Title: A word of caution...
Post by: bartcanoe on April 11, 2011, 07:10:00 PM
Yesterday, I took my beagle to the range at our local club.  As I walked through the woods and shot the targets spread throughout the property, Rowdy (the beagle) was enjoying a romp in the woods.  Being the beagle that he is his nose was in the ground and he was bitten by a copperhead.  It didn't look good last night, but despite extensive swelling he's eating and it is looking like he'll be fine.  So enjoy your time in the woods, but never forget that there are things out there to be wary of.

I'm so glad we don't have to worry about that here. All we have is Garter snakes. Something good about living in a cold climate! Hope he's doing better soon!

Sorry about your beagle.  Be happy it wasn't a cottonmouth.  I had to "detach" one from a chocolate lab once.  Not a fun job but most dogs seem to get over it...he did.  Good luck.

wow, I hope all the best for him. My black lab got bitten square on the lip by a good size rattler. His head swelled up to the size of a basketball and was like that for a week. He pulled through as I hope your dog does also.

He should be o.k., my black lab got bitten on the nose by a copperhead last summer. Lots of swelling at first but a lot better the next day. No lasting effects.

Hope he makes it.  Seems there's always some freak accident waiting somewhere.  I learned a lesson last fall when I lost my 2 year old lab to a well in an abandoned farm yard.  One of the worst days of my life.  My dogs stay close to my side now!

My old Chesepeake would point snakes and turtles then inch up on them.  Rattler bit him in the neck and he was dead before I could get him in the truck.

I went through avoidance training with a shock collar with "Lucy".  I won't say it hurt me more than her but it was close.  On the bright side Lucy will stop then run from snakes now.  She thinks looking at them will shock the crap out of her.

I hope your little buddy get well.

I have to admit I'm amazed he didn't die considering the small size of a beagle.

Also I never realized the ability of dogs to live through a bad snake bite so often.

My 10 year old Dachshund got snake bit on her throat, 2 fang marks, never saw the snake but we have rattlers and copper heads around. I waited until the next day and took her to the vet.Was told that after 12 hours the anti-venom won;t do any good,(this was past the 12 hrs) He also said that the anti-venom is the same stuff they give to people and it costs $500... She came out of it fine after a few days, but really had me worried for a while.. Good luck to you.. We dog lovers know what you are going thru..

Thanks all for your kind thoughts and words.

Rowdy is doing well, and looks to make a full recovery.  He definitely doesn't want to follow the Vet's orders to remain calm until thursday.  He was begging to go for his morning walk this morning.  Amazing how tough animals are.

I have a 5 month old beagle, Moose, that loves to walk the woods with me. We get out as often as I can. I've been thinking of snakes lately as the weather here starts to warm up. She's a beagle so you know that nose is on the ground all the time. It does worry me a bit as we have copperheads in my area.

Hope Rowdy makes the full recovery and is back out soon!

A buddy from another site lives in New Mexico, lots of rattlers there. His vet. turned him on to a vaccine for rattler bites. The vet. clames he never had a dog die if it was vaccinated! Might be worth checking in ti for those around them things.

Snakes are the bain of bird dog and hound folks..
I will not take my bird dogs (English Setters) out woodcock hunting in low wet areas because of cotton mouths until we hit hard frost. I stay mainly to the upland areas and then worry about copperheads.

I did not spend time training and developing a bond with my dogs to have some piss ant snake kill one.

Copperheads do not seem to pack "the punch" that rattlers and cottonmouths do.  I know of a number of dogs that have fallen to those two.  My students have stories every year about dogs getting bit.  Some make it, many don't.  The vacine seems to hold some promise from what I have been told.  These are all hemo toxic snakes so its a blood thing....  Thank God we dont have the other ones (short the coral snake) they are sure death

Dave, hope he does well. When I lived in South Carolina we had one dog who was bitten twice, once by a cotton mouth and once by a rattle snake he did fine.

Had a Lab mix looking like Elaphant man with a wagging tail one night, he bore an 1 1/8 wide fang scar above his eye until he was about thirteen. At thirten a big cat took him out back behind the house as he was digging voles... sure missed that old dog snoring at the side of the bed.

Sorry to hear about your dog, I know how it goes though.

My dog was bitten by a small diamond back rattler last weekend too. He spent the night in the animal hospital, took a vial of anti-venom, and still took a week for the swelling to go down and get back to normal. Mine is still recovering a week and a half later.

Good luck to your Beagle, I hope he gets well.

NO POISONOUS SNAKES HERE, BUT WE SEEM TO GET LOTS OF PORCUPINES; I'VE HAD MY DOGS  "DE-QUILLED" NUMEROUS TIMES;  ONE WAS SO FULL OF QUILLS I HAD HIM PUT DOWN - - I HATE TO KILL ANYTHING I'M NOT GONNA EAT, BUT PORKIES GET DISPATCHED ON SIGHT.

With copperheads benadryl should be given immediately after the bite and anti biotics are a good idea
