Title: Question: Flemish Twist or Continuous loop on the longbow?
Post by: Javi on March 13, 2011, 12:45:00 PM
After a fifteen year hiatus for competitive compound archery I'm back into traditional archery with a longbow, so much has change that I'm having to ask questions about the discipline.

I've made my own strings for many years and have the necessary jigs and the skills to make both the Flemish Twist and the Continuous Loop strings, so my question is which do you prefer on the longbow?

I think the Flemish Twist is a bit more traditional but the Continuous Loop is a bit stronger so I'm torn between the two choices.

What say you...???

A flemish twist on a longbow can be quieter then a endless loop. Most of my endless loop strings I make for my bows are dacron.I use these on a couple of older vintage recurves.I made a couple of endless low stretch strings for a couple of longbows, they did seem louder. It can be more of a personal preference. You can more easily adjust brace height with a flemish twist.I make both for my bows but just prefer a flemish twist low stretch string for my longbows and endless dacron on my older recurves.

I don't think that a continuous loop is necessarily stronger. Many say that the Flemish is, but I think the strength issue is immaterial anyway given the tensile strength of modern materials (including dacron).

Mike good to see ya over here from Archery Talk.
I seem to have my best luck with flemish twist on recurves and endless loops on longbows. Flemish seems quiter on recurves. I use B55 and it works very well.
You taught me so much over the years on compounds, THANKS

it ... just ... doesn't ... matter.

pick whatever bowstring type aesthetically works best for ya.

however, imo, what does matter is the fiber used.  if yer bow can handle hmpe (dyneema, vectran, spectra, etc), that fiber type will be much more consistent than polyester (dacron)

I like the looks of a good flemish string. Mainly because my 16 year old makes them for me.

Hey Chuck, good to see you... And it's good to be back in traditional after so long..  I got rid of all my compounds. I always said that when compounds were no fun to shoot, I'd go back to trad and that time has come..

I've used both on my longbows and as already stated don't see any difference between them.

To many twist will slow a bow down. What ever we us it should be short enough without over twisten

Personally prefer flemish on LB and endless on recurve.

It's doesn't seem to matter too much.  Just decide which one you like.

I'm having fun figuiring out how to make multi-color flemish.  Two color is easy, but 3 color is a little more cumbersome.  It's just my lack of dexterity.

One real advantage of flemish is more padding at the string nocks.  But if you need that, you can easily add padding to an endless.

I personally like the look of the flemish and try to blend the multi colors with the bow. To me it just look good. Your Choice!

You don't have to make every strand of each bundle all one color.  If you make a 2 bundle 14 strand string, just use 2 or 3 colors to make the seven strands in the bundle.  You still get the 3 colors and I like it better than solid color bundles.

Maybe that was taken harshly.

Point is this subject has been rolled over many times.

This site has a search function that is very useful.
Many questions have already been answered and a quick search will will answer them for you...and you don't have to wait for replies.

If you don't like the tradgang search try an advanced google search of tradgang.com only (what I prefer)

Thanks for the lesson, young fellow.. I'll be sure and check before I post any further questions I might have...

Or maybe I'll just stick to looking at the nice bows and ask my questions elsewhere..

The search feature is OK but it's nice to have your own thread going to get a specific question answered. I myself have only had endless loop on a recurve but i would think they would work fine on a longbow. Glad your back shooting trad, welcome to our camp   :campfire:

If we all used the search function for every question or topic we wanted to discuss there wouldn't be much going on around here now would there?
Also would be a possibility of missing a new maybe eye opening opinion.

Just sayin.

Yeah the Search is nice but sometimes info or opinions have changed. Sometimes a considerate individual will hook you up with a link just to get you there and as stated above its always fun to create your own thread and see what comes. I have only been here a few years and only recently acquired enough time to educate myself a bit more on what they have to offer at this site. Keep asking your questions. Your not the only one!

Myself I just like the 2 color Flemish strings, on both my longbows and recurves. Just seems to set them off.
