a pound or two every time I've been out. I even found about 3/4 of a pound at Whittingham! Thanks to Mike, Robert and Tyler for tolerating my "distractions" on the courses!
I found about 100 the day before all the rain and then stopped by a local spot today and found these in about a 50' stretch:
This is a great year for morels, but, as with hunting, you have to put in the time and shoe leather. I'm freezing and sealing most of what I've been picking. As is usually the case, I've been out several times searching for morels without a bow and had turkeys within easy shot ranges........go figure! :knothead:
Tony,
Those are making my mouth water!
Charlie
I know you MUST be into the motherload by now! That rain should have really put them into the final stretch.
Sad to say, but we've been finding way too many that have been up for quite some time and are just too far gone. The other day in an isolated spot, we found fourteen "half-frees" that ranged from 8" tall and UP that were still standing, but looked like they had been through a dehydrator!
Maybe finding a load of morels will make not getting a porker a bit easier........then again...........hey, at least you great hunt. Now get out there and find some 'shrooms.
picked these in about 4 hours this afternoon. Scaled 6.75lbs. We're getting $12/lb for them...
Freeman, You should get more from them. The people that are paying you 12 a pound are selling them to restaurants for 30 a pound.
At 12 a pound you are better off eating them.
Tony, I have not found any Morels yet! I have spent time looking. I had someone check out my Hotspot as it is an hour and a half from here and he busted.
I know some are being found but not in numbers here yet.
I will say I have found what I call a false Morel in numbers so far this year. In past years I have only found one or two total.
Never paid any attention to this thread or even thought of picking wild shrooms before. But saw some funky looking shrooms at work this am and decided to look at this thread- sure enough they are morels. Pick a half dozen or so and gave them to my wife for mother's day- she will have to research them for hours before she will say they are ok to eat- but they are textbook morels. Looking forward to trying them and would have or have been driving by them for years and missing out on the treat if it had not been for this thread
Thanks- Brian
Im going to be retiring next year and moving out of California. Do these things grow in north west Arkansas? I sure do love shrooms
you guys sell these things? ive went out and seen lots of these thing and picked a couple to try. how do you guys find people to buy these? seems like a good way to fund my bowhunting costs
QuoteOriginally posted by $bowhunter$:

I always called restaurants. The high end ones that change their menu weekly based on whats in season, are the places that buy them. When you go in it is best to have the head chef present because, if the owner says no, the chef will buy them anyhow. They get excited about this stuff the way i get excited about a brand new deer spot!
I went to a new place today and put on about a mile.
16 false Morels and about 30 ticks. That's not including the ticks on the dogs, both deer and wood.
Finally Found a few here in NY!
First ones always the hardest

Not a bad day, although I found more wood ticks than Mushrooms!
WAs at a Mushroom club meeting here in Western Pa this past Wednesday and they feel its all over here now.Ground too warm for the Morels.
Anybody tried to train a dog to find them?
30 years ago I worked at a wilderness camp (alternative school) in the NC mountians. Our site was a long abandoned apple and cherry orchard. I could have made millions at $12/lb.
I went for the first time last monday and we found 3, I only found 1 but still good learning. I might try for tomorrow night.
I picked about 4 pounds Saturday morning. They're popping up everywhere. Seen a good sized black bear too. Spring has been late coming but it's definately here...
There fading away in Pittsburgh area ! I did find 11#'s on Saturday under a dieing elm tree . Some were 10-12 inches tall . Went out this afternoon and found 24 big white ones .
I found 3 nice ones driving out of the work parking lot.
we have been getting straight rain for a week, I am going out after work with some boots on in the adjacent woodlot. It should be full of them.
The only thing under my dead elms is poison ivy. :banghead:
I found about 40 here in my backyard. I live in Southern MN.
My wife and I found about a lb last night.
I found 4 mushrooms after work.
Izzy, wipe the PI on your arms for good luck :scared:
Keep checking, they are here!
My wife found about 1/2 pound at a 3D shoot today. Finally one of my friends was able to witness her hunting prowess (and reap the benefits too). I only wish I had taken a picture, I have never seen a cluster so large before.
Had a great time shooting today Ron, thanks for taking us along.
Was shooting my weekly animal league and thought I would take a peek between shots by a few of the nearby dead Elms and was able to find one little gray. Planning on going sometime this week and take a little closer look around.
I've never had the chance to try them how do they taste.
