I shot my first deer with a MA3 broadhead some 30 years ago. The broadhead did a great job, but I quit using them because I never felt I could get them sharp enough. Well tonite I was playing with a new Jewellstik I got from 3 Rivers Archery and after flat filing an old MA3, I finished it off with the Jewellstik. It was incredable how sharp I could get it. I just might go back to them. Does any one else still use them? Thanks, Jim
I also shot alot of hogs, deer and ect. back in the day with MA3's.I love those heads.I got a doz. new one last year and they were a dark color, unlike the light green ones back in the day i used.I may have just got a bad batch but they didnt stand up as well as the older ones.
I used them 30 some years ago when the only choices in the local shops were MA3s and Bear Razorheads, The replaceable blade craze was in full swing then and nobody wanted a head you had to sharpen. They were hard to sharpen , but to be fair I didnt really know what I was doing. I eventually switched to bears and Magnus. Now that I know what I'm doing I might give them another try. They always shot well from my bows.
My first deer was shot with an M-A 3 in 1961. Fifty years ago?..

I used to shoot the MA2s back when a 6 pack of them was about $13. They flew great & I never had any complaints... especially at that price!
I shot the small MA3s (5/16 ferrule) back in the day when they were painted dull green. They were soft, so had to be resharpened regularly, but were just about the easiest head in the world to sharpen with a file. The key was to remember that each blade consisted of 2 pieces of steel welded together with a seam down the middle: you can't get the seam sharp, so have to sharpen off-center.
Shot my 1st deer with MA-3 back in 1973, shot alot of deer couple of bears and 1 elk with one great head, in 1977 Mike Monson from Clear Lake shot our state record non-typical whitetail which scored 222 3/16 with MA-3 micro-flite shaft and Wing Redwing Hunter bow, that buck was also the largest non-typical whitetail shot in USA for P&Y scoring period 1977&78 Mike received award at the P&Y banquet in Salt Lake City for that buck in 1979 all done with MA-3 broadhead,
I have used them for deer in the 70s but only use them now for smaller game and riskey(for the broadhead)shots. Usually groundhogs, coyotes, squirrels on the ground and anytime the broadhead may end up contacting rocks. After a miss I just touch up with a file and go. I have picked up many of these and the three blade "Bodkins" pretty cheap so they can be expendable, as opposed to the 160 snuffers I normally shoot.
I had a hard time sharping them at first, but once I got the hang of it, I get the best edge of any that I sharpen. I think its an awesome, under rated head.
MA-3's are one of the first heads that I prototyped with a single bevel. You can sharpen them that way really easily with a file and they do get sharp!
I've bought 2000 of them. Almost all gone.
