JUST WATCHED ESSENTIAL ENCOUNTERS AND BARRY AFTER DRAGING OUT A DEER MADE A STATEMENT NOT BAD FOR A 65 YEAR OLD MAN AND I GOT TO THINKING I AM IN MY MID 50'S AND WAS WONDERING HOW LONG I COULD LOOK FORWARD TO DOING THIS BOW HUNTING THING THAT I LOVE SO MUCH. SO MY QUESTION TO ALL IS HOW OLD ARE YOU AND WHAT ANIMALS DO YOU HUNT. DO YOU STILL GO INTO REMOTE AREAS ON FOOT. ALSO WHAT DO YOU DO TO KEEP IN SHAPE TO ALLOW YOURSELF TO KEEP DOING YOUR HUNTS / CAMPING.
THANKS TO ALL ! :)

I am only 46 and plan on hunting and dragging out my deer in to my 80's! I have a bud who is 78 and still shoots 68#s and hunts Colorado,Illinois and NY every year and his hunts in Colorado are very remote and he packs in and out on foot unless he shoots an elk than he goes gets horses. Shawn
-
I am 54 and still hunt , I have friends who are well into their 60's and hunt much more than me....we rarely go by our selves any more due to the "possibilities", but other wise we're hangin' in there.....
-
I am 61 , hunt deer and moose mostly in the bush and open farm land in East Central Alberta. I walk for a couple of miles each day up and down Range Road, and exercise each day push ups and such. Of course there are chores around the yard. My shop(old barn) is 100 yards from the house , many trips back and forth a day. I do all things around the yard(exercise) based on my hunting ! Hopefully for many years to come!

I'm only 55 and I love getting into the back country alone. I don't like dragging game very far, though, so I keep a pack frame handy. I walk about 15 miles a week and lift weights to keep in shape.
:bigsmyl:
-
I know of guys who hunt in their nineties and personally know guys who hunt and drag stuff out in their eighties. I am 66 and looking forward to some great hunting years, and helping fifty year olds pack out their kill.
-
I am 69 as of this month and still look forward to the fall hunts. I have to admit I do not hunt as hard as I once did. If I want to sleep in some mornings I do, but I always make it out for the evening hunt. There are times when I just set and watch the deer and other critters walk buy and enjoy their beauty. I’m not a trophy hunter so I must be getting lazy in my latter years.
-
I'm 67, older than Barry, and dragging a deer that large is not easy. I don't know if he hunts alone but a drag like that could be a recipe for a heart attack.
I go the the gym 2-3X/week, walk, and tend my 6 acres to keep in shape.
-
Thats what thirty year old sons built like a brick outhouse are for!! :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
-
I'm 58 and plan to keep hunting as long as I can afford the gas to get there.
-
I'm 72 and still hunting like I've always done. Put in a lot of days during 2010 hunting season. March 05,'10 had to have one stint put in my L.A.D. artery. After 45 days (3 days/wk,)of rehab my cadiologist said I was "Good to Go" again. I walk and shoot every day and use an exercise routine I picked up in rehab every other day. I ran every day up to 2004 until my doctor said my knees wouldn't take it so I switched to walking and mt. bikes. I also do lite wt. rep's with weights. I'm 5'11" and weigh 173#s. Most of my bows are 54# to 56# I'm thankful to the Lord I've been blessed to be able to keep doing it!
-
I'm 62 still very active . Now is the time to start living healthy because you have now realized that life has a experation date. get you a good doctor that is interested in keeping you healthy. HUNT SAFE SHOT STRAIGHT TELL THE TRUTH
-
I will be pushing 65 here in a bit. I still hunt as hard as I can. Can't do the drag thing like I once did but so what. As long as the ticker and its support hold out I am good to go..
I cant do altitude any longer so late life elk and sheep hunts are out...LOL... However I am still thinking hard about moose and a Canada bear hunt thing...
-
One of the guys I shoot with is around 80 and still hunts. He also does not use a blind or stand.
-
I can hold my own, but as bowmarks said..Thank God I was blessed with a strong son that I have not been hunting without in the last twenty years.
-
I'll be 75 on Mar 22nd (2 weeks) I look forward to deer camp in the U P every fall and also hunt the family farm a lot. Rabbit hunting in the winter, turkeys in the spring. I probably won't be hunting the western mountains any more but there's a lot to hunt right close to home. I'll probably keep hunting until they throw dirt in my face... :campfire:
-
64. I still hunt elk, but luckily (I guess), I haven't had to pack one out in a while. I hike a bunch, mountain bike a bunch, and lift weights, but packing an elk off a mountain might be a challenge nowadays.
I love hunting deer and turkeys, and I will be hunting hogs at the end of this month. As long as I can hike the mountains, I will keep at it. When I can't do that anymore, whitetails live in a lot more forgiving country.
-
Doing stress tests everyday I get to see firsthand what happens when people are inactive and don't watch what they eat. Serious hunters, especially bowhunters, tend to be some of the most amazing treadmill tests (in a good way). I am only 40, but the ability to hunt the way I want to hunt is my biggest motivator when it comes to staying in shape. Reading the previous posts, I am hopeful that it will motivate me for many years to come.
-
I see Ron mentioned rabbits and the way we do it here, i is the touhest hunting that can be done!! Hope to hunt them bunnies until I am into my 80s as well! Shawn
-
You guys are an inspiration.
I'm only 48, and due to military service my hunting opportunities have been somewhat limited. Looking forward to retirement and many years of hunting to come, out there in my 70's just like some of you.
-
I'm 57 and moderately active. I've never worried much about not being able to get around to hunt until just a couple of months ago with some knee trouble. Thanks goodness, and after getting a different orthopedic MD I'm better today than I have been in 5 months!
This past year I put in a 22-target 3-D trail in the woods my son owns next to my property. I try to leave the house and walk this trail at least every other day (90 minutes) shooting the targets out and back (44 shots). I think thi sis going to be good for me, I know it's more fun than shooting in the backyard and basement!
My best friend will be 65 this year. I've always considered Jim more able than I in the mountains, probably because he is a carpenter and I've been and administrator most of my life. However, this is the first year Jim has started to talk a bit about a less rigorous hunting future.
I'm very cautious about dragging deer and I have been for about 6-7 years. I got light-headed dragging a big buck a few years ago and it spooked me. Now I simply call my 32-year old son and the UTV.
I can't imagine a life without bowhunting. I am very hopeful after reading this thread that there's no reason to plan on giving up, ever! In fact, this is the year, as I get ready for a moose hunt with my friend Jim (the most exotic hunt of our lives--by far!) this coming September.
-
I just turned 69 in Feb. And hunt deer almost every day of the season. Got some very bad hips, so I can't walk like I used to, but go about a 100 yards at a time, and get off them for a while, then another 100 yards, ect. Still can use a climbing stand, and lock on's, and ground hunt. Still shoot bows from 55# to 65# and work out with them so I can. Will be doing it for as long as I can pull a bow, and shoot where I look.
-
I am only 58, but my rabbit hunting buddy is 76 he has slowed down a bit in the last 10 years. But we still go all day and have lunch in the woods.
He still shoots a 63# longbow and shoots it very well.
He calls me when he gets a deer if we are not hunting together and asks for help getting it of the woods if the deer is way back in.
I think the key is staying active. I like to stay active bowhunting so it should all work out.
-
I'm gonna be 55 in September. Reading about you fellas ten years older and still at it gives me much to look forward to. Stalking, still hunting, 3D and stump shooting is a great part of my life. Oh Yea! Can't forget the honey-do list.

Will be 63 this month. Look forward to deer and elk hunting every year. Last season I was lucky enough to take a nice 320 bull, my 69 year old buddy and I packed and dragged him out 3/4 of a mile. One half at a time, in 18" of snow. My buddy thinks he hates me now. Just keep in shape and keep going.
-
My buddy is 72 and is a hunting fool. GO go go all the time. He killed 4 deer with his recurve last year, and in the western states thats tough to do.
He is damn tough to beat at 3d too!
-
I'm 59 and will hunt as along as God will let me. I used to be that young strong son that drug my dad's deer out. Wish he was still around so I could try to drag them out for him.
-
Hat's off to you silver hairs that refuse to take "no" for an answer.
Luckily, lifelong sound conditioning allows me into the woods 2-4 times weekly walking up to 10+ miles a trip. Still climb trees & shoot heavier bows w/long draw. I've hauled heavy animals out w/o deer cart. God has been good. When I can't handle my performance heavy bows to my standards.., I quit. Planning another elk hunt for 2 weeks this September. If you aren't excited everytime, you;re doing something wrong. Sorry for longwinded. But, I'm no better than any hunter.., just much luckier than most that I can still hunt my way w/longbows. Maybe this stuff keeps us young? 60 in 1 week.
-
I am one of the younger ones, only 62, but will hunt as long as I can.
-
I'm 66 and diabetic. The dog and I walk about 2 miles every day on land around our 10 acres. I pull 50 and 46#, but I've never pulled more than that. Family issues have kept me from hunting too much the past two years, but now that I am retired I plan to hunt as much as possible. I may go on a first pack-in elk hunt this fall with a friend.
Stay fit and healthy, treat your body with care.
Richard

My uncle is 83 years old and refuse to hunt off the ground. He feels like he has to be up a tree to kill a deer or bear. He killed his largest bear last June with his bow. He is my inspiration.
-
I've got a few friends that are in their late 80's & still get out there to hunt & shoot.
My one friend had a auto accident before Christmas & had 9 rods put into his back, he was walking around doing supprisingly well talking about picking up the bow again in late January.
I told hime that I'm only 40 but when I grow up I want to be just like him.
-
Pushing 64 this year, don't plan on stopping anytime in the next 10 years, still hit the gym 4 days a week, and feeling good . Been blessed with some good genetics from my parents. :D
-
I'll be 68 in June . Mix weight / aerobic /anaerobic & stretching on alternating days . Shoot the bow 3-4 times a week 36#s@25"s Bamboo Viper , Morrison Dakota & Dream Catcher . Thanks be to GOD , I've never had any problems out in the field . Anyway , when you're out hunting or fishing it's a good day to die .

YOU ALL ARE AN INSPIRATION. MY GRANDFATHER PASSED AWAY A FEW YEARS BACK HE WAS 100 YEARS OLD AND IN FAIRLY GOOD SHAPE AND OF GOOD MIND, AND ONE OF THE THINGS HE USE TO TELL ME WAS LIVE YOUR LIFE DON'T WAIT, WELL I WANT TO HUNT AS LONG AS I CAN. I AM GLAD TO HEAR FROM YOU GUYS OUT THERE STILL LIVING A FULL LIFE IT GIVES ME HOPE AND THAT IS ALL WE NEED TO GET THROUGH.
KEEP IT COMMING.
THANK EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU FOR YOUR INPUT.
-
56 and still out doing my 30 year old son and son inlaw...son and i packed half an elk each last fall about half mile to get to where the horses could do the rest...7 miles to the truck on foot and then 5 mile ride back to camp...
i sure slept good!!!
-
I just turned 61 this past February. I like to bowhunt whitetail deer, small feral hogs, javelina, rabbits and my old favorite, frogs.
-
Man! I feel strangely young again :biglaugh: i'll be 50 in May and plan on doing this hunting thing that keeps me looking young as long as the Lord allows!
-
I'm 67 and had a heart attack hunting elk last year. I'll be back at it next year and be packing the meat out on my back. Stair stepper is my main exercise cause its cheap and can be done when its raining outside. Frank
-
I'm 64 had multiple open heart (2), angioplasty (4) surgeries, back and knee surgery got 6 stints in heart (suppose to have as many as 7 more as needed).
I probably hunt harder than I ever have. Probably cause I try to cram everything into each season.
Thank the God Lord I'm still able to tote climbers bout 3/4mi. back into steep terrain and climb trees.
Don't drag deer anymore, bone and pack out, but still hunt alone just like I like to and hunt just about every day from Oct.1 thru Nov. till the real cold weather shuts me down.
Don't hunt but about half a day anymore (too much to make two trips back to where I hunt in one day and don't do all day hunts}.
The hardest part is making myself slow down going in and out instead of pushing myself through breathlessness I'll stop and lean against a tree and recoup. I also try to prepair myself mentally to stay calm when a big buck walks up. I've had some very severe chest pains after going through the shot on doe and bucks. Last couple of big buck misses I have stayed calm.
I think without a doubt my hunting life syle has kept me going as much as I am now. My first open heart was in 1989 when I was 43...told myself then I probably wouldn't live to enjoy a long retirement so quit work and have hunted every since.
-
I am 73 and have hunted deer 70 times this season and turkey season does not open till 19 Mar.
-
I will be 64 this summer. You have to adapt to the pain and older age. Lighter bows, closer stands, and most important bring a young guy!
-
What RayMo said, from this 75 year old, last Oct.

No way I would drag a deer when I have a perfectly good knife in my pocket... I cut 'em up in easily carried pieces. May be illegal in other states.
I'm 57 and hunt hard. And I'm extremely fortunate that I can also hunt very often. I hope to be hunting for many years to come, God willing.
-
I think it's the lure of a tradition bow that will keep most of us hunting for a long, long time.
-
I'll turn 63 during the whitetail rut this year. My body is in pretty bad shape from having polio as a child, but I still manage. I always carry a cell phone when I hunt alone, for safety, and I don't use tree stands other than ladder types. Every year it gets harder, but I don't plan to quit any time soon. I hunt with 50-60# bows.
-
I'm 67 and my wife and I own 23 acres about a mile in from any road. We have found that canoes (when the river is high enough) and deer carts work really well.
-
I'm 67 also and getting into my program to shape up for a back pack hunt in the White River National Forest in Colorado the week after our antelope hunt in Wyoming. :D
Here is a picture that accompanied a neat story in our local paper about a guy who is 89 and still hunts every year and gets his deer every year with his recurves.

I'm 57 and God has blessed me with excellent physical condition. While I'm a small guy I still shoot 80# longbows and recurves and I still hike miles to get away from other hunters. My father-in-law was still hanging and setting his own treestands at 84. A tuff old WWII vet.
-
Dave..great picture. I hope I can still do that at 89.
I've been hunting since I was 12...When I was 7, my cousins and I had the job of jumping on brush piles to chase out the rabbits. Also accompanied my father and uncle on deer hunts where I had to "Sit still and keep quiet".
I'll be 59 this August and looking forward to another year chasing critters with my hunting buddies Bamboo and Southpawshooter.
-
Be 64 in May. Hunt mostly whitetails and hogs and plan on doing so for a while. My bud is 67. We are usually there to help each other out when necessary. Only smart way to do it. If we feel like sleeping in, or just plain going home, that is what we do. Good to see there are so many of us older fella's still enjoying the traditional way. On another note, my bud looks a lot like the fella in David Mitchell's post above. I'm beginning to worry about him, but he claims to have a "teenagers heart".
-
60 and just getting up to speed.. Hunted last week with a man that is 72.. and going at it.
-
I'm going to be 67 this June. I hunt whitetails in nw iowa. I use a climber and natural ground blinds. My hunting partner is a young fella so I have help draging. I do need to excercise more.
-
My hunting buddy is 64 and he is going strong!! Praise the Lord!!
-
I'll be 56 in June. Hard to believe this body can still put out after all it has been put through. Years of the Hard rock lifestyle, Drugging, drinking, and womanizing. Hunting hard for over 40 years, over eating, and not enough attention to exercise, have all taken their toll. Even the Doctors tell me my knees are worn out and I have arthritis in every joint. But I changed my ways at 47, stopped smoking, most of the drinking, and took up eating right and exercising regularly. feel better than ever and intend to keep going for many more years. Most all my relations and ancestors lived well in to there 90's and I intend to be hunting till then. Still hunt with an 80# bow and bought another 102# longbow which I use for exercise. Intend to use it on a Gator hunt this year. If my left arm will cooperate.
:archer:
I enjoy dragging out a kill, and am more than willing to help with the task if I run in to someone in need while hunting.
-
79 and still hunting, just don't go as fast as I used to
-
I just turned 69 and still hunting. I'm perhaps not as nimble as I used to be but I still get around pretty good. I had to drop down in draw weight somewhat, went from 61# to 55# to the 44 pounder that I shoot now. I really enjoy shooting the 44# bow and shoot almost daily. I hope that I can keep doing this for a few more years anyway.....Dave
-
I`am 70 and still gettin done, would be doing alot more hunting if I had more money, did a poor job in my younger years not putting enough money away for retirement, only thing bad about getting old is remembering when you were young,
-
Will be 65 in November. I've had an artifical leg since I was 21, so am not very fast on my feet. I hunted elk last September in Colorado and plan on going again in 2012. I hunt pigs/javvies every year in Texas. I hunt deer in NC and VA, mostly using ladder stands and blinds now. Use a climber occasionally.
