Tomorrow Chis and I are headed out to harvest some Multi-Flora rose for some primitive shafts. Gonna make an afternoon of it shooting our bows(light bow for me)and looking for some nice straight shoots for shafts! Should be fun, gonna grab some extra so if anyone wants to try a few let me know, I can ship them out to ya for cost of shipping!! Shawn
Shawn,
where the heck are you gonna find any Multi-Flora rose bushes? :readit:
With all the rain we had today, you should keep an eye out for Shed antlers too.
Have fun Guys.! If you find my pruners let me know.
I am sure I dont have to tell you guys this but wear welding gloves and actually to get into the center of a good M Rose ya might want a welders apron, chaps and hood.... LOL
We just use Tordon or a heavy solution of CrossBow on em out here and then shread em with a heavy brush cutter....
Really looking forward to it , Shawn. I love rose arrows. They're heavy and durable, just never been able to find a large enough source around my home. I think Shawn'll have that covered. I like to think of it as getting back at all those throns during the JLMBH. Can't wait buddy...
Have fun Chris! Any time spent with Shawn has gotta be a blast!
... mike ...
*** PS... I'd have a very special place to display an arrow with thorns along it's shaft. ;) Ya Think? ***
Make sure you cut them plenty thick...... they shrink like a SOB.
Also, leave them long. Then, just slide then back and forth on your spine tester until they're where you want them. Use the taper to make the spine you want.
Keith,
I know...that shrinking factor has really bit me in the butt on many occassions. I need the base to be at least somewhere between 7/16" to 1/2" for them to make servicable shafts for my 60 pound bows.
Just to let everyone know how heavy they are, I've got two shafts I'm turning into arrows right now. As luck would have it, they turned out weighing the EXACT same. 635 grains for a 31 inch shaft. Now that's hefty...
Yup, we will do fine, got plenty to choose from and I know of some heavy stuff. Can anyone say Briarback?? Shawn
If you need some I know where there about two acres of it. You'll likely have to peel a few years worth of my hide off it from where I've been bunny hunting.
Charlie, You have never been to Shawn's :readit:
Although it sounds like your place is nice too. ;)
Shawn,
Do you need a light weight bow to use tomorrow?
Shawn & Chris,
Have a blast & try not to leave a red trail in the snow.
Have fun guys!

Oh yeah, I'm loosing some pints on this one. Worth it... :bigsmyl:
The best shoots are in the center of the bush :bigsmyl:
Shawn, you ever try vibernum?Noticed you have a lot of that around, too.
Although I have never harvested or made any Rose arrows myself I was fortunate enough to have friend & TG member Ted Fry give me a Rose arrow he made with Stone head he knapped and I was lucky enough to arrow a P&Y Black Bear with it,arrow it still intact !! It flew great out of my self-bow.Need to make some of them myself sometime !!
Have fun guys on the Rose Bush collection.
Good to see you back up and heading out Shaun. Also good to see ya back posting again. Have a good time. I think we are heading out to look for some sheds. I'll inadvertantly be in some multi-flora myself! Good luck.
We won't get all that bloody!! We will cut our way and in and out!! Gonna try in rabbit valley first and see what we find in there. Plenty around here, I mean hundreds of acres in over 4 spots that I hunt. We hopefully find the stuff Chris needs, I have never tried it myself! Shawn
Well,we are back and hardly drew any blood!! Chris and I had a great time and we shot some and even got a few pics. Turned out we ended up with 4 dozen shafts and could of been a lot more! Nice day to be in the woods and I survived!! Shawn
Heck, our fearless leader isn't just surviving, he seems to be thriving. If he's hurtin', I'm just not seeing it...

This was a photo of Shawn after he set some balloons up along the rabbit valley and we shot our way back. Good times. Heck, he has major surgery and I still can't outshoot him...

Let's just say we are well-stocked on shafts. Shawn only took a dozen or so, so I've got a lot of work ahead of me for the next few weeks...
Like Shawn said, We were being selective. Could have been a lot more in that bunch. Plus, we only hit the rabbit valley. I'm sure we'd have been packing 'em out on our backs if we'd headed over to Briarback mountain...
Parting shot, thanks again Cindy for taking this.

Shawn, thanks again bro. Got enough shafting to last a while. It was great to see you out and about, too. Anytime you wanna do it again, I am there. I live waaaaaaay to close to ya' to just meet up for the JLMBH...
i think i know which type of bush ur talkin bout but around here ive seen so many types of bushes thatll poke ya i dont know exactly which on yall get ur shafts from. if someone could be kind enough to post a pic of a plant that has them id appreciate it. i have plenty of thorn bushes around me its just figuring out which ones to tangle with is where im having trouble.
thanks,
steven
Multi-flora rose, Chris had a pic. Don't let him kid ya he shot very well. He has come a long way since I first met him!! I had a great time and yes we will be meeting up again real soon. We have to get his lil' bro a turkey or better yet the two of them a turkey!! I feel better than I look in that last pic.! (lol!!) Thanks for the pics. bud!! Shawn
I think this one somebody took of briarback mountain is a much better shot of multiflora rose (wild rose).
Some serious talons on that stuff...
thanks for the pic. we got tons of that suff al around me. we end up mowin over it every year with the brush hog so i gess ill have to cut a few before i brush hog. is there a cirtin time of year thats best to pick them?
steven
My guess is mid to late april when the fresh stuff has been growing a while. I am waitin to see how the shafts come out! Chris ya got one of the stuff we cut? Shawn
I just check...looked like I didn't get a picture of any of the actual bushes. Should've done that...
BTW, Shawn, if you get any that smell like a cross between apples & wintergreen when ya' peel 'em, that's that dogwood we cut. Between that and the lack of thorns, another way to tell the difference is that the dogwood bark really clings to a blade when you're removing it. Really a wet & gummy bark...
I have some really long and straight rose bushes in the back yard needing trimming. I'll cut them Chris if you tell me what to do next. I have to cut them anyway.
Looks like you guys had fun. I was gonna go stump shooting ended up seeing about 30 deer and tracking my lost dog several miles before I finally found him Lost scared and shivering. We are one happy family again.
Did ya guys happen to find my pruners? :dunno:
That's a beautiful bow, Shawn, and the pic shows that you are using every inch of curl it can give you.
Nice of you two to go out and prune the roses. It really encourages future growth! :D
Killdeer
Good times fellas!
Shawn Leonard-aka-"The Incredible Shrinking Man"
Great to see you guys yesterday. Cade is still talking about the "Shawn stories"
Good deal guys.
Never thought about the shrinkage. Will have to remember that next I'm collecting.
Yup, we had a good time and yes Kathy I draw her 29"s but it is smooth to 30 and only a 54"er. Love my Arroyo!! We figured we can always use more wild rose, bunnies need love too! :smileystooges: :bigsmyl: Shawn
Harvest MF Rose? Heck, I kill it! There is a reason I call it MF! Besides, MFR is an invasive exotic plant in the US. So it is not as primative as we might think, but an import from the Orient, likely by "European Americans." I am quite sure that the indigenous peoples of North America did not use it! But, if it makes good arrows, knock yourself out. Me, I'll still Round-up it!
Hugh
Shawn,
Glad to see you up & shooting. Get that form back before the Muzzy. I want a rematch after that 8-0 stomping you gave me a year& a half ago. Chris is a great guy & good for you two getting out there and enjoying the day.
Dan

That stuff has the ability to reach out and grab you and nearly pull you off a tractor seat. One of the invasive plants I love to hate along with kudzu,Japanese knotweed, nodding thistle, etc.I think at one time that multiflora rose was planted to use as a fence by early settlers.I can understand why as I dont see how anything gets through it.
Junglecat, that is how we got it around here. A farmer by the name of Mead planted it as a natural fence in the mid 1800s and the birds spread it all over. We believe that is why we have so many bunnies, nothin(fox, hawks, yotes)can get thru it and it provides them bunnies great cover! Shawn
As a positive side effect; Shawn can go through every spring and collect all the tattered clothing hanging from the Rose bushes left behind by February bunny hunters and make a quilt. :dunno:
Charlie, I think you need some :help: ..... See Ya Soon!
... mike ...
ttt for Shawn.
Hey Shawn,
After a few straightening sessions, about 5 culled shoots, and a few glasses of liquid courage to help stay focused on the task, these are my last bundle.
They are actually the WORST of the shafts we gathered. Those with the most character. Still have a ways to go, but still, these are certainly getting there. Amazing what a little heat and pressure will do...
I hope every arrow you guys get out of this trip ends up bringing down meat for you.
I am convinced that you deserve it, as I am also convinced that they have already drawn some blood from each of you...lol
Be sure to show us the finished product.
God bless,Mudd
That's cool Chris
Might have to try some for my self bow...
You guys find any arrows?? :archer2:
Mudd,
Most of these shafts'll wind up being used for small game and stumps. Don't wanna think about how many carbons and surewoods I went through last year shooting at frogs, squirrels, and stumps. But I am setting some aside for some knapped heads...
Curt,
I keep thinking how cool would it be for someone to take a Selkirk bunny with a Selkirk arrow? And yeah, We found a Heritage arrow in decent shape. Can't imagine how many arrows still litter the area...
Very cool Chris..Can't wait to see them when there done...
I've got about 20 acres of MFR behind the house. You can come get all the shafts you want as long as you cut the rest of the stuff down!
Miserable plant. At least you guys can find some "good" in it.
As Chris said we found one arrow! I believe it to be Jeff Williams arrow! Right where he killed his bunny and about 40 shots were taken. Chris they look awfully good ecsp. for the worst of the bunch!! Had a blast bud!! Shawn
Thanks Shawn. I, too, had a great time.
This is what the finished product'll look exactly like in a month or so. Team Pink Primitive...
Shawn,if it's 4 fletch(2yellow/2barred)it's mine and you can have it...you use the same shafts.I missed a runner with that.
Been enjoying this thread...cool to see something as miserable, and blood-letting,as MF rose turned into arrows...that can cause even more bleeding.Oh,and you can just call me Jeff. :^)
Jeff, I saw you lose that one ;)
Y'all need to come down here to my place, you can have all of that hateful, obnoxious stuff you want! Take it all home with ya! :knothead:
Jeff, yes I knew it was yours! I will see ya at Mikeys and bring it!! Semp, we have tons and tons of it! Makes the best rabbi-tat there is!! Shawn
NICEEEEE,
Chris - sometime you'll have to show me your straightening method.
John,
Nothing special, really. Keen eye, steady hand, and a lot of patience. That, and as many have said, bundling is the key. I like to bundle 'em up with a big dowel or broken broom handle. Gives em something to work towards.
I will say though that I am experiment with heating the worst bends and then using a vice to straighten them. Seems to be working quite well...
I cut some Cane last fall to see how it would work for shafts. Everything that I read says that you need to use heat to straighten. I have not used heat before and I thought that you were using heat. Let me know what you find out with the heating experiments.
Thanks - John
John,
Cane is an enitrely different material. Heat seems to be the only thing that gets cane straight. But rose and dogwood shafts go through a stage where they seem almost plastic. Very easy to flex and bend by hand alone during the few weeks after cutting. Makes it real easy to work with.
Yup, I do not work with it, but bundled it up to ship and I put a couple good straight shafts in with it and tied it every 4 inches or so. Looks pretty straight. I am shipping it it Arkansas in a few minutes!! Hopefully I get to see some shafts made from itm in the near future. I sent a bunch to the "ferret" Mickey Lotz some years ago and he got shafts that spined 30#s all the way up to right near 50#s, most seemed it the low to mid 40's! Shawn
hummmmm.
Saw this again and was hoping Chris(bowspirit)maybe posted an update on his shafts. They were lookin good bro! Shawn
Just looking at the pictures of the cut rose shafts and the patch of multa floral rose, and the cut ones all seem to be redish in color, but the patch all seems to be green? Or am I just color blind?
Shawn, looks like you and Chris had a good time. Glad to see you are up and about. Sorry Pete and I haven't made it up, work has kept both of us very busy. Hope to have time to see you soon, you look great. Please tell Cindy we said hi. Let us know how the shafts come out.
