Title: Sow in heat scent?
Post by: TexasStick81 on April 16, 2011, 08:11:00 PM
Everytime I've ever had a sow in heat come by, the boars come out of the woodwork.  I've yet to use a scent that seemed to work for pigs, though I have for deer.  Anybody find one for pigs they'd recommend?

They sure like the scent of corn in heat!

I've tried sow in heat a time or two, both while hunting and trapping,  but never had any luck.  Seems their need to feed wins out over their need to breed, from my experience.

I wouldn't know whether to shoot or run with a bunch of love sick boars around me.

Don't know of a commercial scent, but I have some wild pigs in a pen and when a sow comes into season, the boar won't stop pursuing even to eat.

huntmdown has some interesting hog scents and they do carry a synthetic sow-in-heat. I am using their products to make some deer lures/scents.

You could always mix up a batch of Sow-spirilla..

Seriously with all the confinement hog raising going on I'm suprised a market hasn't emerged since they use everything but the oink on a pig when they butcher 'em

The stuff does exist.  In college at Oklahoma State in my Swine Production class we collected semen from a boar by spraying an estrous scent on a dummy sow made from an old tire, cut and nailed to a board.  The boar mounted the dummy and once extended we grabbed the penis and collected the semen into a mason jar covered with cheese cloth.  FYI, it takes about 5 minutes for a boar to complete ejaculation and the end of the penis is like a corkscrew.  Maybe I should contact my professors (if they are still there) and try to find a supplier for that estrous scent.

It would be well worth it to have every boar in the county stopping bye.

I agree Mike.  I can't believe they haven't done that episode yet.  Collecting semen on bulls was even more interesting.  I have only been hog hunting twice but absolutely loved it!  Our instructor in that class had just returned from hunting hogs in California.  I think I see a business opportunity.  If that scent can get a boar to mount a dummy it surely would be effective in bringing them in close in a hunting situation.

Coverml,  that's the product I was planning on trying.  They are connected with the Texas boar's website.  Have you tried their product?

Try-----  http://deerquest.com/index.php?page=shop.browse&category_id=6&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=26&vmcchk=1&Itemid=26

Try Deerquest.com these are smoke sticks.  The deer attaching smoke work very well.  I would assume the hog scent will work also.

Not personally but I have friends that swear by it. I've never used attractant scents only masking personally. Merle

That would make a good masking scent.. kind of like rubbing yourself with bacon grease to hunt grizzly with .. on second thought maybe not quite the same.
