I picked up my first recurve( Hoyt Dorado) about a month ago and I was wondering if its better to unstring it when Im done shooting it or leave it strung and hang it up? I shoot quite a bit....maybe 4 days a week and now that my indoor compound league is over for the year ,Ill be shooting the Dorado exclusively, getting ready for this fall. I was also wondering if performance/accuracy varies when the bow itself is broken down( limbs and riser taken apart)?Does it take a couple shots to settle the string or its good to go from the 1st shot ? Thanks for the info
I leave my longbow strung and hanging if I plan on shooting it during the week. If I take it in the car I unstring it.
Spike, modern bows made with glass (not all-natural or self bows) can be left strung basically forever. HOWEVER, no strung bow should be exposed to heat, like in a car or truck in the sun. They can explode. It's a good idea to break them down for transport for several reasons. This subject has been discussed numerous times here.
As far as putting it back together, yes, it might take a few shots for it to get back to where it was, because the string may "draw up" a bit. At least that's what I've experienced. Depends on the string material, too. If you make sure it doesn't untwist when you take the string off, you shouldn't have to readjust brace height when you reassemble it, once it's "shot in". Most of my experience has been with Flemish twist strings. Endless loop strings may be different, since they may not be twisted as much.
Leave it strung, even if you are transporting to and from a shooting spot or hunting. As said never leave it strung in direct sunlight or in the truckor car. I have had bows strung for years with no ill-effects. Selfbows and such are different animals! Shawn
Both of my recurves have been strung and stored horizontally in a bow rack in my home for the last 15 months.
LAST WEEK THERE WAS A THREAD ON THE SAME TOPIC,FOR THE MOST PART, EVERYONE THAT CHIMED SAID THEY LEAVE THERE RE BOWS STRUNG,,,,
Mine are left strung. I shoot every day though.
I've had a modern custom bow strung the better part of 15 yrs, and no "memory". I shoot just about every day. I will say that I do un-string my older Bears, but I don't shoot them on a regular basis.
My main bows stay strung and the TD bows stay assembled and strung unless they need to be transported in a pack for a trip.
Difficult to wrap my head around leaving a recurve or longbow strung longer than necessary. Yeah, I know modern bows are tough and can take a lickin' but I was brung up not to leave one strung so I rarely do.. Maybe in a hunting camp or at a weekend tournament.. but not at home..

Use the search feature and you will get hundreds of posts on this subject. Do what you want, but it ain't gonna hurt one bit to leave it strung and assembled all of the time.
As said above though remember that heat and strung bows in a vehicle are a bad combination. Does not even take a hot day, just a sunny one.
Thanks for all the info fellas....
Idk. I get nervous so I just unstring it when im down. Takes me like a second to do so ill just keep unstringing them
More bows have been damaged by stringing/unstringing than by leaving them strung, especially recurves. A twisted limb is not a pretty sight. A recurve should NEVER be strung or unstrung without a quality bow stringer, for the good of the bow and for safety. Folks have been hurt many times by a slip, including having eyes put out. Longbows can be strung/unstrung much more safely without a stringer, but caution is still in order.
I shoot my laminated glass longbows or recurves 4-5 times a week. Whatever bow that I'm shooting that period of time, I leave strung. No problems what-so-ever. When transporting the bow, I unstring it.
I have left my recurves strung for the last 4 years except when I need to change the strings or adjust the brace height.
If you shoot more than a few times during the week, leave them strung. Never leave strung in vehicle.
i have 100 recurves,at present i'm shooting 3...they are strung,the rest are not strung...
If your shootin em leave em strung. just my opinion
