Title: Garmin Legend GPS
Post by: AR RidgeRunner on March 05, 2011, 01:22:00 PM
Does anyone have a Legend GPS? I'm having problems with mine losing signal in the woods. Even after all the leaves fell. I called Garmin and they told me a couple things to try but it really didn't  make any difference. Just curious if this model just has a weak receiver or if I need to send mine in for service? It's the non-color model in the blue case.

I have had one for 2 years now and no problem. I do notice when the battery gets to half strength that it does take a little while to acquire. Other then that no real problems.

Are you in WAAS mode?

Just the Legend does have a slight rep with a weak signal. On mine in the woods I may have only maybe 7 or 8 Sat. I also have the Legend Hcx, no problem whatsoever with that one even with the battery at 1/4. In fact using both side by side on the Hcx I get 12 Sats compared to only 8 on the Legend.

Garmin is great to deal with. I would call them back. I know a couple folks having issues with theirs and sent it back to Garmin and they replaced it. Depends maybe on the problem.

My legend will not acquire enough sat,to navigate when you are in the woods.

I have one.  I got a newer Etrex Summit last year and it does a lot better at keeping a signal.  Are you in hilly terrain?  Alot of times you can get in a steep draw or against a steep hill and loose a signal.  The biggest problem I had with mine was when I was moving it would loose its signal I would just have to stop every now and then and check my position.

Love my Legend Hcx and never have a problem acquiring sat signals even in my basement utility room with no windows and block walls.  Do you have the "H" model with the higher sensitivity antenna?  If so I can't imagine what the trouble might be.

Yes I have had the same problem in dense woods with no leaves but tall trees with my older legend. The receiver is not the best. My Map76 was better but my 60CSX rocks.
