Title: aerial shots
Post by: wykid on March 09, 2011, 07:59:00 PM
I am trying to practice my aerial shooting.  I don't always have someone to throw a disk for me.  Do any of you have any self made devices you use to launch targets?  Thanks.

I haven't done it yet, but take an old, cheap clay bird thrower. Modify the throwing arm with a deeper & wider "C" channel to accomodate your foam disk targets.  Break off the thrower's dirt spikes and bolt the thrower verically on some type of open-topped, wooden box. Make the lower bolt hole adjustable for angle of throw.  Add a longer "PULL!!!" rope.  Add 2 garden-cart or small push mower wheels to the box.  Use the box to store your foam targets. Add an old lawnmower handle bar.  Roll everything  to the site and have fun with a red-neck aerial thrower.    :D

Helium balloons and some kite string ( and a 6-8 oz fishing weight for an anchor)just use longer pieces of string to get the balloons higher in the air.You can have them at all different height's and the wind will make them move in crazy directions.Place them out in a field in different areas and walk through like a shooting course.Very cheap.

Use a gallon milk jug attached to a fishing rod and reel.  Then use judos and you don't have to mess with fluflus.

This is a standard clay pigeon thrower. The target is 2" thick Styrofoam insulation with one side trimmed down to fit into the slot where the clay pigeon would go. It is a fairly snug fit. I have about 50' of rope on it with a loop in the end. Put my foot thru the loop to throw the disc. Works pretty well. The target will start out kind of flat but once it gets out a ways it will turn up so you have the whole disc to shoot at.

boy have I ever got some ideas now.  I just agreed to buy a target thrower off of Craig's list.  Thanks for all the ideas.

Here is a link to another thread. A very fine man, Jason, built a thrower that worked very well. There is a picture of it in this link.

I use myself when I haven't got anyone around to throw it for me . . . makes for a much more challenging shot because you only see the side of the disk instead of a 8 inch circle!
