My rubber boots are shot and I need a new pair. I am thinking about trying snake boots this time. I want them for the waterproof factor not the snakes. I have read that snake boots last longer than rubber boots. What are your thoughts? Here is a pair I am looking at.
Do I go snake boots or stick with rubber that will crack in two years. I use them for hunting, bear baiting, and ice fishing, so they will get used.

Look at X-Tra Tuffs, also known as "Sitka sneekers".
Try Russell Moccasin http://www.russellmoccasin.com/boots.html They will be able to answer your question if you give them a call. They make awesome custom snake boots that are also waterproof (although no non-rubber boot is truly waterproof!).
Never owned a pair of snake boots, but I do own some Muck Boots "rubber boots", they are very comfotable, 100% waterproof, and seem fairly durable.
Second vote for Muck boots!
I also like the Muck boots - in the winter time..
I don't believe the soft top would deter any self respecting snake. Look elsewhere for snake protection..
I'll vote for the Muck boots. Warm and comfortable. I've had mine for 2 years now and they have held up very well.
Just buy as good as you can afford. NO, price does not GAURANTEE waterproofness, but the warranties are better if you do get a bad pair.
Having said that, my only other suggestion is to go with a pair that has leather bottoms. They ALL begin to leak a little after some time (standing in water). You can get by a few years more years by snow sealing the seam where the bottom meets the sole if you go with leather.
I got 7 years out of mine in the swamps of Louisiana. I wear them all year for snakes in the warmer times and warmth in the colder times. For just crossing water they should be waterproof for a little longer IF you take care of them. I have some Chippewas right now but I am looking at the Danner Pronghorns as a replacement this year (18" of protection from snakes AND water depths).
Just my thoughts, but I can't imagine a worst environment to try them out.
muck boots here also. I wear them EVERYWHERE!!
Rubber snake boots from Cabelas. Been wearing mine for 5yrs and still good, only drawback is they are a little heavy.
I've been wearing some Muck boots ofr the last four years. I really like them. They have a few partial tears on the uppers, but are still waterproof.
I've worn Lacrosse for 40 years. I have some now that are 15 years old and no cracks or leaks.
I have had good LaCrosse boots but now that they are made over seas, they suck. I like the fact that the snake boots are breathable. I am not looking something to run a water trap line in, just a pair for crossing creeks and walking in wet grass. My other choice is the Muck boots as mentioned. It is a hard choice to make. I have never had one of the pairs mentioned.
I wear Muck Arctic Sport boots and they are very warm and seem to stand up well. They are rated at 40 below zero.
The one thing that the boots have to be is uninsulated. I have a goot pair of Ice Mans that are warm. I want a boot that will allow me to tuck my pant leg inside and keep me dry up to my knees.
MUCK BOOTS GOOD

X2 - Toughest comfortable long lasting mud boots. A.K.A. "Ketchikan Tenny Runners"
Muck Boots.
I'll echo everyone else Muck boots not only wear them to hunt but also to do all the chores around the ranch. Still holding up after 5 yrs.
Muck Boots are great and I've got a pair of the uninsulated Edgewaters but my feet still sweat in them. Got a pair of Lacrosse' Grange boots to wear down at Hog Heaven in June.
Muck Boots are great! The ones that look like them but are cheaper, not so good.
The waterproof part of snakeboots don't seem to hold up long around here. The first year they are waterproof, the second year...not so much.lol
We normally just make sure the water has a way to get back out after it gets in. But then again, we wear them on account of them shoulderless boys.
Forget the Mucks and buy a comfortable boot -Lacrosse. I have both and use the Mucks to tree stand hunt only because they are not as comfortable to walk in.
Jack
I read up on Kenetrek pac boots, look and sound good. Might give them a try. Have had Lacross Alphas for quite a few years. Hunted with them, no real issues, not real warm in the low 20's and below. I poked some holes in them while cutting shooting lanes in a cedar swamp, patched up fine. Have been using them hard for at least 8 years. I will keep using them for working, I'm thinking about the kenetreks for hunting. Anyone else use the Pac boots from Kenetrek?

I waterproof mine every 6 months or so.. not that we got that much water, but it also keeps them clean...
There are several knee high, ankle-fit makers out there. I've had a pair of LaCrosse for oh... 20 yrs. About wore the tread (tractor style) off them, but they work. Bought another pair of the air-bob sole insulated.
Hard to get off when sweated and side-hilling can be a trip without laces, but I never worry about "wet".
BOG boots from the farm store. Neoprene and warm. Wear like sneakers.
White's pacs are pretty nice, too.
I bought a pair of muck boots 2 seasons ago and after two years of hard hunting, they are in great shape. Very comfortable and warm too. Actually the only boots that have consistantly kept my toes from freezing on a cold morning up a tree. The only boot I will buy from now on.
Xtratuffs for me also. I walk the dogs at least a mile every day, wore my last pair for that for 4 years and know that I got over 1000 miles on them before they cracked. They have an excellent, non-slip sole, better than anything else I used on the slimy rocks in SE Alaska.
I own muck boots and xtra tuffs. I prefer the xtra tuffs for hunting, because I find them to be quieter and I find that the soles grip better than the muck boots.
Even though it seems like no one out side of AK uses xtra tuffs, I think the company is actually based in WI.
If you are near the Richfield Cabela's Mucks are on sale there.
