Title: both finishes being satin do you prefer smooth or textured finish?
Post by: zipper bowss on March 08, 2011, 07:48:00 AM
I have been useing a textured finish on our Hunter model bows.I realy like this textured finish, and think it is the way to go for a hunting bow.Since every bow I build is intended to be a hunting bow.I am thinking of spraying them all with the textured finish. So,the question is do you prefer textured finish or smooth?

My textured finish bows eventually become smooth where my hand fits the grip.I've also had too much matte texture(IMO) finish on bows. Some woods(curly maple) you loose alot of the grain w/ a textured finish.I'm kinda on the fence Bill w/ this one.

I feel more comfortable with a textured grip, esp if I'm wearing gloves.

I like a textured finish like on the Mohawk bows Not sure of the name of the finish. I'm interested in the Hunter model going to have some at Baltimore? around 50#s.

Looks like I am in the vast minority here but I say smooth and gloss, even for hunting.

Bill,
Have you sprayed any of your arrow inlay limbs with the textured finish? Just wondering if you lose any of the detail under the textured finish?

Thanks, Bill

Maybe you could give the customer the option.  Course, I'm not a bowyer and don't know how much of a hassle that may be to keep up with.

Oh, I voted for a smooth finish.  Seems I'm in the minority though but if the deer or whatever sees the smooth finish on my bow, it should have been shot already.

I like the textured or matted as BW calls it.

If you go all matted, which would be good for ease of production,  you might want to let customers special order a smoth finsh if they like that. Just my 2 cents

I like a smooth shiney finish.

I do about 90% of my hunting spot and stalk, out in the sun, in the wide open, and have never been busted because of a shiney bow.

Do Pro Staff votes count extra? I think you should stick with texture on the Hunter model and make it an "option" on the other models. Smooth finish accentuates the wood grain, don't hide the part that makes your bows special!

This bow has a textured finish and it does not hide any of the beauty Mike.

I stand corrected, but think how much NICER that wood would chuck if it was a smooth finish.

Im more then a little surprised by the results of the poll so far.I fully expected the smooth finish to be much more popular then it is.

Smooth finish will always be an option. However, it looks like the standard finish for our bows should be the textured.

The textured finish is actually an extra step. The finish under the texture is in fact smooth. If it is not, then the finish job looks half a$$.As Danny pointed out a textured finish done right does not have to hide the beauty of wood.If it did,I would not even consider it.

Thank you all for helping.
Bill

10X I do plan to have a couple of hunter models at Baltimore.

I like the look of a textured or flat finish bows myself. Never have liked shiney or glossy bows.

MAYBE, LEAVE IT AS AN OPEN CUSTOM OPTION FOR THE CLIENT TO CHOOSE ,IF IT'S NOT SUCH A ISSUE FOR THE BOWYER...

I like a smooth but matte or saten finnish as it shows off the bowyers skill and wood beauty. I've also seen some pretty heavy textured finnishes that still couldnt hide the sloppy sanding marks underneath.

I also like a smooth or matte finish, but wouldn't shy away at all from a textured finish if the bow felt good in the hand and shot well for me.

I am with pops on this one. I really like that matte finish as well. Shedrock might make fun of me for this though  :archer2:  but that is because he has a Zebra wood bow that is amazing.

Both finishes will be a satin or dull finish.I guess it just depends on who you talk to as to if its called dull or satin.

Oh Lord Bill, you just doubled the change orders! lol.  I have often wondered this myself. I personally go back and forth. I have noticed that a textured finish seems to look better  for longer and doesn't show the fingerprints or wax as much.

Bill, do you have a pic of each where you can see the difference? Now you've got me thinking about how I want that bow finished...

Being a bowhunter I am more concerned about  being seen than oogling my bows. I prefer a really flat, non reflective type of finish. On my property the deer bedding area is west of where we have to set up. The sun shines directly on us so any sheen to out equipment at all has caused problems.

I like the textured finish on Jims bows it doesn't hide the wood no glare and wears like iron.
