Yesterday I decided to go shed hunting and see if I could locate a few birds. I got about a half an hour into a walk and looked up the trail aways. I coulc see this ole bird sitting on a big ole blowdown catching a midday snooze. It was about 2:30 in the afternoon. When I first saw him he was about 75 yards out. I thought I would put the sneak on him just to see how close I could get. I pulled my cell phone out and started snapping pics each 15 yards or so. Here are the results.

In that last photo I was about 5 feet from him. As you can see he just had his head tucked under his wing snoozing away. I couldn't believe he had chosen a spot so low to the ground as the area is just loaded with yotes and you'd think he'd have sense enough to be a bit higher off the ground.
So at the "click" of the last photo, he absolutely came unglued. He popped his head up and busted outta there like you can't believe. Flapping and squacking making one hell of a racket!!! I tried to snap one more photo but it was just a big blurry mess.
I don't know if grabbing a bird and wringing his neck is a legal kill here in Ohio. On second thought, those spurs would probably ruin a fella's day.
I hope this bird is just as dumb a couple of weeks from now when the season starts!!!
Cool man, what awesome pics. Now try it with a bow in your hand. :biglaugh:
Holy Smokes !!
That is unbelievable. Very cool pictures.
Amazing! You should have stroked his beard to "count coup" while taking a pic with the other hand! Five feet from a LIVE wild turkey sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime stalk. Thanks for sharing the pics.
That's some good sneaking.
Thats great! Never seen anything quite like that with my own eyes or in pictures!
Those are some great pics Otto! 5 ft!???? Now that "puttin the sneak on"
that is awesome thanks for sharing.
You must have some Indian blood in you for that is some good sneaking!! Amazing pictures!
Wow..way to go! That tom must of been dreaming about this coming strut time with the ladies. Either that or he was deaf :knothead:
I doin't think it would have worked out if you was trying to shoot it.I have never seen wild turkey sleeping that close to the ground. That is really cool stuff.Good luck with your turkey season.
Good sneaking!!!
Thanks for sharing.
God bless,Mudd
That's some great picts. I have never seen anything like that or heard of anybody sneaking that close to a wild turkey, Great job. :clapper:
National Geographic cant do that.LOL. That is cool.
Great pics and very good stalking
Margly
Fantastic pics! I bet that's the LAST time that bird roosts less than about 60' off the ground!
Kinda looks like somebody already got him with one of those quilotines... :archer2:
Really cool. Thanks.
Talk about a RUDE awakening!
Not very many people can say they snuck up on a sleeping turkey...and even fewer can PROVE it!!!
I had a "Bronze" something or other, domestic turkey as a pet for several years. He was huge and looked like a seriously overweight wild turkey. He would flop his way up on anything he could and take a nap. His favorite was when I would leave the lawn tractor out. He would get in the seat and snooze. Even though he was not wild by any means, he was IMPOSSIBLE to sneak up on.
What you did was quite a feat!!! I am impressed!!! :notworthy:
Great pics, thanks for sharing.Too bad you didn't a pic of the look on his face when he saw you.
Thats realy cool. He looks like a big one .Good sneek job.
You must have had your bunny slippers on! Good job sneaking, and Thank You for the pictures.
STEALTH IS A GOOD SKILL TO HAVE!♠
that is amazing to bad you did not video tap the whole thing. thanks for sharing.
Wow! I can't believe you got that close. Hopefully you have that luck in a couple weeks. Looks like a mature bird as well.
I think you should have poked him.... =)
Wow! :notworthy: :notworthy: :clapper:
Too tired to fly up in the tree! He'll be sleeping lightly after that encounter! haha
That is way to awesome there!!! I hope you can get him during season to top it off!!! Something like that is almost more exciting than an actual hunt. Great job getting pics of it as well!
WOW AWESOME pic what are the chances of that????
Thats totally awesome!
Cool pics - thanks for sharing!
WAY TO GO Otto!

That's awesome!
After thinking about this a bit more today I bet Otto wasn't wearing a hat and that Tom was just hiding from the glare! I think blinding them's cheating!
Sorry Steve I couldn't resist, Good luck on them birds this spring.
Oh I had a hat on all right. It was frickin 33 degrees here....
Good stalking!

Too Funny, You should of yanked his beard.

I hear you there calling for snow here tonight! That will slow the gobbling down.
And just for the record me and otto have the same barber his name is Razor.
Excellent,The things you can do when you don't have a bow! GJ
He must have been sleepy from chasing the girls...
great stalk. great pics. that old bird must have been out drinking wild turkey last night.
Cool pics...bet that was a rush!
DIFFICULT,AND INCREDIBLE,,,BUT U DID IT,,,AND U HAVE THE PICS TO PROVE IT,,,,NICE,,,
Once about 5 years ago I was scouting a new farm b4 bow season and did almost the same thing! Nobody ever believed that I walked to within 10 yards of a sleepin gobbler on a log in the midday sun! But you my friend have the pics to back it up! Way to go! Still kind of surreal isn't it?
Awesome story, Awesome pics!!! I did a similar stalk on a sleeping red fox. I too got within 10 feet of him. Just kept a huge Beech tree between him and I as I approached.
thats cool!
About 18 years ago, I was riding on the back of a truck exploring new property to build a Hunting Plantation and sptted a couple of big toms in a green field. I had very little turkey knowledge at that time and didn't realize how amazing it was for me to be able to walk up on them.
I got out of the truck with my camera and took pictures as I walked in the wide open with no camo and just being quiet. I walked to within 15 yards of the two birds. We were all in the wide open, but these two guys were intent on whooopin each others arse.
Nice Pics Otto.
Bigjim
Wild Turkey? Thought you were a single malt man!
Nicely done Steve.
Must have had your Russell Mocccassin's on. What a memorable day to remember.
Great turkey!!
Great turkey!!
You must be part Indian to sneek up on a wise ole tom like that. Too bad it wasn't opening day or you would've scored big time with an amazing story to tell.
 Great pics! That' unreal!
I want to know what kind of shoes you were wearing!
Tell the truth Brother...you were snapping pictures with one hand and your fingers were wrapped around your Randall in your other hand. Man I sure could have used a back scratcher.
Way cool, those things happen just before the season.
Jake
Actually I had a .45 on my hip. They make BIG ole holes in a turkey!!!!
So I hear.......
That's cool!
Sad thing is I probably would have still missed him.
Awesome stalk though!
Josh
Josh, I think a blind man might have been able to shoot this turkey at a mere two feet.LOL
