Title: Wood Arrow Help Please
Post by: PastorSteveHill on March 19, 2011, 10:37:00 PM
Hey guys, I've never been into wood arrows much, except at one 3D shoot I had to shoot them for longbow class...  They were not really even spined to well, but I did ok with them.

Here is my set up...

Centaur bow 50 lbs. @ 30"   I pull 28.5 consistently.

So I'm assuming that would be about 46 lbs. at my draw, maybe 47.. these centaurs only gain 2 lbs per inch...

I would like my arrow to be 30" long
Weighting in at or under 500 grains.  125 gr. tip / feathers etc..

Could someone tell me about what spine would work and what wood arrow could I get that is of high quality, in spine consistency, and weight consistency and weight in at 500 or less grs...

I'm not asking much am I?    :D

Surewoods and I would say 70-75# spine if ya want 30" bop and 125 grain head. You may even want to go a tad higher. I have some shafts that need to be flecthed that are 77# spine and cut to 29.5"s bop. If ya want, send me your addy and I will send ya a couple and you can shoot them. I bet ya they fly darn good off that bow and than you have a great starting point. No charge of course, I will even pay shipping bud! Shawn

Thanks Shawn... I really appriciate it.... Guys like yourself make this place called Tradgang a real joy in this crazy world...

My buddy down the road has some 70-75's I just thought they'd be to stiff... I'll gather a couple from him and try em out...  Blessigns

Not out of that Centaur, they will not be stiff. I had one that was 52#s at my just shy of 29" draw and it shot those 77# spine perfect. Let us know how ya make out. Shawn

Why don't you use the dynamic spine calculator from Stu Miller? It works perfect for my longbow and wooden arrows...as for several others!

You can download it here:  http://www.heilakka.com/stumiller/

Hello Pastor Steve!    :wavey:   Shawn sounds about right. Out of my Mohawk Longbows which are 2-50#er's and 1- 49#er. I am shooting Tapered Sitka Spruce and Tapered Cedars that are 60/65 #'s. My arrows are cut 28/28 1/4"'s for my 27" draw. What I did was ordered a 3 arrow test kit from Suzanne St. Charles at North West Archery. 3 Rivers, Lost Nation, and others offer a 3 arrow test kit. This really narrows it down for you. That way you can see which arrows really fly best out of your specific bow.I hope I was some help.    :archer:      :archer2:

I don't think you will be able to get them to weigh in at or under 500 gr with point and feathers.  Probably more like 550 gr.

Weight wise I believe you can do it, ya have to find matched shafts that weigh 350 grains so when ya add feathers, dip, nock and 125 grain point you will be right near 500. 350 grains on a 75# spine shaft are tough but ya can finde them. 375-400 grains will be easier to find for sure. Shawn
