Title: Bein laid up stinks
Post by: nc recurveman on March 11, 2011, 02:45:00 AM
I am going freakin nuts, thankfully I worked some trades to have some arrows to work on next week. My wife said I looked pittiful sittin on the couch holding a bow, she said it was the saddest thing she'd ever seen lol. Anyone do any flint knapping within 2-3 hours of the outer banks I been meaning to learn that anyway. For those of you who've been laid up in the past, how did ya'll pass the time, any advise?

I've been laid up off and on, it's not fun.  I spent most of my time trying to plan the best way to get to the bathroom and back.

Laid up is natures way of telling us to chill out. Just enjoy the rest and it will seem better.

Pick a thread or two to play with on here every day and you will be surprised what you know at the end of the week.

I don't watch TV so that was not an option.

Spent much more time on TG.

Developed some enhanced arrow designs.

Developed several hunting strategies

Revisited shooting form basics

Sharpened BH's

Prayed

Dreamed of better days

Wrote my friends

Cleaned my calls (~200)

Dreamed of better days

Cleve, I broke my right hand last fall right after hunting season (luckily).  Almost three months of rotting. Oiled a lot of leather, watched Jerimiah Johnson 500 times, sharpened knives and broadheads etc. Pretty limited since I'm right handed.
But gave me lots of time to think what I WANT to do and make plans. Hang in there, you'll be back before you know it.

Me, I practice calling (Elk, Deer, Predators). No one else home really helps. Read a lot and plan different hunts. Good luck, it gets better.

I am laid up right now, just had neuro-surgery. It is lousy, I am making arrows, shooting my handguns and taking lots of rides. It has been 10 days and I am going buggy, I have a new bow coming and may get permission to shoot in a week or so, so like said above, it will get better. Shawn

Try living alone on restrictions!   :knothead:

I can get around, and blessed after back surgery to be able to sit at a desk and work from home.

On the other hand, can't bend, twist or life more than a quart of milk. Oven's too low to bake a cake!

Can't drive so I wait on people to come to take me anywhere.

And my dad is in a temporary recovery at the nursing home where he was on death's door a month ago, and I can't get to see him!  :(

So yeah, it's always in life a balance of mixed blessings and challenges!

Blessed to be up and walking around so quickly.

Challenged to be cooped up in Yankee late winter and unable to do squat!

I'm hoping by the time I can draw a bow again, I'll have forgotten all my bad habits and can start over learning good ones!  :)

I'm sorry your having to go through this valley Cleve.

I would suggest that every time you feel like you want to shoot your bow, tell your wife how much you love her, give her a pat, take her hand, give her a hug.

It may help in getting time to pass a little quicker, it could even take your mind elsewhere and give you some cardio exercise...lol

Got you in my prayers friend/brother.

God bless,Mudd

I was laid up after surgery back in the fall.  Missed most of bow season.  A few things I did to pass the time:

Read a few books, and re-read TBM issues.
Spent some time here on TG.
Prayed.
Became a better friend to my dog.
Learned to hate our parrot.
Watched some DVD's of movies I hadn't seen in years.
Prayed some more.
Learned to appreciate just being around my wife and kids.

Now I'm just thankful for every day I'm given and try to make the most of them.

Hopefully this period in your life will pass quickly and you will soon be back to doing the things that make you happy.

God Bless.

A word of caution!!

Flint knapping can get very strenuous.

Both pressure flaking and percussion flaking can and will call on the use of those abdominal muscles.

Follow the dr's orders and only do what they approve.

Get well soon!

God bless,Mudd

Check you Neil's story of his mountain goat hunt on the Bear's Paw bows site if you are a Jeremiah Johnson fan. You will find it very interesting.

Quadurple bypass surgery in 2007 and torn elbow tendon surgery in 2008. I know about layed up. You'll get through it. After the tendon tear I thought I'd never shoot a bow again. I was wrong.
