I have been using minwax stains and rub on poly for my wood shafts. What paint would be best to use with minwax for cresting? Also if I use a flame crester what kind of torch do I need?
i use testors model paint. but to be honest i have no clue what a flame crester is please exsplain.......
The flame crester is a set of three metal templates that you lay on your shaft and burn designs onto it with. Kustom King sells them if you want to look at them and have a better idea of what it is. is testors model paint compatable with minwax products? Do I finish sealing the shafts and then crest or put the cresting on then seal?
I 2nd the Testers paint.Flame crester?
Hey Tex, glad you like the goodies. I use minwax stain and water base poly. The bohning cresting paint will work. I apply over the second coat of poly and then seal it with a third. As for the flame cresting, I use a propane torch. You should keep a wet rag handy to cool the template, or it will get too hot and scorch the shaft, especially when burning some of the larger patterns. Do a little at a time. And do the flame cresting before you stain or apply the finish.
Hope you enjoy,
Lance
If you have a Hobby Lobby where you are they sell a great water based paint kit about 24 bottles for about $9. This is what i use, here are the results.
