Was looking at a Greatree Mohegan. I measured his draw length at 19 1/2". Anyone know if you can just buy limbs when he outgrows the originals?
My 9yo shoots a Black Rhino Longbow M-54 25#@26".
Great kids bow.
Depends on how much you want to spend. If your budget allows it, try a bow from one of our many sponsors here and order a custom. If you want to go the VERY inexpensive route and still get a fine bow, then look online for an older recurve bow such as: Bear, Shakespeare, Darton, Proline, Browning, Wing, etc. in the 30 to 35 pound draw weight at 28 inches. This should be just about right for a 19" to 24" draw length. As the child grows, so too does his draw length and increased draw weight so he/she can shoot such a bow for several years to come. That's exactly what I have done for all three of my kids. They all have bows that are 34# or 35# at 28": one Browning, one Darton, and one Proline each for $115.00 down to $85.00. Also, I like to keep the AMO length at 58" or less.
You can try out a Maddog Pup from Maddog Archery. Mike will hook you up with what you need, give him a shout! My boy has been shootin a Pup for a couple weeks and he is loving it.
MADDOG, give Mike a call
Maddog
maddog !
Maddog all the way...
I have one order for my 6 year old girl...
My kids shoot Black rhino,as they grow you can exchange the bow for a bigger one and get a % refund.
I would keep the bow under 30# for a nine year old unless he or she is a strong kid. My 8 year old does fine with 15# but am moving him up to 22#. Better to get form first and worry about poundage later. You can get new limbs for Greatree but weight depends on riser bought as they will only excet up to a certain ammount on the youth riser. I would go with Maddog or used route.
Thanks everyones for info. He wants to shoot carp out of a canoe like the kid on the old Fred Bear video.
There are others to try out there too. ELk Ridge Archery and St. Joe River Bows, both have trade in policies. My son is on Elk Ridge Bow number two and I was impressed with the St. Joe River kids bows I saw in Waterloo.
From what I am now reading, youth simply cannot learn to hunt without a crossbow. :)
9 year olds, don't require much when it comes to fun. Buy a fiberglass Li'l Sioux and let the archery begin.
Mike Rash at Legends Bows makes a great kids bow.
maddog all the way.
Another vote for a maddog, mike makes an excellant bow.
Black Rhino makes one of the best I have seen, and shot.
Maddog is a great choice, but you could look at Greattree or another T/D that way as you said you could buy limbs as you go. 3Rivers has some good T/D kids bows as well and again up #age as the kid grows! Shawn
my vote for maddog too well made bow
I've seen that kid shoot, he is a "Natural"
Why I've seen him shoot the eye out of a runnin skunk at 50yds. with a willow stick and an old shoestring! Just like his Dad!
Get him somethin NICE!

These are all great bows. Dave Windauer from Schafer Silvertip makes a kids longbow too. Worth looking at in your quest. Affordable too.
I would go with Black Rhino. They make a good bow at reasonable price and have a trade in policy as ti-guy stated. I have used them in the past and would reccomend them. Another plus is they are well stocked and their is very little wait time.
