Title: 175 gr. Heads and Spine
Post by: Wyostikbo on March 07, 2011, 10:45:00 PM
When you go from a 125 gr. to 175 gr. broadhead do you go up in spine weight? I'm shooting 30" PO cedars 23/64" tapered 5/16" nock. I'm just fishing for some of your guys experiences.
Thanks,
Brent

Going to a heavier head, weakens the dynamic spine of the shaft.25 grs of point weight equals roughly 5# of spine.A ballpark guess would be you would need shafts spined 10# heavier, that is,if your current setup is truly tuned for proper arrow flight to begin with.

The easy answer would be ,yes.  50grns is quite a jump but it will depend on your set up. If for instance you are shooting a 30" arrow but only draw 27" you might be able to just shorten your arrow. But if you only have an inch to play with in arrow length you will most likely need a higher spine arrow. Give some details of what your setup is and I am sure someone will be able to give you a good starting point.
