As a couple of old (65 and 67) trad-totin :archer2: (1 recurve and 1 longbow) lifelong bowhunters from Montana, we decided this year we would like to try a hunt in the midwest, as winter has been very tough on our spots here in MT :( .
We need to put in for the KS drawing soon but have no land to hunt or contacts for that matter, so if any of you are willing to help orient us to units we could find some places to hunt it would be appreciated. A personal message might be best.
Excuse the idiot questions: We thought perhaps central KS may be further away from cities and have less pressure? As outsiders, can you knock on doors and find land with decent hunting? Are most of the deer in stream bottoms or is there good hunting in the bare uplands associated with crops?
Are you lookin for guided hunt or priv. land to hunt.
Your best to have a plan. Knocking on doors worked years ago; but like anywhere else, it's become tougher. I would look at some of the walk-in areas--I've taken nice deer off of public land near the El Dorado Lake.
I would call the kansas dept wildlife and parks and see if they could mail you a map of the walk in hunting areas. There are a ton on the western half of the state, along with some public hunting ground.

Walk in areas are the way to go. Now day's most land owners have either leased thir property to hunt clubs, or just simply don't want any trespassing on their property. Like stated above it's tougher.
I've been thinking about trying Kansas myself. From what I have heard and read it sounds like there is some great hunting on many properties enrolled in the Walk In Hunting Area program.
There was just a very good article in the April/May 2011 Traditional Bowhunter issue. In the article it mentions nearly a half million acres enrolled in the program. I know people that have hunted some of it, and they have reported excellent hunting.
Yep,It is some of the best hunting. I hunted on some walk in property in the 2010 seas. and scouted at least 3 160 180 class whitetail, but when te seas opened never saw a one of them.
I've hunted Kansas the last 3 years, mostly on private property. I pay a trespass fee and get to hunt the property, nothing furnished but hunting rights. Have done very well, I have also did some looking on public land, found a couple of interesting spots. PM me if interested. RW
Over the past two years, I've been looking at getting into bow hunting. As I run into people that hunt I ask about where they go, etc. I've been rather surprised as to how many people here around Wichita bowhunt. I've heard nothing but glowing reports about the state owned land up by El Dorado lake and down just south of Arkansas City. There's also a considerable amount of walk in areas around here. There's a map of the walk in areas on the Kansas Fish and Game website.
I've been hunting all over this state and it allways amazes me how good the hunting is either on walkin or private ground I sent ya a pm also take care jake
