I've always just left a piece of clothing on a meat cache to deter scavenging by bears, but i wonder in higher big bear density areas if anyone has discharged bear spray around (not ON) a meat cache as a deterrent.
If so, how effective was it? Or does it just become a curiosity attractant?
With meat in a bear area, cache it well away from the gut pile until you can haul it back to camp. Then make sure you hang it high enough to be out of reach.

bear spray is an attractant once discharged.
you can get a portable bear fence that runs on "D" cells that would work better.

Up the Haul Road there is an outfitter that takes people up the Sag and Ivashak rivers. He has a meat pole surrounded by the electric fence. It keeps those aggressive half starved grizzlys out just fine. Not that much either.
homerdave is right, pepper is a very good attractant for Bears. They love the taste of it.
Again, for Homerdave!
You will just season the meat for the bear!!!!
Bear Shock, weights 9 lbs and cost $379.95. Helps ya sleep well at night.
I know its not the same as a 25 to 50 dollar can of Bear spray. Buts it worth a look.
