Driving home the other day, heard on the radio that the Moose population in Newfoundland's Grose Morne National Park is 4 times the carrying capacity of the land. 4000 +. DNR are planning a huge cull of some sort. Lots of moose/vehicle collisions to help with the publicity. May be a good opportunity for this Fall. More info from DNR in St. John's. The area isn't too far to drive to after the ferry - it's just getting to the ferry. Outfitters required for non residents.
We were in Newfoundland for a trad moose bowhunt last fall. Ferry schedule mandated we arrive 2 days early so we had a while to drive around. Locals said if we wanted to see a lot of moose to take a drive through Gros Morne state park. It was one of those rainy Newfoundland days when we drove through the park both ways and never spotted a single moose. We were in a restaurant later and a local said it was not uncommon to see 150 of them. I suppose they were somewhere out of the weather.
Ahh, I would love a big 'ol plate of fried Cod cheeks and tongue. I love Newfoundland!
Bill, How did the hunt go? Better than the one in Gros Morne, I hope!
Who was the outfitter and can you recommend him/her?
Hmmmmmmm, I may have to go back to Newfoundland!!!
My Wife is from New Foundland I spend a lot of time there and have logged many miles through the bush and have bumped into many "Bog Donkeys"!!!!
My Father in law is due for his tags this fall and i told him I will be up for the fall bow season. Last time i was in Newfoundland was Christmas and on Dec 31st my F-I-L and I went for one of our "walks" to check out a spot of old timbers and walked right up on a cow in a birch bed, it was just out of bow shot but we could have gotten closer.
I wont tell you about last fall!!! if we had are tags i tell you!
Is getting within bow range of 6 moose in two days twenty minuets from your door step good? ;)
didn't know anything about DNR giving out more tags but I do know there is a pile of them out there, more Moose than people is a good thing!
Tom, although I never killed a moose I saw 65 during my 6 day hunt. Stalking to within bow range is very hard as we were in pretty much open country. I went the third week of October and the rut was over and calling was out of the question. If I was going again, I would try a couple weeks earlier. I hunted with Rays Hunting and Fishing Lodge and if going back to Newfoundland, I would go with him again without even looking for another outfitter. Everything was first class!
Bill, Thanks to your quick review I just requested a brochure.
