Been shooting about 5 months and love it! I've worked on and learned lots of things including grip. Here's an issue I'm having. It seems like the better my grip - more or a straight grip like the experts teach on recurve - the more string slap I get. I never had a problem with compound or with my recurve or lb (both have recurve style medium wrist grips) until I changed my grip. I say "better" because I tend to shoot better the straighter (more inside) my grip is (unless it hits my arm).
Is this something many people have had a problem with or any tips? Looks like I will have to tweak my grip out. I also have an armguard, but having 1 in 10 shots result in stringslap is not acceptable.
Interesting.
If I'm getting string slap, it means my brace height is too low. That's me.
Not saying this is your problem, but try raising it on the HIGH side and see what happens.
If it stops, you have the answer. Then slowly bring the string back down til you find the SWEET SPOT. You will know when you found it. Then Measure it,remember it,or write it down.
Let us know how you made out......Philip
There are some pictures for a good grip on a "shooter's forum" thread called "grip question". Don't get your bow hand thumb knuckle too far around the bow grip. That knuckle should be just past the center line of the bow. Second, be sure that your bow arm elbow is rotated so the "boney point of the elbow" is pointed at the horizon behind you (NOT DOWN AT THE GROUND). Both these items will move your arm away from the string path.
My string hits my arm every shot off my long bows or self bows, has for 10-12 years with no ill effects. It doesnt smack hard, just tickles it some. I would take a little string slap over a bad grip anyday, thats just my opnion.
Thanks, I may try raising my brace height a bit and moving over a hair on the grip. Not sure about the elbow stuff because I've been using the same arm position for a while (it may be part of my dna :p ). Pearl Drums, I have some green and purple marks on my arm, but it's not really the pain (which if every now and then isn't a big deal), it's the noise and flinching (and the thought of wearing a thick jacket)!
Raise brace a bit and even with the grip you like slightly bend at the elbow. It will roll your forearm out of the way. I have huge forearms and it works for me. If ya can find the thread with Bowspirit and I harvesting rose shoots, ya can see a pic. of my form in there! Shawn
