Hi,
i am looking for a cheap broadhead target. If possible i like selfmade stuff, so tell me how ic ould make one if you know how to, please.
Should be big enough for broadhead planing while tuning.
My only guess so far would be a bale of hay but thats very hard to transport.

Go to a tractor supply and ask them if you can have the foam blocks that they ship the trailors with. Ours gives them to us for free and we get as many as we want.
Go to local marinas and look for large blocks of styrofoam...look on banks down wind of marinas..plenty of materal...good to get out of waterways...
Hay bales don't work well with broadheads in my experience. I destroyed a set of Muzzy glue-ons that way, and quit using them because the aluminum ferrules didn't hold up. I second arky's suggestion on salvaging styrofoam blocks from lakes and rivers where they've escaped from docks. Biggest problem I've had using them is the thick blocks will hold your arrows so tightly that you can hardly get them out. I cut mine down in thickness with an old cross-cut saw blade. Very messy when the beads start coming out, so putting the target in a bag of some sort is a good idea.
For field points, it's hard to beat a cardboard box stuffed full of sheet plastic left over from a construction project.
i like a cardbord box filled with old shirts, rags, blankets, whatever you got. you have to use a old bh that is NOT sharp and the cloth will stop it every time. i use screw on's so if a bh gets tangled up i can just open the box and unscrew it to get my arrow out. no problem with firld points. when the box is shot up recycle it and find a new box to put your rags in and the cycle continues....
I use rotted stumps.
Build a mound of dirt. Is that cheaper than rotten stums. Well, easier to find.

A sand box is good. I've seen some great plans for them.

This can be as cheap as you want. I put $100 into this one. It's definitely cost effective as it will never wear out. It's not going anywhere without some serious effort, that's for sure.

cant beat a box size of your choice filled with old rags, shirts, blankets etc just whach out for buttons
A while back, our IT (computer) department bought a bunch of new PCs at work. I got all of the ethafoam that came with them. The individual pieces in each box all fit together like a puzzle, and I put them all together in layers. Then I wrapped them with pallet wrap -- like Saran Wrap for the kitchen -- and I've got two great, lightweight targets that weigh just a couple of pounds each. They are both the size of a hay bale.
Everyone thought I was nuts carrying out all that foam from work, but I saved a couple hundred bucks, probably. The foam is great for field points, broadheads cut it up pretty good, though. I can always wrap it with more plastic wrap when it gets lots of holes in it, but eventually it will wear out.
I a big fan of using a large cardboard box full of plastic grocery bags or plastic wrap from a warehouse.
It took me a while to save up the grocery bags but it was worth it.
Pack the box fairly tight. Doesn't have to be rock hard. Just tight. And every once in a while mix the bags up to redistribute the bags as they get shot up.
One warning. Don't leave this type of target outdoors. The box will deteriorate and if a windstorm pics up you will have a mess on your hands. This i found out from experience. One way to help alleviate this type of mess is you put all the grocery bags in a large trash bag. Then the trash bag into the cardboard box. It will keep the plastic grocery bags contained.
As you shoot up the cardboard box you can turn it to different sides or patch it with scraps of cardboard duct taped to the main box.

I use styrofoam myself. It doesn't dull the broadheads and it's cheap. It will take lots of hits before it gets shot up.
Even old moldy chunks that have been floating around in a lake for a couple of years will still stop a broadhead quite nicely.
You can also get one of those El Cheapos with the target face on them from Walmart for about $20 bucks, they will last a good long while.
Been using my neighbors pond levy.
I had a sand box me too and it will last forever.The only problem is that it sands the finish on the shafts and BH.It worths the time to build it!Other than that I stuff plastic and old broken target inside big bags and I design a deer/hog siluette with a magic marker.I have spent $10 in 2 years,everyday shooting.

will try the styrofoam as i got no place of my own to shoot outside, so it needs to be transportable.
I use the seattle metro yellow pages, centered around strechwrap stuffed in a burlap sack. Have 5 and they seem to take a good beating. Some great ideas in here. Thanks for sharing.
