Title: tusker broadhead shooters
Post by: sawtoothscream on April 01, 2011, 03:28:00 PM
i just order a pack of 250gr concorde left bevel from brave heart.  just read they dont come even close to hunting sharp so what are the best ways to get them sharp?

i never have sharpened heads in my life, so a simple way to get them sharp would be great.  i was thinking about ordering a kme sharpener but dont know if any of thier stones will work to take off enough metal to get teh initail edge and the file seems tuff to keep the same angle.

also how do you like these heads? seems pretty sturdy and sounds like they fly great

Braveheart also sells KME SHARPENED Tuskers.

You might want to call back and see if they have them in your weight

The KME will DO it, but you'll be at it a while.

If they've shipped, this early in the season, I'd see if you can exchange them. I got the KME sharpened ones and whooie... once that angle is set, the KME BH sharpener is a breeze to keep them super sharp!

KME tells me that the rockwell in the Tusker is just a bit less hard then the Grizzly.

Others good with files have great "how to's" on this site...I'm lousy with a file so buy em beveled!

KME is the way to go for just about any sharpening. I am sharpening impaired and can now sharpen pretty much whatever I need to with my KME. As far as the Tusker's go I LOVE mine & just got some more.

just kind of afriad to mess them up. i have tried files before and i suck haha.  then again so do my files. ill go down to the hard ware store and pick up a file and see how it works on some of the 2 blade heads i have now.  just getting the angle done seems tricky to me.

I would just start off with the file. Take them down just a hair off of the furule until you have a good burr. Then pull out the KME. It works good after the file. Too slow to start from scratch. I finish with crock sticks. Gary

Well said Gary,(well, except for the crock sticks part LOL) and thanks everyone for the help.

Let me point out that both of our sharpeners are honing tools not grinding tools and many glue-on traditional heads need a lot of stock removal on the inital "out of the pack" sharpening. I haven't found a stone of any kind that's up to the task. Grizzlies, Tuskers, Zwickys, STOS, and a few others will be much easier and faster to sharpen if you take some metal off the shoulder of the bevel with a file before going to either sharpener and a coarse stone.

Our new Super-Tuff aluminum oxide ceramic stones (the ones that come in the kits) are pretty incredible. Not braggin 'em up because they're KME Stones, rather we put the KME name on them  because they're that good. The dark brown coarse stone will get the hair flying off but, it will take forever if the heads haven't been filed a bit first.

As for filing, you don't need to be highly skilled. Just knock the shoulder off the bevel so that you're not asking the stone to do more than it's really intended to do. Files for stock removal, stones for honing. Thanks again to all!

Ron

lay the file on the bench long ways and draw the broadhead towards you. put your face close,be careful, but ya gotta look at it closely to make sure your getting it.
