Title: Went hunting for Turkey and called in the Cows.lol
Post by: Three Finger on April 12, 2011, 08:42:00 AM
Yep I was out on my friends farm this morning doing a little turkey hunting. I was there for about 1hr 30 min when I heard a loud MOOOOO about 75 yrds behind the blind. Well then about 20 Black Angus cows came around me. I think they wanted me to feed them or something. Didn't see any Birds but had a good time calling cows lol. I know the birds are in there I just need to catch them at the right time.

I used to turkey hunt a cow pasture it held lots of birds and was always good to me. The only drawback was that those particular cows flat out hated my decoys.

They stomped my decoys into the mud on several different occasions. They would literaly suround them then inch closer and closer bluffing the decoys trying to get them to leave. When they realized they were not moving the stomping seccion would begin!

Several years ago, my son (then about 13) and I were turkey hunting out of a pop up blind in a pasture.  He wanted to try to get a turkey with his wheel bow.  We had 3 gobblers and 4 hens walking right toward us from about 300 yards out.  They took quite a while, but were coming straight at us.  They walked right through a small herd of cows and horses.  At about 70 yards, my son was getting very excited and nocked an arrow.  At 60 yards, we thought we would soon have an opportunity, when one of the cows that the turkeys had walked right by, suddenly threw up his head and started chasing the turkeys around until they flew off.  My son was upset and turned to me and asked if the landowner would mind if we took some beef home instead.

LOL Great stories. Yep I could have had enough beef for a few years. And I will have to watch them around the decoys.

I've never had a bovine find my turkey call irresistible, but for that matter, most gobblers aren't unduly impressed.  They'll answer but they won't show, as if they aren't leaving a harem to go check out some strange sounding girl over the next hill.  I need to get better at it, or start dressing by decoys more provocatively.

"my decoys" as opposed to "by decoys"
