I've been looking at the NY stump shoot thread and I think it's time we put one together down here in Eastern NC. I propose a stump shoot on April 17th at 9:00 a.m. on the Croatan National Forest. That is next Sunday. The spring bloom is on and the fields are green! It is really a beautiful way to spend a morning, roving about killing vines, stumps, fire ant mounds etc. It will be weather permitting and I'll grill some some deer brats and burgers after. Confirm on the site or PM for more details. I know it's short notice but what the heck!
Where in the Croatan? My wife's folks are from Pollocksville and Trenton.
All right.... we are doing ours this weekend, hope you get a good turnout.Give us a report on how you made out!!
im in no questions asked just tell me where to be. ruddy
I can't say that I'll make it but let me know the location. My wife is at a horse show this weekend. Gas prices might do me in.... :(
Between Pollocksville and New Bern, meet at maitenence depot on left before boat launch on brices's creek. About 1 mile behind Merchants Store off of Island Creek Rd. Understand gas thing totally but If you can I'll walk you in with directions. were is Zoo City, Asheboro? Not to be missed if weather is good the place in beautiful this time of year, dogwoods and jasmine blooming, very nice. Joe
Ruddy, Good to hear from you. It is alot of fun. The kids and I enjoy going down there and if you are lucky we may find sheds in the fields. I found a very nice matching ten point rack in one field last year. Can you make sure Bernie knows about this and Don? Thanks, Joe
ill be there, we hope to have fine turnout :archer:

Yep. Good old Asheboro... :)
Wife's family are Harrietts and Venters'.
definately lookin forward to it, hope to have the regulars and maybe some new faces as well!
:archer2:
You know where that is, Ruddy? I should know, being between Pollocksville and New Bern, and I've heard of Brice's Creek but can't seem to place it in my mind - (at least not today - LOL). Anyway I'm aware of it (Joe sent me a PM), and would love to go if it all works out (and my wrist gets better). If it does, perhaps I could pick you up on the way, buddy. Certainly a nice idea in any case. You're all right, Joe, I don't care what the Provost Marshal says about you.
Hope I can make it but the wallet says otherwise. If I can talk my daughter out of the Sentra....

i took you there bernie. we hunted in the quail plots. ruddy
I wondered if it maybe was there and started to ask you but then thought, "Naw, that would be too easy and coincidental." - LOL
Bud, I live about 2 miles from Venters Crossroads. Those folks are everywhere, must breed like rabbits!!! Joe
Bud, On your map it is the last right shown, coming from Pollocksville on Island Creek Rd. You will see what we call the "brick store" or Merchant's Grocery. Take a right go about a mile, turn left on gravel rd to depot. There is a small sign at the gravel rd. If blacktop turns to gravel you went about 400 yds too far.
10-4. Boss gave the green light. Sentra is a check. Now just to get up and leave by 5am. :help:
And bring your flu-flus
Joe, I kinda doubt I can make it (lot of stuff to do before I leave for NE.) I will probably be around the house that day. If you want, swing by and get my ariel target thrower and disks and I got a couple dozen flu flu's you guys are more than welcome to use . I will warn you though, It can be very addicting. Don
Don, Thanks for that, will do. I'll get there about 8:30 if not too early on a sunday mornin?
we have been shooting the ones you gave us some lately and man it is fun! Joe
Spent alot of time hunting Croatan when stationed in Jville. Always got to watch for the snakes. Had to reroute my travel several times when coming up on cottenmouths, copperheads and rattlers. And always take a compass and know which direction to hit a msr, easy to get a little twisted about if you get into some of the really thick stuff.
the Croatan needs to be respected. It is big! and full of interesting creatures, the worst ones being the horizontal occupants. What did you do in usmc? I was 4/10th mar out at French Creek 1977-81 Semper Fi, by the way we share identical tastes in broadheads, I shoot all of those in your avatar. the abowyer whitetail is new to me but am looking forward to cleaving a deer in half this year with one. Killed one last year with a Silver Flame XL, what a hole!!!
My wrist is behaving some better today (so my hopes are stronger), now if it just doesn't regress on me. Gonna give it one more day before I try to draw my bow.
Take care of yourself you old warhorse! Looks like we may get a break on the weather, calling for rain on Sat and Monday, but clear on Sunday! Keep your fingers crossed. Joe
LOL - I'm a crossin', buddy!
I wish I could make it. It'd be great to meet some Tradgangers and find a place to stump shoot here in NC. Unfortunately, the honey-do list is too long, so enjoy and hopefully I can catch the next one.
Bart, Next time maybe. We are always out stumpin or 3-d or something. Joe
Joe and the boys
Good idea on the get together! I hope to slide in on Sunday also. I'll touch base with you guys friday or so.
hope you guys have a blast! no better way to enjoy a day stumping then with like minede people!
John, It would be great to see you there. I'll give you a shout today. Anna is in to show us how its done. what would the chances be of getting John Davis there?
Sounds good to me - i could use another lesson or two from both Anna and John Davis - :archer:
Hey guys, please keep me updated on the weather for that area. My research shows Sunday to be sunny and in the 70s. If that changes will someone please let me know?
Thanks.
we shoot in the rain down east :biglaugh:
Where do you get that we stuff, wet guy??? Ol' folks gits rusty quick -
Bud, Will do, I am a fair weather everything! If it's rainin don't look for me. I am keeping a close eye on it, looks to be beautiful. Iam picking up an aerial thrower from Don Batten so we can play with that as well. Look forwward to seeing you guys. Been playing with front loading some of my arrows and its working really well. Had to turn down some brass MFX hit inserts for my shafts and glue them in behind some redline inserts!! Junkyard arrows it ever there was, but they fly great at 600gr and hit hard!!
Bud, I mistakenly posted above on my Kid's Login! Oops! Joe
I can do rain. I don't do lightning. I'll be driving four hours. And four back. :saywhat:
 :campfire:
Hey guys wouldn't it be better for Bud to come down 70 and get off at the bridges and come down Madame Moores rd, instead of coming down 17 and Beaufort rd. from Pollocksville? Probably 6 of one half dozen of another.
I want to pass through Trenton off 58. There's a family member buried in Trenton. I may stop and get a photo of the gravesite for the grandkids. I should come out at 17 and then just a short north on 17 and then a right and it should be a straight shot from there.
How many miles off 17 (down Beaufort Rd/Island Creek Rd) until the right turn in Croatan?
EDIT:
Sorry....re-read your other post about blacktop and grvel rd...thanks.
just follow island creek road to merchants market. make a right directly after the market. follow road till you see the sign to go to boat landing in croatan on left. do you have an estimated time of arrival?maybe i can talk bernie into waiting at the market for ya, then you follow us into the croatan. ruddy
Bud, I'm guessing 8-10 miles from Pollocksville to Merchants Market. Keep my cell handy 252-902-9806, I will be halfway to P-ville before shoot to p/u aerial thrower at Batten's. I may be able to lead you in as well. Joe
Sorry....again. I posted on Ian's log-in. Why don't we all meet at Merchants Market and make it easy? Joe
I'm always up for "easy" - besides, what a great chance for a "sneak nap" - if the store owner doesn't get worried and run all of us malinger-ers off :D
Maybe if we eat lunch there he will tolerate us, He has in the past!!!! The boys and I have thrown back many a chili dog at Merchants.
I plan on leaving around 5am here. ETA about 8:50am-9:00am....barring any problems (fingers x)
I may leave earlier to hit somewhere for breakfast near Siler City or Raleigh.
Calling for straight line winds of up to 85mph here.
Batten down the hatches. Secure the riggings.
Everyone stay safe.
Bud, Looks like you are catching it right about now. Hope all goes well and no twisters!!! See you tomorrow if you are not in OZ! Been a nice day here, worked on some turkeys with the boys this morning but not to be. Close though, Ian stalked to within 15 yds of one. Still no rain here, maybe later. Still calling for nice tomorrow. Joe
Ruddy and I went out this AM also but no sightings or even any sounds. Had a good time out there though. Still set to pick him up tomorrow AM around 8 AM and head for Merchants Store, if this "stuff" clears out of here like they expect it to. See y'all then/there.
Sunny but windy after it passed. No downed trees.
Will pick Ruddy up near New Bern at 8 this AM and see y'all at Merchants Store - if hwy 17 isn't blocked by last night's storm. Waiting for the regular TV news to come on this morning.
Hope everyone made out OK. Sanford got a big tornado (for these parts). It tore up Lowe's hardware and damages nearby businesses and homes.
It's 0429. Heading out in a few.
Woodcock has my cell #.
Heading 64 to Raleigh and then 40 to 70.
I'll be leaving about 7 - barring any discouraging news I haven't received so far. Looking forward to seeing everybody.
Man, That was a cool shoot. A little past blossom prime but beautiful property nonetheless. Everything was so green and lush. Ruddy, I have to compliment you on your shooting, very very impressive! Bud B., It was great to meet you and thanks for your wonderful effort to drive so far to participate, you're no slouch with a bow either! Anna, Luke and Ian and I had a great time. Bernie and Ruddy are going to post pics later. We all hope to do it again real soon. Joe
Ruddy took videos today and I took a few still shots. It really was a great time for all of us, and in a beautiful part of the Croatan. We didn't have a big group for the first annual but it sure was a pleasant group - all around, and I don't think it could have been a better time. The McMillans are always so very enjoyable to shoot with, as is Ruddy, and Bud B. turned out to be a great addition to our gang - even I managed to be half-way sociable - :D
After meeting at Merchant's Store we went to the Forrest and got ready to start out on our walking shoot - Joe, Ruddy, and Bud talk it over (Ian and Anna in the background):
Anna, Luke, and Ian McMillan are anxious to get the show on the road:
Ruddy, Luke, Ian, and Joe watch Anna prepare to shoot - well, after a second look, I guess Ruddy had me mixed up with Anna - smile:
I decided it was time to brave the firing line and get at least one shot of the group from the front, having a good time - Joe, Ian, Luke, Anna, Ruddy (having just a grand ol' time), and Bud:
"Cluster Mess Shot of the Day" went to Joe, who decided nothing was more fun than sticking a borrowed Flu-flu arrow in the tree - instead of the pine cone we were shooting at:
(I have a second set to post - but after I stuff my face with some of Rose's Fried Chicken - sorry I can't offer you some.)
Looks like a good day, we had a good day up here in N.Y. also....great fun!
Whew!
I got home about 30 minutes ago. Supper is on the stove.
Here's a good shot of a good shot!
It was nice meeting everyone. I hope those that couldn't make it are safe. Watching the evening news I see just how bad the storm was that hit the middle and southern US. NC got hit hard.
But on a lighter note, the Croatan is a nice area. I like walking in dirt with my boots and not having them all red with clay. You can keep the fire ants though.
Good stuff today.
Looks like fun had by all.
Perhaps if this thing catches on we will have a national stumpshoot day :dunno:
what a great way to spend a day.
Mmmmm-mmmm, good - I won't tease y'all further.
I agree with, Bud, I also was listening to the news while eating supper with my wife and my heart went out to all those who were hit so hard. I knew that it wasn't good, last night and this morning, and as we prepared to leave from our fun stump shoot, I was fully aware of how blessed we were to have been there together to enjoy a fine day in a place untouched by the storms - Thank you, Lord.
On with the show -
Luke and Ian proudly display the Black racer that they outraced as we shot our way back. They performed a hand "catch and release" on the speedy reptile - twins are capable of great team efforts when the chips are down, or fun is to be had:
Another good shot of that good (near perfect) shot by Ian, and here Ruddy points out where his arrow struck the same target:
A little further on, Ruddy got his own near perfect shot on that pesky pink target, when only the edge was barely visible in the grass. Anna dubbed this one "The Lolly Pop Shot" There was some fine shooting going on today but, as Joe and Bud said, Ruddy was really "The Hot Shot" of the shoot:
After the shoot we returned to Merchant's Store and ate a little lunch, amid more good comradeship, and then prepared to part until "next time" we meet. I snuck a last still picture while the rest were discussing Ruddy making a final Video clip of the full bunch - getting so you can't trust anybody, huh, guys? - :D Ian was setting Ruddy's neat little camera up so he could take a "self"-video while he was at it:
Thanks for thinking up this good time, Joe, and getting us all fired up for it. Like I said, "Anytime!"
what great fun. bernie, you have posted some great pics . i will post mine in the a.m. ive hade alot to catch up on at home. ruddy
Thank you, Rudy, I was pretty pleased with what they captured - just wish I had taken more. However, I'm sure your videos will round the pictorial out very well indeed - looking forward to them.
Guys, Great pics and a really fun day. Looking forward to the rest of the pics from Ruddy. Bring 'em on deadeye! :archer:
i have to say, yesterdays event,as informal as it was,was alot of fun. a great time had by all. it was good to finally meet bud b. bud, you are an awesome shot. we also got to meet the youngest of the mcmillin clan, little mac(anna)who is an up and coming archer who loves to shoot ariels, and is quite the photographer for a young lady.joe didnt waste any time coralling up the group and got us started on our first of many targets (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/th_M4H00144.jpg) (http://s602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/?action=view¤t=M4H00144.mp4) click on image to play vid.
batman and son william stopped by for a short visit to see how we were gettin along. its always good to see the battens. bud b. brought along a foam disk, when we got to one of the food plots we proceede to some ariel fun.little mac loved it and didnt want to stop (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/th_M4H00146.jpg) (http://s602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/?action=view¤t=M4H00146.mp4) this was my first time shooting ariels. i have to say it was alot of fun. click on image to play vid.
i think everyone had a moment in the sun , and pulled off some great shots.only one arrow got sacrificed to the pines, due to a missed pinecone in the air.near the end of our shoot, ian happened on a snake, and luke not to be denied joined in the fun of catching the rascal.to watche these boys is an amzing display of unrehearsed, coordanated effort.they are definately a team to be reckoned with, the snake didnt stand a chance of gettin away (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/DSC00148.jpg)the team effor yeilded its reward (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/DSC00150.jpg) the snake was not harmed in any way and was released after the photo op. as said before everyone made some great shots, and had alot of fun.thanks joe for a great event for a small crowd,we will have to do it again . ruddy
Good viewing with the videos, Rudy - like being there with us (or being there again - LOL - even if I couldn't keep my arrow on the rest long enough to get a shot off - :knothead:
That was after my first shot that sailed way out and beyond  That's why they suggested to wait 'til the disc got lower to shoot . Great fun though. Thanks to Bud for bringing the Flu-flus and handy dandy pink disc. Gotta make some of those and borrow a neighbors field.
Looking forward to any more of the videos, Ruddy. (Or the final shot at Merchant's). Now I wish I'd made some too.
Ruddy and I stopped by Don Batten's on the way home and got to shoot Don's lattest Anneewakee Addiction recurve - That beautiful black and red one with everything but a drink holder on it - LOL. A tad heavy weight (55#) for me but I was able to get it almost to my draw for a couple of shots. It was sweet shooting and I was pleased with the shots (not like Don's though  ) .
Ruddy, keep the pictures comin! Joe
He may have had to go to work this AM, Joe - not really sure. If so, maybe there'll be more forthcoming this evening.
I figured he was out already. Had a great time with you guys. A great start to what I hope becomes a TRADition!! I have a group of Venture Scouts coming over tonight for a intro to archery! Should be fun. What was the line from that old song? "There's a whole lotta things I never done, but I ain't never had too much fun"
Looks like a great time, great video and pictures, I'm sorry I missed it.
I'll have to make sure I can get to the 2nd Annual.
That's the spirit, bart. It (or spin-offs) may be more than annual - LOL. Joe, I subscribe to that old song line, for sure. :archer:
Really hate that John Dill couldn't be with us. Hope his damage from the storm wasn't much and that he got it all cleared up. Hate to call in case he has his hands full still. Anybody heard anything more?
.........................
I decided to call anyway. His box is full w/ no room for more msgs - so I guess others are calling also, since Joe had heard from him Sun. AM, we know he's OK.
Glad you fellas put it together and enjoyed yourselves. We should hope for a World Stumpshooting day each year and get together in our respective regions and communities like we did up here and you all did down there yesterday.
Nice vids and photos Ruddy. Yeah, make it a tradition. It was a good time for sure.
Looks like you folks had a good time. Nothing like a day in the woods with good friends and god shooting.
thanks for the pics everyone! ill put mine on tonight hopefully, got to work today. i had a great time with all of you and hope to do it again soon! :archer:
Looking forward to them, Ian.
Thanks for sharing the pics. We had a great time up in NY as well. I am all for the idea of having a national stump shoot day.
the only pic i have left is the parting shot that was taken after we ate lunch together at merchants market. (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/DSC00152.jpg)
Ahhh, but that one is a winner, Ruddy. Ya done good, buddy.
What a crew!. We were turning some heads in the parking lot of the old brick store. Great pics Ruddy! Nice work on Ian figuring out the camera timer, what would we do without him? Ian will post later tonite. Had the Venture Crew out tonight and we were able to get 5 young women out to experience archery. I think we corrupted one at least! She was very smitten with it and I couldn't keep her off of the shooting line. Quite capable too, just naturally graceful and competent. A real pleasure. I love introducing people to Bowshooting! Joe
Dadgummit! I posted on Ians log in again on above message, sorry, Pray for the World Stump Shooting Day. Joe
What a fun day! Wish I could have been there!!! Looks like you guys have started a new venue of trad fun. Cool pics too!!!
what can i say, im such a ladies man, :smileystooges:
IMO we all created a nice little pictorial - I was going to say with no more shooter/subjects than we had for diversity - BUT when you stop and think about it, that is about close to the usual number we might have going around a course on a 3D shoot too. So - I guess we did pretty darned good all around. Anyway, it sure made my heart smile, all day long.
Good job on the Venture Scouts, Joe, et al.
its okay john, we dont need you anymore.
:biglaugh:
just kidding hope to see you there next time!
LOL - Yep, that's John for ya - a day late and a dollar short - missing all the good stuff.
Glad to see you evidently got a break from cleaning up your mess from the storms, John. Hope there wasn't any serious damage.
Dan, here it is enjoy pics.
